Ours went down $21. It is going with the bigger base next to our base. So how realistic are these figures? Since we moved here and got BAH in 2011 does that mean we are locked in on that rate? If it goes up for that base does that mean it stays the same or what? Sorry for all the question just curious

If it goes down after you're receiving the higher rate, you're locked in at the higher rate. If it goes up, you go up with it.

Oh ok. Thanks. Does BAS change?

It's supposed to. But only like 3%.

    Thanks :)

Dude, we're getting an extra $501 each.

I'm way jealous, but glad you can consider SAH now if that's what you want :)

As far as BAH goes, ours dropped another $100. It dropped $150 last year, too. Good thing BAH rates get locked in.

That's awful.  It's so sad how depressed that area is.  Stan and I watched an episode of Lockdown that featured a man who got out of prison, only to return to the cities outside south gate, where he obviously struggled to find work, which was necessary for parole.

Where are you?? I'm curious if the cost of living really increased that much over a year or if BAH was seriously underpaid previously. That's a huge jump.

Working at the newspaper really opened my eyes to just how bad it is. So sad.

  • Just to clarify, I use the zip code in which the base is located and NOT the zip code in which we live, right?

+3 whole dollars. What to spend all the extra cash on.... hmmm....

Right.  Do you get different amounts using different zip codes?  Most people only have one base near them, so for most people, the amount is the same either way, but I can see that being an issue if you're on the coasts.  Go with the zip code where you/your SO are assigned, for run of the mill accompanied rates.  The geo bachelor stuff confuses me too much to figure out what zip codes to use.

I put in the zip code of where we LIVE, and it automatically assumed the base closest to our home (which was correct) so you could probably do either/or and it'll figure it out.

Yes, we live in between San Diego and Camp Pendleton but my DH is stationed at Pendleton.. I wish we got the BAH for SD because it would be much more. I just put in the Pendleton zip code and got the correct amount.  When I put in MY zip code where we live, it was 300 bucks more!! I got so excitged then remembered that it was probably for the bases down south.. Oh well, a raise is a raise.. 63 dollars!!

There would be a difference on ours because the base DH is currently attached to is up the across state lines. The zip code where we live happens to be in a different state than base and is more effluent in general (And contains and Air Force Reserve base).

Edit: Actually, I take it back. The zip code is different, but not in the other state depending on which court ruling you believe. Frickin' sovereignty stuff.

  • Boo, it went down about 20

  • Since we first moved here in 2010 it's gone down $132. If only rent went down every year too.

H tests for staff early this coming year and yes while I know he will probably not sew on until 2013 (if he makes it) BAH from E3 (when we got here) to staff would only be an increase of $3. Crazy.

  • Ours went down $21. But we got the GI benefits letter the other day and we are locked in at the previous rate.

  • For some reason I can't get it to pull up the base H works at. They are very close only like 20 minutes apart. I put in the zip code for this base and it still pulled up the wrong one and thats not the right base. Could it be because its bigger or do they share the same rate?

If you put in the zip of the base you're at FOR SURE, and it keeps popping up the other base, it very well could be the same BAH. I wouldn't say FOR SURE, but there's a huge change, especially with them being so close to each other.

Do you want to PM me the zip codes?  I can try to figure it out if you want.

  • I am giving my GI Bill to DS (he is 16) with strict conditions.  HE will pay for the first 2 years of school at community college.  He wants to go to Michigan State and the community college works hand in hand with them for a pretty seamless transfer of most credits.

DS can live at home rent free as long as he is in school.  He can work summers to save up the tuition for Fall and continue through the holidays to pay for the Spring semester so that he paying cash with no student loans.

If he successfully does those two years my GI Bill is his.  He has Asperger's and DH and I think doing 5 years rather than 4 will be less overwhelming.  If he plays his cards right and keeps his stuff together he can walk with a Bachelor's with no student loan.  If he doesn't play his cards right Mama is going to pastry school.

Didn't even compare BAH as we are losing it in 6 months when I retire.
