Re: carseat inspections?

  • Can't you just go to your local police station? That's what I've always done and it's not a big deal at all.

  • Abington Hospital has one the third Saturday of every month and it's free.  If that doesn't work for you, I believe they have a list of other inspections in the area.

Jen did you go to this?  I remember back in September I called and they acted like I was crazy and had no idea what I was talking about.

In philly you have to make appointments and these things fill up quickly!

I will try this if i can't get an appointment for monday. I am trying to get this done ASAP since milo can't wear a jacket in his infant seat anymore.

  • I know the local fire stations do them.  I'm assuming you have the lik to the list already though.

Have you tried wedging a pool noodle under the chair?  I have heard of people cutting one to fit to get the seat level.

I had ours checked by a team that is funded by our county. They completely undid my installation and redid it.

It took 5 people, 45 minutes, and two cut up pool noodles to get that sucker in.

ETA check the height requirement of your infant seat to make sure he already hasn't outgrown it. Often kids outgrow it by height before they do by weight. For instance a  Graco Snugride 35 goes up to 35 lbs but only 32 inches.

Yeah my other suggestion was the fire station.

For some cars, you may have to do what Shannon said or put a rolled up towel under the seat. My car has bucket seats with a pretty big/deep incline on the actual seat itself and so we have to put a rolled up towel under the one side of the seat to bring it to level (even after adjusting the seat itself with the level adjustment). Without the towel, the car seat would never be level.

  • guys who the hell has foam noddle just lying around in the middle of winter.

but yes i know the trick we tried regular non compression foam but we have bucket seats so it is slopping still.

height is still okay he has about an inch and a half to the top. but we do want to safely change it asap.

  • 5 below probably has pool noodles.  I think the inspection places often already have them.

  • Did you try calling the Belmont Barracks?  I remember someone saying they went there before, but I'm not sure how any of this works!

they can't see me until feb 1st!

  • I know it would be a total pain but you could put him in without a coat and cover him with a blanket and then bring his coat to put on him when he gets outed the car until you can get in with a site for inspection.  I would call your local fire station though and ask them if you an drop by.  They probably get calls all the time.

We are doing this already. But it is getting colder our car is not always out front of our home etc.

I called was told no one is certified and to call state police.

Again we are handy people but when we couldn't get it right we want a professional. I have calls in at all the places on the online websites. So hopefully we will get in.

  • CHOP's trauma prevention program runs carseat inspections throughout the area.  Don't know if you've contacted any of them yet, but here's a link....

  • Could you take it to your nearest 'burb this weekend? Someplace recommended here that does them without appointment and is accommodating?
  • I'm with lachute on this one -- getting this done in the city is a gigantic PITA.  With the infant seat, I called our local police and fire and they both acted like I was completely nuts.  This was after multiple unreturned phone calls to the local state police barracks.

We have called twice so far to schedule a time for the convertible, and nothing in return.

Also, I remember calling one of the burbs places when we were dealing with the infant seat -- a fire station in I want to say Norristown/Conshohocken -- and being told I was SOL because they only did it for residents.  I am sure that is not everywhere, but really not being able to get it done by your house OR in the closest suburbs is a huge, gigantic, time consuming pain.

If someone actually has real life experience with a place on any of those lists that will take someone with a one month wait for an appointment, please share! Because in my experience, they sort of suck.

  • if you check the safekids.org site for events, there is an event in Exton on 1/24. I realize that's far as all get out for you, lachute, but it's the closest (by date) event.

I also had a month's wait when I scheduled an appointment with the local branch of state police. I ended up finding an event that was the following Monday and went that way.

  • I'm not sure this will work but I'm posting a scanned image of care seat inspection places in Bucks County.  I'm not sure if that's too far for you to go and if you can't read it I can always email it to you.  I have it saved on my computer.
