My company is getting bought out in January. No decisions have been made yet but I have a feeling my whole company (or most of it) will be gone. I've gone through this before but left for another job before the very end. If you do get laid off but receive a severance does that prevent you from filing for unemployment? I guess with all of the recent news about unemployment length, I'm just curious about what I would do in the situation...
EDIT: Re-read--if you receive a severance does that prevent you from filing for the time period of your severance, even if it's a lump sum payment?
Re: Unemployment ?
at this time severance is not a bar to unemployment, whether it is lump sum or not. it is viewed as gift for years of service. salary continuation / continuation pay is viewed as wages & is a bar to unemployment.
