HIMYM: let's discuss (spoilers)
Re: HIMYM: let's discuss (spoilers)
This is the same gyno that Lily has, though, right? So this is the same woman that's been telling Lily that a little bit of wine/sushi is O.K. during pregnancy ... so maybe the doctor is just incompetent? (I read another discussion about that episode and some women who'd been pregnant were raking the doctor over the coals for allowing Lily to eat those things.)
I'm just surprised that the writing staff is apparently entirely made up of people who know absolutely nothing about pregnancy and conception issues. None of them are parents? None of them are women who've had regular gyno appointments or peed on a stick before announcing their pregnancy?
I mean, 3 out of 5 of the main actors have children, so it's not like NOBODY on the show knows what they're talking about ... Alyson Hannigan can't step in and say, "Um, I've been pregnant before and you can't tell the sex of a fetus at 5 weeks, so you guys should probably rewrite that episode"?
With something like The Big Bang Theory, the percentage of physicists watching is probably not all that large so they could get away with more mistakes. But don't write about something like pregnancy and fertility issues if you have no idea WTF you're talking about. A pretty decent percentage of the viewership has probably been pregnant, tried to conceive, or knows how basic human biology works.
Sadly, I know many people who TTC and are parents that are still pretty clueless. It's one of those things that unless or somebody you're close to has gone through it, you never realize all it entails.
I totally agree with you, that not everyone who deals with this (or other issues) knows everything about it. I'm just disappointed that the writers would choose to create two separate pregnancy-related storylines when they apparently don't know how pregnancy works. A pregnancy comment in a couple episodes is one thing, but they're choosing to build an entire season around it ... it just feels like they didn't do their homework. Or that they're dead-set on airing the storylines in a certain order rather than switching things around a bit so that they're in a more accurate timeline (they couldn't push back the "It's a boy!" episode a few weeks?).
I can forgive the writers any pregnancy/infertility related screw-ups because the story is being told from a man's POV. We've been struggling with infertility for a while now & if you asked DH questions about it, he'd probably give you answers that aren't completely accurate/scientific. My BIL who has children, but never had to deal with any infertility issues would really screw it up.
But this episode was entirely Robin's POV. And it would be odd if she failed to mention the part where she went in for multiple blood tests, ultrasounds, an HSG, etc. It was just simplfying things for the convenient reveal of "I can't have kids." Which is fine, but unrealistic, and I can see being peeved about it if you actually have fertility issues.
I just finished season 6, and I was flipping over the fact that Lily and Marshall saw a fertility specialist after 4 months! I think it's irresponsible to send a message that 4 mos of trying = fertility problems. Rule of thumb is to wait until 6 mos if you're over 35 (which Lily isn't) and 12 mos if you're under. Learn yourself, writers!
I actually liked the episode in general. The lights at the end with Ted were cute. I was actually really surprised when they showed Robin's "kids" because I thought "oh, well they just made the Barney wedding really easy." When they showed the kids were fake, I was like, "ok, this is more like it!" I read somewhere before this season started that we'd be tricked a few times as far as who Barney is getting married to, so I knew they wouldn't make it as easy as getting Robin pregnant.
Although, they've been on this Robin/Barney story line for at least a season or two already so I kind of wish they would finish it up somehow. Ted has become more of a sidekick instead of the main character so I wish they'd get back to him and The Mom.
Since there were so many episodes where Lily and Marshall were talking about having kids, trying to get pregnant, the false alarm pregnancy, etc... now that they're really having a baby I feel like it's been a story line forever and I wish that was over too! Though, when they have it and move to the suburbs, it'll be so different and I'll wish for the good 'ol days back! Also... who GIVES someone a house?! Geez.
Sushi is fine in pregnancy, many women and doctors will say a little wine in moderation (particularly after the first trimester) is fine too. Re- Robin's issues, maybe they did a test and found her to be in premature menopause? http://www.webmd.com/menopause/guide/premature-menopause
I thought the episode was great, didn't mind the fake kids thing, I like being surprised every now and then.
I miss you lite-brite!
