If you could live anywhere in the DC area...

Where would you live, and why?

Let's assume price is not an issue, and you could live in a reasonably sized house, but not necessarily a mansion. This is more about location than the house itself.

Re: If you could live anywhere in the DC area...

  • If I could put a bigger house on our current lot, I think it'd be perfect.  I love our neighborhood and I like the distance (or lack there of) it is from downtown DC and other areas.

A younger, cooler, hip me would probably like to live in a swanky loft type place in Old Town Alexandria.

  • I wouldn't change where I live because I really like Prince William County, but I would extend Metro out here (may be happening!  woohoo!).

  • I really like where we live in N. Arlington. We're near bike trail (important for my husband's commute), we can walk to restaurants & a few shops, and we're about a mile away from Metro (but a bus comes every 5 minutes during rush hour). There are 3 playgrounds w/in walking distance which is really nice too.  I also like Arlington county's services (libraries, continuing education classes, every employee I've interacted with has been helpful) and how it's close to DC.  Oh, and the schools are good!

Sometimes I wish we could live in Lyon Village near Clarendon, though.

  • Cleveland Park....in one of the gorgeous old homes just slightly longer the walking distance to the metro. or on East Capitol Street.
  • At first I would have said the Woodley Park/Cleveland Park area because I love all of the trees, restaurants, and just general lay-out there. I also feel a draw to the area because my great grandmother lived near the zoo (a bit silly I suppose, since she died before I was born). However, I have really grown to love Alexandria. I love Old Town, and I just think it's really great area in general. It's nice to be in the suburbs, but not far from downtown. My goal is to stay there when we're home buying someday.
  • DH and I were just talking about how awesome it would be to live in Chevy Chase, MD. What? You said cost wasn't an issue. I think the neighborhoods are drop dead gorgeous, the houses still have reasonable yards, good schools and convenient to downtown.

There are a few other dream locations (like Middleburg and some HoCo suburbs) that are more rural and I wouldn't quite consider DC area.

  • I loved living in Falls Church City, it's such a wonderful community.  A few of my friends have moved to Lake Barcroft and I love that neighborhood as well.  The beach, parks, and community activities there are just awesome.
  • I'd like to live in Arlington or Alexandria.

  • Cost no object? Probably Chevy Chase, MD - but within reasonable walking distance to downtown Bethesda or Chevy Chase DC. Great commute to work, nice sized houses, nice yards, etc.

  • i like our current neighborhood in DC a lot and both of us being able to walk to work rocks but since cost is no object, i'll take three bedrooms (craft room for me, man cave for the hub) and a patio area for a grill and alfresco drinking.

  • I love living in Falls Church.  I love our neighborhood, our neighbors, the local shops and restaurants, that we're close to Metro, Arlington, DC, etc but that we still have a large back yard and touch of suburbia.  I would love to knock down our tiny cape cod and build a McMansion like our neighbor's.
  • I'll take a I lovely row house in Dupont Circle please!  Oh, do please make sure there are two reserved parking spaces!  I miss living there.....

This, exactly. But I would say my current neighborhood (Takoma Park) is a close second.

  • I would pick Georgetown or palisades. Also, I like the Clarendon area. I pretty much like all the neighborhoods where you can walk all sorts of places :-)

  • I'm pretty happy in Arlington for convenience to work and the things I like to do, but I would pick another neighborhood if I had an extra $500,000.  Maybe one of the houses over the GW parkway that looks out across the Potomac...or just a street that's more neighborhood-y than mine and a mile closer to the Metro.

  • If "price isn't an issue" means private school tuition isn't an issue either, then Takoma Park. Fo sho.Just a much bigger place than we have now, please. I love the bungalows, the parks and trees, the proximity to metro/SS/DC, and all the crazy hippies with their nuclear-free zone and tree protection laws and co-op and farmer's market where sometimes a guy randomly walks around with a fox pelt wrapped around his neck protesting animal cruelty. What's not to love?

  • I'm not sure what neighborhood it would be, but I choose one of those nice houses overlooking the Potomac.

  • I'd love to live in one of the big old Victorians in Old Town Kensington. It's a super charming area to walk around, and you can walk to the farmer's market, post office, grocery store, yoga place, adorable bakery, and the schools there are great. It retains more of a small town feel than other areas of MoCo, and splits the difference between my work and H's.
  • i'm in the minority hear, I dont really care if I'm close to the city or not:-) if money was no object, I would say Clifton.  doesn't even have to be one of the mcmansions, jsut a large house with a large yard with deer and such coming through:-)
  • I'd love one of the gorgeous houses with wrap around porches in Old Town Alexandria.

  • I love Arlington and we're pretty happy here, but Georgetown or Palisades would be fab. And within Arlington, I'd love to live in Lyon Village, most of the houses are beautiful and I love how close it is to so much fun stuff. However, we really love our current neighborhood and have gotten to know our neighbors so well that it would be tough to move.
  • We'd move back to Foggy Bottom in a second if money was no object and we could afford two buy one of the larger homes/condos and could afford private school tuition. It was the perfect location...lots to walk to, near Metro, near our jobs, easy to get out of the city, etc. I .love our house in Alexandria, but I miss FB everyday.

  • Probably the Palisades because I love the houses there.

  • Georgetown probably. I love the history and the beautiful streets, shops, etc.

Although after driving with Jenn and QueSerah on GW parkway on the way back from the Cookie GTG, I do love the houses overlooking the potomac as well.

  • I'd love to live in a penthouse condo by Reston Town Center

  • Without a doubt Capitol Hill. Of course I would have to ditch DH to do that since he owns a gazillion firearms, some of which are still banned by the District.

But since I like DH, I would stay in Arlington. I like our current neighborhood, but also wouldn't mind moving to somewhere a little closer in on the Orange Line like Clarendon.

  • Del Ray Alexandria, within walking distance of Old Town and the King St. Metro, please. Big porch, garage, and 3 bedrooms, as well. I love that area. Each house is unique and even though the streets are narrow and the houses are close together, I like the idea of getting to know your neighbors and it's very family-friendly with some great restaurants, coffee shops, etc. nearby.

  • I love Del Ray too. I also would love to live in the Belle View neighborhood in Alexandria. Huge homes, views of the Potomac, minutes to Old Town. Love it!

  • If I didn't have to worry about my commute, I'd love to live in Old Town Alexandria or Del Ray. I absolutely love those neighborhoods and I loved Old Town when we lived there.

But given my current job and the long commute from Alexandria, I'd probably choose a cute neighborhood in Bethesda.

  • I like where we live I just wish we had maybe a larger house.  I hate anything that feel like a suburb
