don't be scared to google it-- it's not gross or anything.
it's basically a cup that catches menstrual blood. you insert it like a tampon, and every 8-12 hours, you pull it out and pour out the liquid.
not for me, but a few girls on our board use it.

Instead of using a tampon you use a Diva cup. It is made from latex rubber, and you insert it similar to the way you would a tampon (is what I've understood). It's re-useable so you dump/rinse it out and re-insert.
Make sense?
Btw it's not that scary if you look it up!

No, but I've seriously thought about it. I use a chemical free pad (online company), which if I really wanted to run that as a business I could make money on it... probably never will switch to a Diva Cup either.

Side note, has anyone seen the sea sponge tampon at whole foods? It's a sea sponge that you shove up in your hooha and then rise out later to reuse.

Never seen it or heard of it.. but I'd really give it the side eye, because to me that seems like it wouldn't even be sanitary!

Diva cup is actually made of medical-grade silicone, but others are made of latex. There are probably 15 different brands available (various shapes, sizes, materials). It is emptied into the toilet, wiped with TP and/or rinsed in the sink. There is a special pH-balanced cleanser that can be used; i just use water and lots of women use hand soap. At the end of the cycle, after washing it it is sanitized by boiling it in water for 10 minutes. I use a special pot for it, but not everyone does.
Cons:It has to be emptied
It involves close contact with one's reproductive anatomy, including fluids
There is a steep (but short) learning curve
It requires a high up-front cost
It's hard to know if you'll like it and/or which "model" works for you before trying one
Pros:
You don't need to carry pads/tampons with when you go out
You can wear it for 12 hours (though lots of people wear it longer with no problem)
You can insert it when you anticipate the start of your period, instead of having to wait as you would with pads
It holds a lot (with tampons, regardless of the absorbency, and even with a pad as backup overnight would often be messy; i've not had a single leak -- overnight or daytime -- since i started using DC)
It has measurement lines so you can track flow (esp. helpful with certain medical conditions)
You can empty it whenever you want, unlike with a tampon (so you can empty it before leaving the house and not have to do it when out)
It costs $30 and lasts years
Nothing to buy, nothing to carry around, nothing to store
Doesn't have the risk of TSS that tampons do
Doesn't change vaginal chemistry or fluids like tampons do
You don't feel it when it is in
