nursing cover question

I am making myself a nursing cover and debating on whether to put in the boning.  Anyone have one without it and wish it was different?  I figure I can use it as a blanket if it lays flat, but I'm not sure if it will be less effective as a nursing cover that way.

Re: nursing cover question

  • I'm guessing the boning gives the cover some space from the baby instead of laying right on the baby. my cover has always been hated by my daughter. She has repeatedly tried to flash the world for me  it lays right on her and she is not a fan  Had i known they made them with some structure I would have def tried that!! Not a sewing pro but how im picturing it, could you make the little "sleeves" for the wires or plastic so that you could use it with and without? i have no idea if thats even possible since ive never seen this style but in my mind thats my solution! Gosh i probably did NOT help!

  • I have one from uddercovers and it has a little boning or something at the very top, and I wish it actually had more.  I didn't use it much, but whenever I did it wasnt "sturdy" enough to see things/ get things situated under there.  So I'd totally vote to put some in.
  • I would say boning would help.  I just made a ribbon with two alligator clips on the end and attached that to whatever blanket I had along.  That way I didn't need a cover and a blanket.  Just a thought for ya.
  • I have one that my friend made me without boning.  I think it worked just as well as my hooter hider or udder cover.  (I apparently have a nursing cover obsession).  I like that I could shove it in my diaper bag without worrying about messing up the boning.  :-)

This was my thought.  I planned on using the alligator clips, then figured the cover could be used as a blanket too.

  • I like the boning and I have used mine for a burp cloth, blanket, etc. since only a little section curves up and depending on how you lay it on the ground the boning will lay flat.
  • I would definitely make the "nursing clip". It has multiple uses and easier/takes up less storage in  your diaper bag. Plus, you'll always have a blanket handy, right?
