Re: I love this idea!
That's how I feel. I was cleaning out my spices last week and discovering things I cannot remember using. I know I've used them all because I've never bought a spice without a corresponding recipe... but some of it has to haev been 4 years ago when we first moved in.
I do the smell test. If it's not fragrant, it gets tossed.
Sadly, I do this probably about as often as you do.
It's a neat idea...but I have WAY too much make-up and WAY too many spices for this! Plus, I'm not sure I want all of my make-up displayed in a frame. Some of it doesn't look pretty enough to be displayed.
I've seen little containers with magnets displayed with spices in them on a metal strip behind the range or counter by the sink (wherever you do most of the cooking/prep). Kind of like you would a tile backsplash, but metal. I always thought that was a cool idea.
I do have them! Just twelve that I use regularly. The rest are organized in my cabinet (I have baking spices in one place, various types of pepper in another, then the herbs in another spot, with miscellaneous in between).
I was thinking, when I have a house again, I'd love to do magnetic paint on a backsplash and put all my spices in magnetized jars...it would be like art!
Ohhhh...I love this idea better than the metal strip I was talking about. My spices are everywhere and fall over and out of the cabinet. It drives me nuts and I end up buying duplicates of stuff I don't use that often because I don't realize that I already have it in my cabinet! I like keeping my spices in my Penzy jars though and I'm not sure it would work with those.
I'm totally stealing this idea.
I have a dump truck load of spices and just to make things annoying, I have no cabinet space. So they stored in a box in my pantry. I have to dig through the box every time I cook to find the one I want. I hate my kitchen.
