What kind of dog?

Re: What kind of dog?

  • We have a collie/wind hound mix. I lurve him as he?s a great size at only 14 kilos. He?s got the stamina and collie dispostion, but the speed and grace of a grayhound. He didn?t bark for the first year we had him, but he?s gotten quite territorial since LO came on the scene and he feels he needs to protect her. He does shed a lot, but he?s a people magnet and when we?re out people are always coming up to us and asking what kind of dog he is and talking about how handsome he is.

  • I would get a Golden Retriever - I grew up with one (Minnie) and she was SO gentle and loving and I just LOVE that breed - they are amazing family dogs :)

  • I had boxers with XH and while they are great dogs they are way too high energy for me to handle on my own. I'm adopting a dog when I leave my parents house but it will be small enough for me to bring out with me or bring to my parents if I need to go out of town.

Right now I want a dachshund but would consider Yorkies, Shih Tzus and other small breeds. It all depends on who needs to be adopted and what would be a good fit.

  • Good point . I definitely recommend matching the dog to you / your family's energy. Siri is a baby in the house and excellently behaved usually but that's only because we wear him out with 5-10 miles of running/walking a day. Boxers have the best personalities but also demanding.
  • Loved seeing all the pups!

Great advice too and many things to think about.

H loves boxers, I'm open to anything, so we will see. I'm sure I will have a ton of questions when we get closer to actually getting a dog!

I want a Newfie! Contrary to what you might think, they are actually quite apartment friendly as they are laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazy.
My mum's friends Newfie is staying in an apartment at the moment, the dog sister can't get him out of the house for a second walk, he just refuses!!

H wants a Beagle.  I want either a Rhodesian Ridgeback:

    or a Vizsla:

Although we won't be getting a dog until we live in a house, so I'm 95% sure we'll be going with a Ridgeback when that happens.  H travels for work and if I'm alone in a house I'd feel more safe with a dog bred to fight off lions than with a hound or a pointer/retriever--especially if we end up in any of the places being thrown about as a possible next posting.

We have a Vizsla/Black Lab mix, he is such a great dog!  He looks just like a Vizsla but is much darker brown with a little white on him.   We also have a miniature schnauzer and a yorkie-poo!
