Re: SA Wednesday

  • Marie - DH and I always try to catch the dog if we see one running loose.  In fact there was one running around our street on Friday night with no collar.  We caught him and put him in the backyard.  I was going to take him to see if there was a chip on Saturday morning.  We went out for a few hours, and the dog was gone, and gate ajar when we got back.  Two things could have happened:

    1. He knows how to open the gate (it is the latch that is a lever) and busted out.
    2. We were talking with a neighbor when we caught him and she was going to send out an e-mail to the neighborhood list.  So hopefully someone got word and quickly picked him up.

Leslie - I'm SO mad, my cable box is screwed up and Fox and NBC are no longer showing up, SOOO I didn't get to record Biggest Loser.  By the time I got home, it was to late to record int he other room.  Hopefully NBC has it for viewing on their website or I am going to be MAD!

Angie - LOVE the comment to your dad! HA!

  • Does anyone understand insurance? It's making my head spin.

    I have a:

    $2000 Deductible
    70% coinsurance
    $4000 Out Of Pocket

If my hospital bill is $20k... what do I actually pay here?

They should really spell this stuff out.

  • Brianna, insurance confuses me too, and I don't even have any! lol

So recently there was a discussion about irrational thoughts. DH is going on a camping trip in the middle of nowhere the first weekend of January. Last year when he went on this trip, it started snowing when he was on his way back. I keep envisioning his group getting iced or snowed in, and then it getting all Donner party. What if they eat my husband!?

Heh, they always make this as confusing as possible. Here is what I would guess:

    20,000- 2,000 deductible = 18,000

    18,000 * 30% = 5,400 (your costs)

However, that is greater than the $4,000 out of pocket.  So as long as your insurance covers 100% after you've reached your Out Of Pocket, then you should only be responsible for the $4k. and insurance will cover the other $3,400.

ETA: But you should probably call them to verify.

Dana - That is great news about your SD.  Hopefully that will work for her.

Exactly! You would not have to pay $5,400 btw you would only only have to pay $4,000 of the $5,400.

The only reason this would be different is if your DED applies to your OOP which is normal on these high OOP plans. If it does then the most you will pay is $4,000 if it's not then you'll pay $6,000. You want to make sure you check that out as well.

A lot of companies will walk you through it all if you call them.  Sounds like that may be helpful.  Especially for those types of costs.

    Reproductive Endocrinologist.  Right???

Yes, a fertility doctor. Basically a gyn on steroids.

Brianna - I'm not 100% positive but I take that to mean you will have to pay up to  $4000 of what the insurance doesn't cover. The deductable portion means that your insurance will not kick in until you have paid $2000, but since you will already be paying $4000 it doesn't really matter.

    BUT

If this $20K event is a future event (say something in July), every bit you chip off of your deductible before then will count toward it. So let's say you have met $1500 of your deductible with various other things by then. Your insurance would kick in for covering $19,500 of the cost rather than $18,000. Depending upon whether the $4,000 OOP is a yearly deal or a per procedure deal you will then be responsible for either $4,000 or just $2,500 if it is cumulative.

ETA: Or what Deepthi said - either way, you should be prepared to pay approx. $4-$6K.

Have you read "The Road"?  I'm not positive that's what the exact title is but it has something to do with the end of the world and eating people.

I'm sure they won't end up eating each other but just in case make sure you pack a lot of snacks!

  • Brianna-  I am totally with you.  Insurance is so confusing and I don't think they do a good job explaining it at all.  Each year when our insurance election period rolls around, I just want to bury my head in the sand!  Even though I have worked here for 8 years, I always go to the insurance seminars put on by our benefits team and each year I leave just as confused.
  • They should draw out a map or something for insurance.

Good point, as long as your deductible goes towards your OOP expenses then anything you spend earlier in the year will reduce the amount you owe in July.

  • Agreed on insurance. A big eff you to paying a large monthly amount to an insurance company, never getting sick and then realizing that when we actually need it to cover something, it doesn't because it's "not a medical necessity."

  • Hey Marie-

I'm looking at the cost breakdown for your house in your bio.  Did you rent the carpet cleaner with the intent to do it yourself but then just hired someone to do it?  If so, we did something similar.  We bought one and I thought it would be no big deal, I can whip this out in a night or 2!!  3 nights later with only a very small portion of the living room done, we hired ZeroRez.  I have no carpet cleaning skills but DH does, haha.

  • Lovely news (sarcasm font)

My deductible does NOT go towards my OOP.

    This makes my stomach hurt.

  • Bri - that's a big bummer.  I'm guessing that you're out of your insurance enrollment period already?

Bri - that's a big bummer.  I'm guessing that you're out of your insurance enrollment period already?

Yeah, we don't get to chose our insurance.  It's either, enroll or don't.  You don't get options.

  • I am so excited about dinner tonight.  I am going to make grilled chicken with Stove Top, chicken gravy, peas and french bread.  Yum.

If you don't want to get addicted to something, don't ever try the Albertson's french bread.  Ever.

  • So, I love test days, usually...  This year I have a couple of kids who are just slow, and almost always take the whole passing period, sometimes into the next class to finish (although if they are repeat offenders I usually kick them out pretty quickly).  It makes bathroom breaks pretty hard to come by.  I had to grab this poor new teacher who was walking down the hall and beg her to watch my stragglers today.

Has Andrew's enrollment already passed?   I used to my on my parents insurance with them when I was a minor/student and it was pretty awesome.

..or is having a baby a qualified life change maybe where he could add you?

His passed in October, but a baby doesn't qualify.  Marriage does, but I think we may be past that.

At this point though, it's a pre-existing condition, so his insurance wouldn't cover it.

Lame! I was hoping you would get lucky.

We are in the same boat - I got official confirmation yesterday that since all treatment we pay for out of pocket is specifically excluded from/can not be filed under our insurance, $0 of it will count toward our OOP max or our deductible. I was pleased to say the least. Insurance makes me pretty angry. Super Angry

Ugh, I am so lucky my job provides insurance for all 3 of us at no cost to me.  You hardly find that at law firms anymore.

When I had Mel, I had really good insurance too.  It cost us practically nothing, and she was in the NICU for a week.  Man how times have changed.

The architecture firm I left in January paid for 90% of the employee and the first three family members. I was shocked when I saw that in the benefit package.

*cue sad music* - It makes me sick to even type this, but if I would have stayed I would have had full infertility coverage as they are based in a state that requires coverage.

Oh, gosh, that's such a weird story. I don't really know what I was thinking exactly, but something like this:

My parents flew in to help us with the renovations (they live in MI). My dad is, like, fanatical about carpet cleaning. It's a hobby of his. (He owns a professional machine for his own house and has cleaned carpets for our relatives, friends, etc for free.) He wanted me to rent a machine so he could clean the carpets in the new house.

But, I knew the carpets in the house were in BAD shape, and I didn't want him pressured to have to clean all 1500 square feet that were then carpeted. And I'd heard about ZeroRez on the radio and their 3-room special for $120. So I hired them to do 3 rooms on Friday, and I rented the cleaner and told my dad to just pick 3 rooms to do (on Thursday).

My dad did 4 rooms, and only stopped when he ran out of cleaner. The ZeroRez guy came and fast-talked me into having ALL the carpet done (even the parts he knew we'd just cleaned). And I said yes because I fail under pressure.

And then we ended up promptly ripping out the carpet in both bathrooms and the living room anyway to put in the tile/wood. (Though, to be fair, I hadn't known we'd be able to afford to do all those rooms at once).
