Speech therapist?

Do we have one around here (like on our board)? My niece was recently diagnosed with childhood apraxia and I was looking for more understanding on it

Re: Speech therapist?

  • A have a friend who is graduating this spring with a degree in speech therapy. I can put you two in touch, if you'd like.

  • I'm not one but I had a little background in school and previous experience in pediatrics. Basically, it's a condition where there is a disconnect between the brain and the muscles for speech. The child knows what to say but he/she just can't transmit the signals to produce the sound. An audiologist has to rule out first that this impairment is not caused by hearing loss. If you have any more questions, I can pass it on to the SLPs I work with.

  • I also work with a great SLP if you need anymore info or guidance!

  • Thank you ladies. She has already had her hearing tested. She is the same age a DD (3.5) and probably only says about 10 simple words.

I guess my main question is, is this something that will get better over time or will it be a life-long struggle? The mom doesnt really understand and from what I am gathering medicaide will only pay for so many speech therapy sessions and there is only 2 in the tampa area that she can go to.

  • DS is doing speech therapy. medicaid pays for 36 sessions then they re evaluate to see medical necessity and will then go ahead and extend it, we know a child that did it till he was 8. That's my understanding of how that works. Do you know what speech therapy in the tampa area she can go to? DS goes to one in Brandon a few friends of the family work there and they are very patient with him and have come recommended through a few others we know.

Hey. I am a pediatric speech langauge pathologist. Childhood apraxia is not a langauge disorder. Basically, she knows what she wants to say but it comes out differently. She will need to a doctor's order for a speech evaluation and treatment. Based on her progress, she should be able to continue until she has met her goals. Progress will not be immediate, but with time her speech should improve.

Feel free to ask me any questions.
