It sounds cool. You guys on the west side sure pull together and help each other. I dig that a lot!
I've never heard of Hello, West Michigan. It is a very friendly and welcoming community -- I can tell you that, though!
Tell someone you're new in town and they love to tell you all about the city. I learned this when I moved here.

Questions for everyone: How long have you lived in West MI? Was it a big change from where you previously lived? Do you think you'll stay there forever?

Here's my newest nephew who just turned 6 months old today:
1.) 31 of my 32 years. (I was born over in Mount Clemens just north of Detroit.)
2.) No clue.
3.)No clue. Changes day to day. Some days we are happy and content and then DH throws me for a loop and starts talking about moving to Traverse City or Chicago.???? TC being the most recent choice.
I grew up in Warren, moved to W MI for GVSU. Left for a few years. When it was time to put down roots, I chose to come back to GR. Because of close family ties, we'll probably stay in MI forever, and we really love it here. Would love it so much more w/out that blasted 4th season.
I hear that! West MI never crossed my mind when we decided that it was time to look for jobs outside of the Detroit area. I had assumed that we would have a forreal LDM for a while. If I HAD to leave my family, I wanted a warmer climate dangit!! I get cold in 60 degree weather lol
We will be working hard for that retirement/vacation home in a warmer place. My great uncle had a condo in Hilton Head that he'd go to in the winter...LOVED it!
GRSP, I thought the facts of this couple's case sounded a little different from your friends, so I doubted that they were the same. But the general description was so similar, that I thought it could be possible. Also, I only saw the shortest snippet on the news and read in CC because I was at the gym.
Kasa, I think their main issue is that one mom adopted one child and the other adopted another child (similar to what GRSP's friends wanted to do), but now there are legal issues with consenting to medical care, what happens if one parent dies, etc. If you read a newspaper article, you're probably much more well versed than me.
As a sidenote, I think something along these lines might be an interesting topic for a law review note (if I'm fortunate enough to be selected for law review).

I know the feeling! Hats off to you (and your H) for taking this on while a newlywed. If it's any consolation, I think taking on the long distance challenge is such a powerful statement of commitment to each other as well as support for the goals and dreams of your partner. I know there isn't a day that passes where I don't think about how grateful I am to L that he was supportive.
I was born in Flint (and my parents have resettled near there--both were originally from SE MI), but my parents moved to southwest MI (Niles/St.Joe area) when I was six. Since then, I've always lived on the west side (Holland, Grandville and now Grand Haven).
I knew I liked it, but didn't fully appreciate it until we almost moved to CA in 2010 and then again until coming to SE MI last fall. I love the lake and natural beauty most of all and I really miss being around people who feel as much attachment to the lake as I do. It's also weird (but not bad) to be politically liberal in a sea of liberals--I'm so used to seeking out like-minded people rather than just running into them everywhere. It's hard to explain, but I feel like "my" part of Michigan is sort of unknown to Detroiters (which I'm using very loosely to encompass all of SE MI).
Thanks DP. It's hard, but we will be better for it. And we'll have a longer newlywed phase lol. I didn't anticipate living apart but what doesn't kill you, right? Our husbands are troopers! I'm blessed to have him.
Interesting perspective DP, but I hear you on West Mich being unknown to those in the SE. I can't tell you how many people have me the
face when I tell them "Oh yeah, I'm moving to WM in May". Some people have no idea what the other side can offer. I'll admit GR wasn't on my radar either. But I'm glad that I'm learning and will be able to experience it first hand in the Spring!

Do you think you'll stay there forever? Not sure. I don't currently have any plans to relocate, but that doesn't mean I never will.
1) I moved here to go to college in 2003. I moved here with my husband and "settled" in 2005.
2) I came from a small, isolated, rural town in northern Michigan. So, GR is a "big city" in my mind. I love the conveniences of a big city. And honestly, I like the weather (winter is shorter here than where I come from, but I really love all of the seasons). And it is different culturally -- there are so many more young people here compared to my town. It's much more vibrant and interesting.
3) That's the million dollar question. I'm somewhat interested in moving to Traverse City. B keeps saying we should move somewhere warm, but I truly think he's just BSing. We don't have much for roots here, so we don't have to stay. We're just not sure where we'd rather be (if anywhere). We wouldn't leave GR because we don't like it here -- there just may be somewhere that's a better fit for us. My biggest wish is that we lived closer to one of the big lakes and closer to my family. We've been talking a lot about buying a new home -- one that would hopefully be our "forever" home. But before we do that, we need to decide where we want to be "forever".
