Is this dressy enough?

I was invited to a golf course community Christmas party by friends but it was somewhat last minute and the party is Thursday. Any of the dresses I have that would be appropriate are too big.

A friend lent me a black bodycon dress that looks very similar to this (minus the gap in the back). It's just solid black and doesn't have any shimmer. The dress fits well, it's definitely long enough and DH insists it doesn't look slutty or skimpy. I only asked him about a million times since I've never worn a dress that fitted.

I was planning to wear heels that I have very similar to these

Do you think this is dressy enough for the party?

I'm trying to avoid buying a dress since it wasn't something I was planning for (so it's a pain money-wise and time-wise with the party being Thursday) but I will if I have to.

Re: Is this dressy enough?

  • With the description & those shoes, I would say yes...but that link doesn't take you to a dress. :) Eta: now it does...the first time I swear it took me to the home page! Lol

  • I don't know if it's dressy enough or not, but I just am not a fan of the dress at all. It might be worth it to invest in a LBD in your current size for the future that you will love and can wear for stuff like this.

    Love the shoes FWIW.

  • I'd have to see it on you to know for sure but I know if I was in that dress, I would look too slutty.
  • The dress says going out to me more than it says holiday party. I don't know what the Palencia party is like, though.

And interestingly... when I googled it... this post came up third.

    Google is scary.

Yeah. I think it's a little too going out & less Christmas party. I ditto LB's suggestion of investing in a proper LBD.

Edited to take out party location Yes

  • Yeah. I was leaning toward agreeing with you ladies anyway. Plus, AF just showed up early so there is no way I'll be wearing it now. I guess I'll be heading out shopping at the last minute tomorrow.

That weirded me out so I edited my original post but it still pops up since it was mentioned in responses. There's not really any personal info so it's not that big of a deal.

For some reason, I'm reading this like it's a bad thing. Any excuse to go shopping is a good thing!

Yeah...I know it should be, but I'm pretty sure I've mentioned my weird shopping hangups to you guys. I never buy myself stuff unless I think I 100% need it. I really have to be convinced. I usually take DH with me because if not I won't buy anything. I always feel weird about spending money on myself, yet I'll buy stuff for DH no problem.

Plus, DH isn't going to be at the party. He can't go because of school. I already felt kind of bad going without him so spending money on a new dress makes me feel even worse.

  • Yeah, now that I'm not on my phone and can see the bandage detail, I agree. Enjoy shopping for an LBD. :)

  • I love you but I really don't understand this weird martyr thing you have with shopping. It's nothing to feel bad about!

I don't understand it either. I have no idea what it stems from and I know it's weird. I really am trying to get over it. I need to spend more time with my sister. She has no problem buying clothes for herself, LOL.

I'm lucky to have a DH that encourages me to buy things for myself rather than make it worse so I'm getting better about it.

ETA: Reading this back, I am really fuucking strange. Embarrassed I am going to go buy myself a dress and enjoy it. Maybe I'll even get some new accessories to go with it.

You do deserve it.  You have worked hard to get where you are and there's no reason you shouldn't have a basic black dress for occasions such as this one :)
