Atlanta -- Several layovers, but never visited the city
Boston -- Never
Chicago -- One layover, lol
Houston -- Once or twice (used to live in Texas)
Los Angeles -- Never
New York -- Never
Philadelphia -- Used to live there
San Francisco -- Once for real, and several layovers
Seattle -- Really.
Washington, D.C. -- Used to live thereI'm guessing the OP on the MM board just listed off major U.S. cities. Obviously you could include other ones - I'd likely add Miami and Phoenix to the list as Miami is an obvious vacation destination and Phoenix is something like the 5th or 6th largest city in the U.S.
Atlanta I grew up there
Boston I went to college in Providence, so I've lost count
Chicago 2
Houston 3
Los Angeles 5
New York 4
Philadelphia 2
San Francisco Have to travel there for work, so over 10 at this point
Seattle Live here now

Washington, D.C. A few times, I want to say 5-6?
If you go, you have to check out Girl and the Goat. I had to make reservations 2 months in advance and we still had to eat at 4:30pm.
It's life changing.
Also, try to get in to Alinea. I haven't been yet but friends say it is incredible. I would plan a trip to Chicago just to check it out (though it's molecular gastronomy so if that's not your type of thing, maybe don't go since it isn't cheap).
How soon is soon? If you've got time while you're here, here's a list of restaurants that are totally worth going to but require reservations in advance:
Normal prices:
-Frances, on the Noe / Castro border
-Flour+Water, in the Mission (just ate their Sunday - delish!)
More expensive:
-Gary Danko, in Ghiradelli Square (5 course tasting menu is $100/pp)
-French Laundry, in Napa / Yountville (super pricey, totally difficult to get reservations to, but if you're a foodie this is a must-do - it's tied for the best meal of my life)
And if you're into Mexican food at all, stop into Papalote (one in the Mission; the other is in... the Haight, maybe?) and try their roasted tomato salsa. Amazing.
I'm sure I recommended some of those places last time you were down here, but if you've got a few weeks before your trip, you could probably still get a table at Frances or Flour+Water. Both also take walk-ins; you'd just want to go right when they open because the wait will get really long, really quickly.

So where did this list come from?

I have no clue. It seems so arbitrary. In my mind Dallas is bigger than Houston. Who knows if that's true, but it seems like they should have asked about Dallas before Houston.
i stole it from mm.. lol.
But where did MM get it from?

Honestly, my guess is someone just made up a list of what they would consider "major" US cities. As I mentioned previously, there are certainly more you could include:
-San Diego
-Phoenix
-Miami (how this one isn't listed is beyond me?)
Houston is actually about double the size of Dallas in population, so my first thought was maybe they just did the most populous major cities in the US, but Phoenix is almost always in the Top 5 and it's not listed, and Seattle doesn't crack the Top 20. So - I'm guessing this was just some random list. It would be like if I tried to make a random list of large international cities... some would obviously not be there.
Atlanta - I think I've been through that airport, but don't know for sure

Chicago - maybe through the airport?
