  • I'm having a really hard time getting back into exercise here without Ting.  He really made it fun.  I haven't been impressed with any gyms that I've toured here yet.  Woah is me.

Speaking of youtube, when all of my brother's 20 something year old friends come over, they end up watching youtube videos of cars racing.  I need to come up with an arsenal of funny youtube videos to make them watch instead.  Please help.

  • Once upon a time, I was a pretty decent athlete. The years took their toll, two babies, 184 burritos, a wine barrel or 9 later and I realize something has to change. I have been unable to motivate myself for 15 years, but looking at pictures of myself after Lo's party woke me the eff up.

I never really liked running on the treadmill or elliptical because of the constant digital reminder of just how much longer I had to go, but I've been reading while running for the last month and it really is working for me. It took me a little bit to get used to being able to keep my place while bouncing all around and seeing stars from nearly passing out, but it's gotten way easier as I've acclimated to the workout and have gotten more in shape. Hating those 40 minutes has been replaced pretty quickly with wanting to get down there and find out what happens next in the story. And bonus, the scale readouts are going in the direction I want them to.

And dude, after it's all done, I feel like a warrior.

Christin, I still can't get over your 5 the other day...  The most I've been able to hit so far is 4 miles.

Yeah, I really pulled back from talking politics here because I got tired of arguing my viewpoints.

I also HATE working out - at the gym anyway. Which is really you're only option when you live in a climate that only facilitates outdoor exercise a couple months of the year. That's why  I try to play so many sports - I love sports, the time flies, and I totally get that endorphin release feeling. It's not always a hardcore workout - my winter rec volleyball involves a lot of standing around and goofing off, and a tiny bit of sweating. If you can find something you like doing that involves moving your body, that's better than nothing.

This. Totally this. I have never been a big fan of gyms. I'd rather work out in my living room... which is easy to get distracted from and eat.

You both make me sad. I like arguing.

  • I used to like it, too.  Then it got tiring. :-(
  • You know, I think I would feel overwhelmed if I stepped on a machine thinking I was going to go for 60 minutes.  I have a lot better success focusing on small goals.  So I start thinking, okay, 15 or 20 minutes.  If you're not feeling it, you can switch machines then.  And if I'm in a groove so to speak, I keep pushing myself.  Another 5, maybe 10.  The other day, I just kept saying, another 5, until I was so close to 60 minutes that I just decided to do it.  Certainly not an everyday event for me.  But, now that I know I am capable of that, it's a good motivator when I'm thinking of quitting at 20 or 25 minutes.  And sometimes I just don't have the drive or stamina and I end up doing about 15 minutes each on 4 different machines.  Honestly, the variety is probably good for me, and it feels so manageable when you're just focused on what you need to do for the next 15 minutes.  Working out with D has been a great source of motivation.  He's the one that pushed me to work on my running so we could do a race together.  6 months ago I never would have believed he'd have even stepped foot in a gym.

I'm actually not into arguing, which is odd for a lawyer. It could be living in DC - you hear about it so much that it is just the same old, same old.

    Super random.

I was just walking out of the bathroom.  I put my paper towels into the trash can (one of those public restroom type trash cans - small capacity, on the wall).  I saw a top to a yogurt container in there.  I can't stop wondering WhyTF somebody would need to throw that away in a bathroom.  Every option I come up with is gross.

We are not allowed to eat in our offices but I do eat my yogurt in there sometimes in the morning. I don't throw it in my office trash so I put it in the bathroom trash.

And then there's that.  I work for the state legislature, although in a non-partisan capacity.  It's often just too much.

Re: food in bathroom trashes. We have to take out our own trash here and there is a bit of an insect problem so there are a few consolidated trash spots. One of those, and the only one on the way out the door, is in the ladies room, so that's exactly where I would take a yogurt container.

  • I'm trying to make a go of working out 3x per week at lunch or before I head home.  Once I get home it's all over.  I went to spin class at 12:15.  I think I just now stopped sweating/being flushed.

The key to me losing weight is to get on an exercise regimen first.  Once I start doing that, I start feeling better about everything, and then I have a vested interest in eating better to enhance the results from working out.  Diet first or diet alone will work if I stick to it, but I never do, so it just doesn't work for me.  I'm totally an emotional eater / perfectionist, as described in this article:

  • Wow Lindsay, thanks for that article and the insight! I've never tried the exercise first, then eat better approach so I may give that a go. I'm definitely a perfectionist and I need to break out of that so I'll do anything to shake that up.

The bathroom in question is in this little interior hallway that only leads to the freight elevator.  There is a huge trash can right outside of the bathroom.  In this case, it really makes no good sense.

And regarding talking politics, I don't do it.  I have never liked it as I just don't feel most conversations are productive.  I hated living in DC where you would go to parties and would only talk about politics and/or your job (where most people worked in government/law).  But, I guess it all just relates back to how I hate to argue.  I go in with a very clear point in my head, get all frustrated in the conversation, and then totally forget my point and end up feeling like I was wrong all along.  I like thinking I am right.  :)

  • It literally just hit me today, that revelation is hot off the press.  I was reading that article while nomming on a bagel that is eleventy million WeWa points because I said "eff it, I already screwed up this week, might as well go whole hog off the wagon, as long as I promise to start fresh and be perfect next Monday" (yeah right).  Then during spin class, I remember that I got a personal trainer when I was in Chicago, started to get muscles, and that was what motivated me to eat better. Now I'm looking at a picture of A and me from "MBA Prom" and I'm thinking, damn I want those shoulders back.

  • I'm trying tiny changes, but I worry about when it comes time to transition from tiny starter changes to real ones. Like, I used be really good about getting a veggie egg white flatbread for breakfast every day (I know, I know, better to bring your own breakfast, blah blah blah, but this is convenient and reasonably healthy and the egg keeps me full like nothing else has). Then one day in, like, October, they mixed up my order and I wound up with an egg and cheese croissant. And that was it. It was like giving smack to a drug addict. I couldn't stop. Every day, I got that, even though I'd been enjoying my flatbreads. So this week I've made myself go back to the flatbreads. Things like that feel manageable. But I know I need to do more, so I'm definitely going to try the exercise first, then do the rest thing.

Plus going to the gym means less time to snack, right?

Christin and others, have you ever tried interval training on cardio equipment? I hate doing cardio on machines, but doing intervals has made all the difference - I started dropping pounds. Essentially, you do a shorter workout and just alternate between periods of working at maximum intensity and a restful state to get your heart rate back down. So, I do 1 minute as hard as I can go, then rest by going slower for two. Even 30 second intervals will get it done (with 1 minute of rest). I can do my cardio in 20 minutes, 25 if I am feeling like a champion. Even 15 minutes would burn more calories than 30 minutes at a steady state. I often see them doing treadmill intervals on Biggest Loser.

Doing intervals or pace targets for small chunks of time/distance really helps me work through the mental part of a treadmill workout. It's less about having 3 miles left and more about doing this pace until the next quarter mile. I usually do a progressive pace and get faster throughout the run at set distances.

  • I often do intervals to mix it up too.  Typically when I'm on an elliptical or arc trainer, but I've recently started doing so when running as well.  It does sort of keep me focused on getting through that 2 minutes or so of more intense running.  I like to keep changing things up and trying to push myself in some new way.

  • I'm doing interval work today. I close all frivolous tabs, do one minute of work, check the boards/facebook, then close the tabs, do one minute of work, etc. I'm already burned out on this week.
