My boobs are limping to the finish line...

My daughter turns one in 11 days. My goal was to nurse her until she turned one and I'm soooooooo ready to be finished.

As of Monday morning I dropped her morning session and now we only do before bedtime snack.

The funny thing is that I've officially retired my left boob, aka my milk dud. It always produced but way less then my trusty right superboob. So now I'm limping towards the finish line with my one working boob.

If this thing craps out on me now I'm gonna be piiiiissed!

  • come on superboob! random question for you- are you right handed? i am and my right b00b is the better producer as well. i read somewhere that your dominant side (ie. whatever handed you are) is typically the better producing b00b. kind of odd. good luck with the next 11 days.

That was true for me too, my left was much better.  I guess I never made the connection.

  • Am I the only one with a visual of a boob with a cape and another with crutches? lol

Seriously, well done for making it this far!

My left was the super producer but I made my right become it. Because it was easier to feed with my right at night.

  • Ha! Congratulations, that's amazing! Are you quitting 100% on her birthday as a gift to yourself?
  • Oddly enough I am left handed. I don't know why it became the boob of choice.

No, I totally envisioned it that way, too. But I was thinking of it in my head more like the "Great Snail Race" Spongebob episode.

I am forced to watch too much Spongebob.

Thanks for all the encouragement, girls! I'm really proud of making it this far and I hope to be able to do it again next time around.

Ok, I'm dying over the sponge bob. I also am picturing my boob in a cape.

Yes, I'm going to try to make it to her birthday, hopefully rightie won't peter out before then. And come 1/3 we're done. Happy birthday to her, me, and my nips!

SD, her health has been really really good. She def has had a few colds but I think that's due to day care. Knock on wood she's never been terribly sick, though she had one bout of a cough that worried me so she was on antibiotics for a few days.

She's never had an ear infection, which are so so common in young babies. BF'd babies have a much lower rate of ear infections and I def attribute her lack of them to nursing.

She also has a great appetite and is not a picky eater at.all. She'll eat anything and everything, at least so far, and I def think it's because of nursing. The only thing we ever saw her refuse was formula - eventually she took it, though. Supposedly bf babies have a wider palette b/c bm  assumes the flavor of what mom eats, so they're getting a variety of flavors throughout the day.

A lot of people say the health benefits of breastfeeding wane after 6 months, but I don't believe that at all. Babies continue to build immunity from nursing for quite a while. I never wanted to do it past a year but I can see the appeal. I'm just looking forward to having my body back. My boobs are already shrinking and I'm happy about that.

Ha, my son is the exact opposite of all of that and I BF him until just about the 11 month mark. He is an extremely picky eater to this day and got ear infections galore when he was a infant (he wasn't in daycare until 4.5 years old). He ended up getting tubes twice because of the ear infections. BF didn't seem to help him at all in those areas you mentioned.

Good job, LD. I was proud of myself for hitting the 1 month mark...a year is a long time!

Question: did you use a paci? I've heard kids who use them are more prone to ear infections. Just curious since I'm still not sure if I'm pro or con-paci yet.

Chase was a paci-addict and never had an ear infection.

Great job LD! You can totally make it through these 11 days! go boob go!

Also, My lefty is the power  boob and I am right handed.

Emma was formula fed after one month and attached to her paci and she's never had an ear infection.  She's had her share of nasty colds, but ears are good.  I've never heard of that, only people concerned with nipple confusion.  Pacis are actually recommended until one year since they seem to reduce SIDS.

  • Yay, LD!  You are super woman!

So, my breastfeeding/healthy baby anecdote.  DS has had a few slight colds, but that is all.  No ear infections.  But more telling, at least to me, is that in the past 13 months, I was been a hot pukey and other gross things mess three times, and so has DH.  DS never got those illnesses.  I totally believe breastfeeding, and getting the antibodies I was producing while I was sick, kept him from catching those illnesses.  It is the main reason I hope to keep nursing him once or twice a day through this winter.

Once I returned to work, a paci was mandatory for us.  DS liked to suck, which is fine when he nurses and can control if he is eating or sucking.  But at daycare, if he was down a bottle and still wanted to suck, it was a total nightmare.  They ended up over feeding him big time until we moved to a paci immediately after a bottle.

Babies have an instinct to suck and it can be incredibly soothing to them. There were times I just stuck a clean finger in her mouth to settle her down!

We used a paci for a short time. She was never real big on it - and while we used it to soothe her in the early months she was done with it by 4 months old. I didn't want to be dealing with a paci addiction - I didn't want to have to have 50 of them lying around or get up at night to replace it b/c it fell out. I would give her one to help her fall asleep and then when it fell out I would take it away. I also let her have in in the car.

She would rather suck her thumb, which she started doing around 4 months old. She does it when she gets tired and when she first goes to bed. I'm not worried about it though.

There was a study that came out in the Journal of Pediatrics back in 2000 that linked ear infections to paci use. It wasn't a causal link and it's not known how it works, but the study showed that babies who quit paci's at 6 months had less ear infections.

Also, I should note that my experiences are my own. Like HW said, she did the same thing and had different results with her son in terms of allergies and food preferences. Personally, I think my daughter and I both benefited greatly from nursing.

And I'm not trying to be anti-breastfeeding.  I'm just pointing out my own experience which is that I do not see any ill effects from her not being breastfed.  Eats everything, no ear infections, sleeps soundly and is generally about as easy going as a kid can be.  I attribute colds to being around what I swear are the sickest kids ever at the babysitter.  She had her first stomach bug ever last week, I have no idea where she got that from.

Any health problems she does have are more attributed to prematurity than anything.  I've asked the pediatrician and was assured her breathing issues would be the same regardless. So moral is, I do not recommend having a premature baby.  ;-)

  • Thats awesome congrats, my goal is a year too.

Also, the left is my front runner, and I'm right handed.

  • Congrats LD, you should be super proud of yourself!  I remember when we weaned Sam at a year - it was definitely bittersweet

JRM, Sam used a paci (only for overnight and naps) up until her 2nd birthday.  It was pretty easy to get her off of it.  Charlie always sucked his fingers so he wasn't into the paci at all.

Knock on wood, neither kid has ever had an ear infection or serious illness.

  • Not to hijack the post, but I have a question for the folks whose kids suck/sucked their fingers:

Max sucks his thumb/index finger/half of his hand. He's already a delicate flower when it come to his skin, and the skin that is always in his mouth is red and raw. At its worst, it starts to crack. We put aquaphor on it at night and cover it with a sock, and try to get daycare to do the same during naps. Has anyone had this happen/ did it resolve itself?

Milo has super sensitive/dry skin he isn't a thumb sucker but we use calendula for his really dry patches.
