Re: New BAH rates are out
Holy crap that is awesome and perfect timing for you guys!
As long as you're already there and collecting BAH your rate won't drop. Just anyone moving to that area in the year 2012 will receive that lower rate.
No kidding. Even if he makes E-6, he won't sew on until 2013, but the difference between the 2011 E-5 pay and proposed 2012 E-5 pay, plus dependent rate E-5 BAH brings in an extra $1500. That's more than half my income, and almost exactly what I'd bring home after paying the CDC for two infants.
This creates a more tangible possibility that I can get out next year without worrying about getting another job right away.
You're really considering not re-upping? I thought you'd be a lifer for sure.
Holy crap! Hello, college funds.
Nooooo. My current enlistment doesn't end for another two years. I'm considering getting out after the babies and cutting my enlistment short because our family care plan options are lacking, and honestly, we need the stability, both as a married couple and as a family. We've had a whole year of no deployments, no TDYs, (did PCS though!) but the other three and a half years of our marriage have been non-stop military-needs-come-first.
Nah, hello SAHM.
I have my GI Bill, and since Joe does intend to go the distance (only nine more years!) he can pass his GI Bill to the kid(s). If we do contribute to college educations, I don't anticipate we'll pay the whole thing. I fully support my children working through college or enlisting to earn it.
Thankfully not taxes! That's almost a gallon of gas where I live!
No judgment here. I can completely understand that need.
Nice!
I agree with the college thing. I will encourage my kids to try for as many scholarships and grants as they can get as well as working while in school. We plan to help them out, but there is no way we will be able to fully pay for all four of them to go to school.
Thank goodness for us because ours went down $200. Sort of weird since the COL hasn't changed remotely.
Did y'all use your GI BIll already or plan on using it? We are going to use MH's to pay for E's college. The timing works out perfect and he's already completed his degree. Just an idea, if it isn't already being used elsewhere.
No flames, but I have a separate savings account set up for E's wedding or for her own use if she never marries. My folks paid for our wedding, MH's grandparents are paying for his sister's... It's the tradition where we grew up.
I just found out that our BAH is going to be $171 less than we thought. We were originally told we could collect BAH for the base closest to our house, which would be Norfolk. But since the actual base he's at is less than 50 miles away from the house we will get that base's BAH, which is $171 less a month in 2012. I'm definitely a little stressed right now.
We are supposed to close on our house on Dec. 29th, so H is going to apply for the 2011 BAH rate there as soon as we close and hope to get locked in to the 2011 BAH, since it's dropping over $100 in that area next year. A difference of $70 is a lot easier to budget than a difference of $171.
Ours went up. Not hugely, but up enough that our utilities in summer will be fully covered with the BAH rate. In the winter, well, that's another story.
We knowingly rented a place a bit where we knew we'd have to cover some of those costs, though...
I'm with you on the college thing, too. I always knew I'd have to pay for my own college education and that definitely motivated me to work harder for scholarships. My parents ended up paying for me to get my Associate's Degree while I was in high school, which won me yet another scholarship. I'll probably do something similar for my kids.
As far as BAH goes, ours dropped another $100. It dropped $150 last year, too. Good thing BAH rates get locked in.
