QOTD: Friday

What is your idea of your dream job?  Let's not look at how much money you would make or hours fitting into your lifestyle etc.  What would you like to do every day for the rest of your life?

Re: QOTD: Friday

  • DH and I talk about this all the time.... when (not if) we win the lottery, we want to buy a HUGE farm and run a rescue for unwanted/disabled dogs.  I would love nothing more than to wake up and play with pups all day.

If I had to choose something a little more realistic, I'd say that I'd love to be a travel photographer (not that I have the talent for it, but we're dreaming, right?)  I think it would be amazing to visit new places all of the time and share unique destinations with others.

  • Honestly.  I hate working.  What I would love to do is SAH and craft, volunteer, cook, work on our blog, get serious about photography, etc.

But, since I need to pay bills right now, I would love to teach history, or be a researcher/researches assistant for a museum.

  • Since I was a kid, I've dreamed of owning a hotel or bed and breakfast (with enough staff so I could just do the management and not the cooking, bed changes, etc.). DH dreams of being a professional scuba diver again (he was for a few years in his 20s). We dream of someday settling on an island and running some type of resort with a dive shop/school.
  • Like SSW, I really want to SAH.  There's so much stuff to do at home, and I wish I had more time to devote to cooking/baking/crafting.  I honestly don't think I'd get bored.

  • Something artsy and creative.  I think it would be really fun to own a boutiquey store or cafe that displays and sells art - along with other stuff.

I'd also like to start businesses, then sell them or franchise them when I get bored.  LOL.  I love the stuff that goes into creating a concept... I'm not so good at the mundane stuff.

My "way out" there idea would be to start a farm in a 3rd world country - importing exotic stuff to the U.S.

  • Realistic: I guess I already have it, but it wouldn't be with this company. Someplace less stodgy and more artsy?but doing essentially the same thing (copyediting... just not for accountants). Of course, I just hit my 7th anniversary here and am worried I'll be a "lifer." Don't get me wrong... once my horrible boss left, this place has been relatively good to me, it's what I always pictured, but...

Fantasy: Ice cream flavor developer? I'm sort of serious. ;) Surely someone does this!

  • Is Lady of Leisure an option? I have a lot of hobbies I would like to pursue, but really no desire to make money or run a business. I just want to putter around with my camera and my kitchen and a pottery wheel or something.

The thought of doing fancy equine portraiture (taking pictures of rich people's horses) has crossed my mind. I'm infatuated with the work of Shelley Paulson and would love to be like her when I grow up. Plus, I think there may be a market in the DMV.

  • My dream job would involve sports, whether that would be as an ESPN Reporter, working in the front office of a team, or back at my alma mater in their athletic department (one of the largest in the country).
  • I would love to own a bakery.  It would display local art as well (provided by SStrug and chchch and beyond).  Travel photograpy on the side.

I have a friend who has a hunt horse in VA -- srsly, if you want to practice on her, I can put you in touch. and then you can upsell all of her richyrich friends.

  • also, my own answer -- professional organizer, of course. Different house every week - I zoom in and fix it up. What a wonderful sense of accomplishment I'd get!

I also love KtotheJ's (I already forgot the new name, sorry!) idea of running a farm for dogs. John and I have, in fact, talked about that if we ever buy his dad's house in McLean (5+ acres, just needs a fence!).

  • I would love to do something like Rick Steves or Samantha Brown. Traveling all over the world, eating great food and seeing wonderful sites! I can't think of anything better.

  • I change my mind on this all the time.  But I think my dream job would be being a Professor at a university for Materials Science Engineering.  However, I would be a primarily a teacher and perhaps a researcher secondary.  My passion is teaching people about science and not writing hundreds of proposals.  At least right now I get to teach my coworkers every once in a while!

The only reason I think this is some-what realistic is because I actually know quite a few folks with ponies that I can practice on (I rode for decades and both my parents still have horses). I just have to, you know, practice. And get good, really good. And figure out how to run a business, which is where the whole thing falls apart . . .

  • Professional tourist!!

I want to stay at 5 star hotels all over the world and review the hotels, restaurants and nearby sites! I'll also take photos to accompany my reviews.  I will travel to all these fabulous locations in business or 1st class, only. Thank you!

  • I would like to write novels that you would pick up in the airport - you know, the kind of pure entertainment value only. If that's not available, I'd like to work at OPI naming nail polish colors.

You can also buy my fancy third world cocoa for your chocolate ganaches.  LOL.  :)

Ditto - although I think I'd prefer doing it Anthony Bourdain style. :)

  • I pretty much have my dream job. There is nothing other than graphic design that I would want to be doing. I love being able to be creative every day. I wish I had a little more business, but since I've been pretty busy lately, I can't really complain :-)
  • 1: Work at a non-profit to help at risk young women find ways to be successful and live great lives (somewhat realistic)

2: Be a best selling novelist (Less plausible)

3: Design dresses (Never gonna happen..)

  • I have 3, all totally different, but all satisfy different interests of mine:

    A genealogist.

    A professional latin ballroom dancer.

A professional tourist (as pps have mentioned).

All of them sound like so much fun to me.  They all hit at things I love, but don't get to do or enjoy often.

  • If I can't be a lady of leisure (because, seriously,  I have no ambition when it comes to actually working), I'd either want to have a little bakery cafe in Napa, or be a lactation consultant. I know mssaint already has dibs on this one, but I looked into it recently and if I could quit my job and go back to school, this is what I'd go back for.

    Um, yeah!  Of course!

  • ideally, i'd like to be a lady of leisure.

but if i had to be employed, i'd want to be a garden designer.  specifically, high-end kitchen gardens or some such. or, perhaps i'd be a jam maker with a little shop that i sold my jam along with imported english teas. but in both these schemes i'd just want to be the doer & not the manager or the person that deals with accounting & pay roll or whatever.  that stuff sound like zero fun.

My sentiments exactly, except with coaching! I love talking to the people I work with and seeing their progress and success ... even if that success doesn't look exactly like what they planned. I love that I would read the books, take the classes, and do the professional development I'm studying for fun because I find it fascinating. I get a high when I have deep meaningful conversations with people, and when I attend events or trainings with other coaches who are doing amazing things. I am surrounded by inspiration.

  • i'd love to have a travel photographer and have a show ala zane lamprey's three sheets or anthony bourdain's no reservations. samantha brown annoys the hell out of me but i wouldn't mind her job either ;)

  • I'm still trying to figure this one out- it's definitely changed over the years.

    - work at the UN as an interpreter (most likely not going to happen because 1. I'm not that good, and 2. I don't want to move to NY)

    - have my own greeting card company (have thought of this a little more)

    - become a geneologist (have thought of this more too lately)

  • I have a few.

     1) I like what I do now, but I'd like to have some of the pressure taken off. So I'd like to do what I do now with way more staff to implement the ideas.

    2) lactation consultant

    3) lady of leisure who quilts and sews and blogs about it

    4) I would love to open a used bookstore/cafe/brewpub with a small performance space and room to hang art by local artists.  DH really wants to open a coffee roastery, so maybe we'd do that, too.

  • I love parts of my job -- if I could be a teacher and just teach kids all day and not deal with the politics/adult interactions, I'd be happy.

I'd really love to do something in the culinary area though, cooking, baking, etc.  I'd also be open to staying home all day and being SAHW/M whatever.

DH say if we win the lottery we're going to go through Le Cordon Bleu or Culinary Institute of America together.

DH's dream job is easy -- Ghostbuster.
