DH has an HSA. It's great. We originally had him on that because he hardly - if ever goes to the doctor for anything. And he's always been pretty healthy.

Since he was going to start hockey again we wanted to move him over to my plan - but we missed the window.

One thing that i will say about the HSA - that neither of us liked. Is that it takes a good chunk out of your tax returns. I originally thought maybe i was doing it wrong, but our 5 other coworkers who use it had a large chunk as well removed. In the grand scheme of things it wasn't much, and i think it was only on the amount of which DH used. but it was still almost $400. So if you're looking into an HSA - research that :)

It is great in the sense he can use it for just about anything medical - claritin, eye glasses, or a trip to the doc.

Hmm... I not a tax expert by any means, but an HSA is a tax-advantaged account.  The money contributed is tax free, it grows tax free and qualified medical expenses are tax free.  Did y'all make the contributions or did your employer?  My thinking is that if your employer made the contributions, then there may be a tax component there.  Maybe Angie will pipe in.

our employer makes a hefty contribution, and then they take a small portion out of his check. so maybe that's what it is...i dunno. All i know is that it really ticked me off this past april lol

  • I actually have zero input about the tax side of HSAs... I only did individual income taxes for a year, and I don't think any of my clients had HSAs!  Now, I'm in the corporate world so even the stuff I did learn, I've forgotten quickly Embarrassed
  • Another thing RE HSA:  When I first started working I had an account.  It wasn't much but it was something.  Then they started changing all the fees and I have not researched it in 2 years but I stopped when they started charging fees and they have just gone up.  What I saved was the fee so it didn't make much sense.  But it was just me and you have a whole family!

RE the lame-o soccer ball guy.  People like this irritate me.  I get that some people truly don't have insurance for very specific reasons; they lost their job or what have you but strictly relying on county hospitals time after time and bailing on your bill drives me bonkers.  Several years ago DH and I were talking about MIL's future in regards to her situation as she gets older and when I inquired about what her plan is for insurance DH nonchalantly said "Oh, she'll just never pay the bill and it will go to collections.  The hospital bill from 10 years ago just recently got off her credit."  It's no big deal to them!!  Crap happens as you get older and my appendix would have put me under had I not had insurance 3 years ago.
