Have you guys been following the story of the cruise ship that crashed in Italy?  Crazy!  The photos and stories coming out of their are surreal.

YES! How crazy! And that captain? Really?!

I know!  I just read an article about how the Italian Coast Guard was apparently screaming at him and threatening him when they heard he was leaving the ship.  They ordered him to stay on the ship, but he didn't.

I've been following this story. How in the world do you get 4 miles of course. Did you see the big piece of rock stuck in the hull of the ship!

I guess he purposely went off course to "salute the islanders" by running close the the island.  So totally just pure negligence, not an accident or anything.

Yeah, I saw the rock stuck in the hull.  So weird.

I also found it interesting that they hadn't done any safety training with the passengers yet.  Apparently, US law is that you need to go through training before leaving port.  But international law is that it needs to be done anytime within 24 hours of leaving.  So, they hadn't done the training yet, which added to the chaos on the ship (you know, along with the captain and other necesary crewman fleeing!).

Needless to say, this is not helping my efforts of trying to convince DH to take a cruise.

I also saw a video where this same exact ship (so maybe the same captain, I'm not sure) did the "drive by" of that island a few weeks ago. Someone sent in a cell phone video of the ship showing off by getting close to the island and honking their horn (is that what it's called???) the entire time by the island.

  • I think I'm about done with this house and will be glad to leave. I had the city of GR come out this AM and check the main water/sewer line because we are still having problems with the line backing up into the basement. They check and said that there line was clear. Well I just had our line cleaned out last week. Now I have to have our guy come back out and in the mean time laundry and dish and showers can't really get done.

Cruises are boring.  It's much more fun to stay on an island or in a city.  :)

H and I watched some disaster show once, there were a couple cruise ship wrecks caught on tape - pretty intense!

  • I heard about the ship when it happened, but haven't been following the story.  Despite Jim's suggestions, I've been very reluctant to go on a cruise.  I kind of freak out every time we are on the Mackinac ferry (like, seek out lifejackets for myself and the kids, sit by an escape window, know how that window works, drivers license in my pocket, and a plan of which kid goes in which arm -freaked out).  I know it's not rational, and this is completely different, but this terrible tragedy will not help my fear.

  • I had no desire to go on a cruise, I have even less of one now.

I am realizing how much I need my down time. This is the second weekend in a row where I didn't really get to relax much, and my stress level is feeling it. I don't know how people with kids do it! I need a good four hours to myself to read or watch TV or surf or blog and plan or I get all discombobulated.

I know what you mean.  Thank goodness my kid goes to bed at 8.  :)

  • Now I know how people must feel when they say they dont wanna fly. I love to fly but you wont catch me on a cruise ship - too many horror stories and I am motion sickess. So my feet will be in the air or planted on the ground.

  • This week we started getting more information about job searching, interview prep, etc.  It's like another 3 credit class just got added to my schedule.  And I'm under serious pressure to improve my GPA this semester (just by a little bit) to keep my scholarship.  Still waiting on one last grade.  So not only did I not work hard (or smart) enough last semester, all of this is added.  Plus there will be moot court and law review competitions soon.

Feeling overwhelmed and depressed.  I'm working on creating detailed to do lists to work myself out of this funk.

  • I have mixed feelings on cruises.  We went on one with friends, a second as part of our honeymoon and one with a big group of family in August 2010.

I had an amazing time on the first two.  One the most recent one, I got seasick (and was totally unprepared for it) so now I'm not sure if I would go again.

  • Its snowing outside and kind of peaceful. I am trying to drown out work right now but that's not happening. LOL

I know how you feel. Do you have to do all of that right now? Moot Court and Law review? Maybe do one next semester just to make it a little easier?

I'm still waiting on grades too. It's getting on my nerves big time.

I was going to ask about this too.  Are you going for both?

Good luck with managing everything.  If you're anything like me, just getting everying in a list and organized in your head will make it seem a little less overwhelming at least.

Law Review and Moot Court stuff happens in March, I think.  So there is time for that, I think it's just the idea that it won't get any better.  I'm planning to try out for both in order to maximize my chances of getting on one, but will likely only join one.

As for the job stuff, CSO isn't exactly clear with timelines (which I gather is the norm for 1Ls), but I'm terrified of falling behind with that and ending up with no legal experience and getting screwed for Fall OCI.  From last semester I know that about a month into the semester I get too swept away with LRW deadlines, class prep, etc. to do anything "extra."

  • Okay, so I'm feeling much better.  I went to see my writing prof for some help with turning one of my papers into a writing sample and she gave me a huge pep talk about my credentials.  Also, I found out that none of the law review/moot court stuff happens until the end of finals, so that's a big burden off my shoulders (at least temporarily).
  • Glad you feel better, DP!
  • Everyone keeps talking about how horrible the roads are.  Unfortunately, no matter how many times I hit the refresh button on my student email account, the "school is cancelled" email doesn't show up.  Wink

I just talked to Mike and he said it's a little slippery out there.

Welcome to post-secondary eduction Stick out tongue

  • Everyone drive safe.  When I picked Willa up at 3:30, the roads were just a little slick.  I hope heavier traffic warms up the roads for y'all.

DP: glad your perspective is better now.  It's good to have someone talk you out of a hole.

I'm doing homework this afternoon.  The kids are being very quiet and helpful.

That's exactly what happened.  And for all of the lovely consolations I've been given by L, my housemates, my parents and everyone here; somehow what she said resonated with me [and it didn't hurt that she threw in some awesome compliments about my writing].  In my head I knew it was just this awful unshakeable funk that made no rational sense, but it was this dark cloud following me around.

Yay that the kids are being quiet and helpful.  I'm sure that's fantastic!

  • Has anyone been to Nashville?  Any good suggestions of what to do for an afternoon?  For sure we will be stopping at the Opry Gardens, and Opry Mills Mall (for work).  I saw that there is a zoo, but it looks small and there doesn't seem to be that many animals.  Any hotel suggestions, work will be paying this night so we can stay somewhere more extravagant than we normally would.

I haven't. Have you checked tripadvisor.com ? I used them quite a bit in planning getaways.

  • I have checked tripadvisor.  Most reviews of the zoo were ehh so we might just wing it when we get down there.  Some of the mansion tours looked interesting, but I don't want to pay between $12-$20 a person to walk around a house if it's as boring as some of the reviews on TA are...
