dentist for babies?

How old was your little one when you first took them to the dentist?

Do you have one you recommend?

Re: dentist for babies?

  • Funny you should ask today...just took my boys to the dentist this morning!  It was DS2's first visit. He is 16 months.  I forget what the official recommendation is, maybe 6 months after first teeth or 12 months?  We went to Dr. Waage at Walnut Hills Pediatric Dentistry.  We love it. Very kid friendly and inviting.  DS1 told me he likes going to the dentist just last night.   http://walnuthillsdentistry.com/
  • We have a friend who is a dentist and he said they really don't have to go until they are 2 as long as you are practicing proper hygiene (ie, not a lot of juice, lots of water to drink, not laying baby down with bottle at night, and brushing their teeth/gums).  However we went when Cole was 22 mos. to the same dentist recommended above and it was a GREAT experience!  Such an awesome dentist/office and I highly recommend it too!  Shea is the one that initially recommended them to me and I am happy we went!
  • We go to Des Moines Pediatric Dentistry in WDM at Westown and 50th.  Will went when he was 15 months.  He went again a year later, and is now going every 6 months.  He's not always a huge fan of going, but we are kinda hoping that he's getting used to it.  The staff and dentist are great, and the location is awesome for us.  DH works just a block away.

  • I thought the recommendation was when the first tooth came in or by 12 months, whichever was first for a pediatric dentist.  Sophia went at 9 months and Collin will go once his first tooth comes in.  We used to see Dr Wade and really liked him and his staff, but the convenience of Dr Waage's office right around the corner won out and now we see him.  Sophia loved her first visit with him and his hygienist actually remembered Sophia when we ran into her recently, which was nice.

  • Ours too said they don't need to come until they are 2.

  • Our girls went when they were 1.  We went to Dr. Waage too, he is awesome!

  • DS went with DH for his visit at 18 months. (I went too to watch DS). That way DS could get used to the idea of going-see Daddy's opening his mouth too-, and then all they did was count DS's teeth.

He goes back at 2 yrs. We just take DS to our family dentist.

  • We take our kids at 1 year and then again at 2 years.  The first time we just took them in during one of our appointments and the dentist just kind of poked his finger in their mouth.  That early appointment is more about education of parents as far as cleaning teeth, when to get rid of the binky, etc.

At 2 was the first time he sat in the chair had an examination and a cleaning.
