Chit Chat Thursday

Re: Chit Chat Thursday

  • Wahoo!  Not only is today my Friday, I just got an email that I get to leave at 2.

    Merry Christmas to meeeee!!

  • I'm so jealous of you ladies who get to go home early!! We have a full patient load today and tomorrow.

We are planning a trip for DH, BIL and me as a congrats to BIL for getting a 4.0 in med school... Now where is a vacation spot that is reasonable for 3 people.

  • Thanks for all the suggestions ladies, I might do a really nice pair of PJs, still not sure.  She doesnt watch movies and doesnt go out much other than dinner, because sitting in most chairs hurt her neck and back too much.  She always wants to go to dinner, but I just think its a waste of money or dont want to waste the calories so I might do a mom and daughter dinner thing to one of her fave places that I dont really like.

What are your thoughts on this:  One of the only things she specifically asked for was peanut butter fudge.  I originally told her no because of her diabetes, do I suck it up and get her some since its a special occasion?

Leslie, I think BFF has the right to be upset for sure, and hopefully the attitude is just something caused by the stress of being in the hospital and will drop soon.

  • Awesome news Tiffany! Today is also my Friday, I am excited.

Tomorrow night we are going to the planetarium at the university near my mom's house to see the story of the Christmas Star told via the sky that night. I think it will be cool.

Julie- T&P for Sally.  Also, I saw your reponse yesterday about the Christmas card.  I am going to to back and look to see if I can find yours.

BL-  You are an amazing boss.  I have never known anyone to care about their employees as much as you do.  Congrats to your team!

We are having our house cleaned for the first time today!  I am over the moon about it and can not wait to go home to a clean house.

We liked them this year, maybe better than last year.

We get ours cleaned and every other Thursday is an amazing day to come home.  I love coming home every day, but every other Thursday is cleaning day!!!!!

Same here! I'm here til 6 today and Friday...

BL- what about her favorite perfume, in a little gift set.  My mom and I both adore getting perfume, and the little purse roller ball sticks are just so convenient.

MIL presents are hard, but we just did some new scentsy smells, a cd, and a photo book from mypublisher.

Just make sure they don't tell you it led the Wise Men to a newborn in a manger because, well... that just isn't true.

More like a toddler in a house.

I learned that this week and confirmed it through reading the story again in the bible.   My whole little Christmas world got flipped upside down.   Sad Day.

I have learned that there are a ton of things like this when it comes to Biblical stories vs. public lore but planetariums are cool, so I'm willing to suspend reality for a bit.

ETA: I am sorry that you had a sad Christmas lore rocking day though. :(

Haha, it is okay.   I was just really surprised that something so generally accepted is false.   It just proves that no one (myself included up to this point) actually reads it for themselves.  Wild.

  • Hi girls!!

Tiffany - I remember thinking it was really strange when I finally "learned" that the timing didn't work out for the wise men to be at the manger. Since then, when I'm setting up the nativities around the house, I have a little fun with it... there's a bar between the dining and living rooms, and all the wise men are set up there. They're always ALMOST to baby Jesus. I think it's hilarious, but I'm weird that way.

Leslie - BFF has a right to be mad, I agree with PP. I'd be ticked. Hopefully HP pulls the stick out and appreciates that so many people want to visit her.

BL - Every time I hear more about your company and you as a boss, it makes me happy. The world should have more people like you. I probably wouldn't get your mom ALOT of fudge if it's going to mess with her diabetes, but I think taking her out for a really nice mom/daughter dinner date and giving her a small piece of fudge for dessert would be a really special Christmas present. I'm one of those people that values experiences a lot more than things, so to me, a date would be PERFECT.

Yesterday I ended up having to field some work phone calls and emails, so I only really got a half day of vacation. But we stayed up really late last night drinking sparkling wine and watching "A Christmas Story" (well, the kids didn't drink, obviously), and this morning I stomped everyone's faces in Monopoly... so yeah, Christmas break is off to a wonderful start! :)

  • A compound bow was DH's number one most wanted Christmas gift but they are in the neighborhood of $350 on the cheap end, so it was something I couldn't do for him. Instead I told him I would just not buy him gifts and he could use the $100 I would have spent and the $100 we agreed to spend on "fun stuff" out of our bonuses toward a bow once he got GCs and Christmas money from everyone else.

He just texted me that he traded an extra rifle he had for a compound bow (he had it listed on some hunting trading sites), so now we are going on a shopping spree this afternoon to get him gifts from me. I really enjoy this so I am excited.

  • Chelsea - love your Christmas set up.  That's hilarious.  I looked at my nativity scene last night after Tiffany broke the news to me and told DH that the whole set up was a lie.  The wise men did NOT get there the night Jesus was born.  Liars.

BL - I would do a small box of fudge.  :)  Also, does she read?  You could get her a book.  I also get my grandma a really nice lotion set from B&BW that she loves.

Stephie - the whole "it's a 10" line is amazing, but it can get really expensive.  I used the shampoo for two bottles worth.  But, I have a massive amount of hair and that $20 bottle doesn't last very long.

  • Tiffany ruined Christmas.

My friend has a daughter with the most tender head in the world. She swears by the detangler from this line. It has truly saved their relationship because they would have a knock down, drag out every single morning before school before they found it.

I saw that.  I bought the tiny $18 spray to see how I like it.  I saw that mask was $30.  But I don't have much hair so I might give it a try.  I do feel like my hair is a bit heavy today and quickly realized that for me, a little will go a long way.

I think I've always known about the wise men.  I mean, how could they have gotten there in time?  But I never let details like that bother me, but instead just focus on the message.

  • Chelsea - Hahaha, that's brilliant!!

Brianna and Lacey - I didn't ruin Christmas, modern culture did!  They are the ones who wanted to make it more interesting!  Or something?

Stephie - It doesn't hurt the message of Christmas for me.  I just don't understand why we are taught all of this in art, messages, Sunday School, etc from such a young age when it isn't true.  Why not just tell the story as it is?  It's pretty darn good on its own accord.

We never learned they were there the day Jesus was born. I didn't actually realize until now the story went that they were there the day of his birth.

  • Leslie, DH was supposed to combine his birthday & Christmas money/GCs to buy new studio lighting, but I'm pretty sure he already spent his birthday money. I don't even know on what. Gas? Coffee? IHOP? *eyeroll*

Julie, I hope kitty's OK! Hopefully it was just a fluke, maybe some sinus irritation/drainage or something. Also, on the clip you posted this morning, they said they mostly need gifts for ages 9-12, so I got a couple board games for ages 8+ (Apples to Apples Junior and Clue), do you think that'll be ok? I plan on going by the Carrollton dropoff after work, it's less than two miles from my house!

Today is my Friday, too, but it's also my last day here. Which is a little strange and sad. But last time I left, when I went to Nashville, I thought I'd never be coming back. Maybe it'll happen again!

  • I don't recall ever having been taught that the Wise Men were at the birth of Jesus, certainly not past a pre-school age. But it's just kind of presented that way in song and decor and movies and art. I think it's because they're such an important part of the story... the star was signaling His birth, it just took them a long time to get there. The presents they brought were birthday presents, and they were fulfilling part of the birth prophecy. So I don't mind that they're included in the story... but I'm with you, I wish there was more clarification given to the kids so that they grow up knowing the truth of it instead of the story book version. I feel like we should be as honest as possible.

  • i'm still in a small funk today from the house situation yesterday.

We have christmas tonight with MIL, i'm hoping that'll get me out of my funk. I picked her out an awesome pandora charm from the harley store. it was mismarked and i got it for like $40 (was supposed to be $95 per the other charms in the case) can't wait to see her face. :) we normally can't afford "nice" expensive gifts for everyone during christmas. But since the house fell through and we're not looking until the new year i felt i could splurge a little more :) not to mention we got a nice $1300 christmas bonus this year! woot!

I totally agree with you. I feel like if the stories from the Bible were presented in a more forthright it would really be a benefit. Many teens and young adults reflect on their religion when trying to figure out if it is right for them and when they discover misrepresentaions like these, no matter how minor, I think it builds distrust and hastens their exit from the church.

I would think that games would be great.

  • I am really not looking forward to church on Christmas day with Matts fam.  Church is something I already dont have the easiest time with and I just dont see this being a fun experience but and it will likely be crowded and just not my style.

i'm kind of the same way. But you can smile knowing that you're being there for Matt :)

  • Does anyone else think it's weird that Stephie's post from yesterday has nearly 100 views? I think we have more lurkers on this board than we could imagine.

I forgot to say this morning that I appeciate all of the kind words yesterday. I spoke with my aunt just a bit ago and today is a better day for them. My grandmother was making everyone a lasagna and they seemed to be in better spirits.

I'm glad to hear they are in better spirits. I cannot even imagine the whirlwind of emotions that they must be going through. :( Do they have any answers or closure at all as to what really happened and/or why?
  • BL - I've never tried it, but they make sugar free fudge.  If you can find a bakery with lots of selection, they'll have sugar free fudge also.  I can't think of a single place in Dallas (the last place I saw it was in Madisonville, 3 hours from you), but I know it's out there!

    T&Ps for Sally, Julie!

Leslie - Ditto PPs, how does a hospitalized person have too full of a schedule?  It's not like visitors stay for very long anyway.  Ridic.

As far as the Christmas story goes... I kind of think of it this way.  Let's say my birthday is during the week.  That day, I'll probably go to lunch with coworkers, and then possibly to dinner with J.  The weekend before, I might have gone to dinner with friends, and the weekend after, I may have a birthday dinner with my parents.  Sure, my parents and friends weren't there for my actual birthday, but we still celebrated just the same... and if I do a photo album, like on FB or something, I'll include all of those pictures in one album titled My Birthday.  I like to think of it as extending the celebration as long as possible, and that's what the wise men did too!

I went and looked when I first read the other thread, because I thought that Stephie's dream was there, but then when I scrolled down more I realized she'd moved it into the main thread.  Then later, I forgot I'd looked, and there were a lot of views, so I looked again. (I look at things with lots of views, even if it doesn't look interesting.)

  • BL- I forgot to say that Cabela's has sugar free fudge and if I remember correctly they make a sugar free peanut butter and chocolate.  It's been a while since I worked there but I know they do make sugar free fudge.  It's up in the "country store" at the top of the right side stairs.

  • We always get the most random gifts from one of the groups here at work and this year I got an angry birds eraser, gigantic chocolate bar and a poker card set.  Now I'm covered in green glitter from head to toe.
