Do you own, rent, or live on base?

Re: Do you own, rent, or live on base?

  • Currently base housing, but at our next duty station we plan to buy.  We're wishing, hoping and praying to be able to stay there permanently.

  • We rent. We are in dwelling number six in less than six years--and we are moving in March. When we move, I hope and pray we get to live out in town. From what I've read and understand, if there is room for a family on post, they require you to live on post (though, supposedly there is space for only 10% of E6 and above and all O).

  • I'm late to this thread, but we rent off base. The housing we'd get on base just isn't worth the money we save while renting.

  • We currently live off post but will be moving on post in a few months. BAH is low and rent is high(for good areas) where we're at now and since we'll get a larger house on post it's worth it. We don't plan to buy until we get to certain post.

  • We own.  We love where we are and hope to retire to this general area.  If he stays in we will rent it out with a property manager the rental market is strong here.  We actually saved money buying because what we would get for money we have to spend to rent would be sucky, by buying we got a lot more for our money.
  • We rent, off base.

We have lived on base before, and enjoyed the convenience of it, but it was just way too much a pain in the ass when my family was in town to visit.  (I'm a foreign national, so my family members are foreign nationals, which makes life difficult if we want to, say, have them over for supper when they are in town visiting.)  Now that my parents are retired, I'd rather not have restrictions like that on having them visit.
