A couple airplane questions...

DH and I were discussing flying last night and totally disagree on a few things. Just for fun, what's your opinion on the following???

1. Is it okay to remove your shoes on a long flight (5+ hours)?

I think it's totally fine as long as you're wearing socks but DH, who doesn't particularly like feet anyway, says it's a no-no.

2. Is it okay to bring along good food to eat on the plane, not just junk you can buy in the airport?

I want to bring yummy cheeses, bread and fruit but DH says that he doesn't want it to look like we have a picnic going on.

Re: A couple airplane questions...

  • 1. Yes, as long as your feet are not stinky.  I remove my shoes on all flights over 1 hour but I always wear socks.

    2. It's okay as long as it doesn't smell.  I wouldn't want to deal with little finger foods though.  Airplanes are so germy.

  • 1.  Yes, I always remove my shoes.  I'm not sure if there's any truth to this rationale (which I likely concocted on my own), but I assume not wearing restrictive shoes is better for blood flow / circulation, and I do worry about DVT because I fly frequently.  Also it is more comfortable.  If you feet stink, this is not okay (I actually carry a spare pair of clean socks in my purse and put those on when I take my shoes off).

    2.  Agree with PP - it is ONLY okay if it doesn't smell.  I have been stuck next to people who bring the most wretched smelling food on board and it literally makes me want to vomit.  Something that isn't pungent is fine, but nothing that is aromatic (even if you think it smells good, unless it is something like cake, which is universally considered to smell delicious, and then it's rude because no one else can enjoy it).

  • 1. Yes, it's ok to remove shoes. I mean heck, some airlines still give you the slipper socks to wear (not that I do....but could).  I always have a pair of socks in my bag in case I'm wearing shoes without socks, or get cold, etc.

    2. Yes, as long as it doesn't smell. When we fly with the kids we bring enough food to feed an army LOL

  • Yes to both as long as neither is especially fragrant!
  • Yes.  Yes.

  • 1.  Yes, but socks are appreciated.  And even if you're wearing socks so I can't smell your feet, I don't want to smell your shoes either.  I also don't want your shoes to end up under my feet.

    2.  I'm actually a big fan of bringing non airport food on the plane (which I don't think LAX let's us do anymore) but I usually limit it to crackers, a banana, etc.  Nothing that requires silverware, is too fragrant, or messy.

  • Of course. The only thing I side eye is the people who go to the lavatory shoe-less. GROSS.

I never wear shoes on a plane. I even have a special pair of socks that I only wear on airplanes.

  • Yes.

Provided it's not a liquid or gel, food is fine.

I've never had a problem, and I travel frequently.

Dude, I used to live in the 'bu and have been to that gas station MANY times. It's disgusting. Like, surfers pee on the floor disgusting.

  • I personally don't remove my shoes on a plane, but I think it's OK as long as your feet aren't a stanky and you don't touch me or my stuff with them.

I always bring food with me on a plane.  Short flights you can't always count on a meal (or a decent snack), and with longer flights the food they provide isn't necessarily going to be on the schedule of when I want to eat something.  Nothing stinky though -- cheddar and mozz == OK, Limburger == NOT OK.

  • 1.  Yes.  It doesn't bother me as long as people do it discreetly and they don't smell.

    2.  Yes.  I have food allergies and have no choice but to bring my own food, so I definitely don't side-eye anyone who does this regardless of the reason.  As long as it doesn't have an over-powering scent it should be fine.

  • 1.  Yes.

    2.  Yes, but if you have to clear customs on the other side ( int'l flights) yummy cheeses and fruits are typically frowned upon.

  • Both cheese and bananas smell. Especially old banana peels. Disgusting!

Mini baby bell cheese is fine and easy to eat.

If you are going to bring oranges have them peeled and ready to eat as those can be quite smelly when peeling as well although I happen to like that smell a lot.

  • Yes to both questions.

I usually remove my shoes after a few hours, especially if the flight is a red eye and I'm trying to sleep. Socks are necessary to keep my feet warm.

We are vegan so we have to bring our own food onto a flight. Some airlines do offer vegan options, but we've found those choices aren't always actually vegan.

  • 1. Of course. It's your space. I like to curl up into a ball so I have to take my shoes off.

    2. Yes, like PP's said, as long as it doesn't have a strong smell.

This. I hate feet, and even I have no problem with shoes being off on the plane (socks on though, the thought of bare feet touching dirty plane floor is disgusting).

seems to me your DH is worrying too much :)

  • Team you, but agree with pp's caveat about neither being too fragrant, haha!

  • 1.  Yes.  I always wear socks on a plane though.

    2. Yes.   I also bring napkins and handwipes.

After all the plane delays, missed connections, rebookings and other BS that I have dealt with at the airport, they can cope with my picnic.

  • 1. I personally don't take my shoes off, but if others want to, more power to them. Just no stinky feet please.

    2. I bring on food to the plane a lot of times. As long as it doesn't have a super strong scent, I'm cool with whatever people bring on.

  • Team OP.  But, I think that barefeet are gross; socks should be worn.  Food shouldn't be fragrant (neither should feet).

Last flight the girl next to be had McDonald's.  I felt sick the entire flight due to the smell.

  • I wouldn't remove my shoes, gross!

I do bring my own food.

  • Bring peanuts and a small dog.

Wave both around the cabin frequently to distract from your Camembert and stank feet.

Mxlosi - I'm so with you on the shoeless pee thing, GROSS, dude.

Banana eaters on planes, I hate you a lot.

  • 1. Absolutely. Even on an 8-hour daytime flight, everyone still takes their shoes off. Businessmen, families, whatever. I hardly see anyone who leaves them on the whole time. Especially since a lot of people's feet swell, which can makes shoes very uncomfortable.

    2. Yes, within reason. As PPs mentioned, anything with a strong smell is a definite no-no, and you'll want food that's easy to manage in the cramped quarters and limited elbow room of an airplane seat (i.e. limited cutting, utensil usage, and table space). And you might think twice about anything with peanuts, since that managed to launch a board war around here. (The premise being that other passengers may have severe peanut allergies.)

I took a flight yesterday and a guy next to me smelled like an ash tray. I gagged the entire flight.  I'll take feet and food over that any day.
