Welcome to Hazard

Since my dogs name is Duke, will it be weird if I name my kid Luke?  Should I change Sascha's name to Daisy, and trade my car in for the General Lee?

I think we pretty much have our name choice narrowed down to Lucas or Jacob, and Lucas seems to be gaining an edge.

Re: Welcome to Hazard

  • I love Lucas.  Lucas Jacob isn't bad if you want use both.

  • who has to change their name to cooter?

  • I like both names.  One of my friends is due in August and she has settled on Luca for a boy -- I want to gently encourage her to choose Lucas instead.

I like Luca too.  He was a hot doctor on ER.

Does she live on the second floor?

  • I like them both. I think I prefer Lucas, because Jacob seems to be very popular lately.

  • I also like both names.  At one point we had settled on Lucas Nathaniel for our boy's name had Delilah been a boy.

That song immediately popped into my head when she said she liked Luca.

  • I really like Lucas too.

I also love Luca, but I am a filthy goombah, so that is to be expected.

Let's not let an awful song ruin a fine name.

  • I like both names, but Lucas does make me think of this

  • I love Lucas. And Luca. And Jacob (although that always makes me think of twilight)
  • I like Lucas and Jacob.
    image
  • Jacob is very popular, and my H hates the twilight association, which is why it's currently losing to Lucas.  But it's my H's name, and I love it.  We would most likely call him Jack.  Actually, I would just name him Jack, but my H has this weird thing about naming kids nicknames.

Mashed, I don't know what that picture is. Do I need to google?

  • whaa?  You've never seen Lucas?  Go watch it.

  • I am strongly against naming a kid after a parent as well as naming them something and then calling them something else.  Plus, Jacob has been ruined by Twilight for at least another 5 years.

I love the name Lucas.  It's been on my list of potential names for a while.

  • I don't like naming kids after parents either.

But I also think Luke and Duke is a little odd.

Sorry to hear you have to start over with this.

  • I'm torn on naming a kid one thing and calling them another.  Sometimes I think it's dumb, other times it doesn't bother me.

I think it doesn't bother me if it is a common nick name. Like naming your kid Jason and calling him Jay is fine, but naming him Jason and calling him Frank is not.

There's that, but naming a kid John and calling him Jack doesn't bother me, maybe because it seems to be common on the Irish side of my family.  I don't have a problem with just naming a kid Jack either.

I also dislike naming kids after the parents.

Excuse my while I go cross Cali off my list of potential middle names.

I am (in theory) against naming a kid one thing, and calling them something else. I prefer names with no nickname options for just this reason.  BUT, my h thinks every foffing name is really just a nickname for some other more elaborate name, and insists that we only use the full version.   So, I've kind of given up that fight.

  • Daggers nickname is Jimmy Jams. It's short for Ryker.
  • If you name your kid Jason and end up calling him Jay, I think that's no big deal.  But if you want a kid named Jay so you name him Jason, that's where I take issue.

Boxer, I forgot that your H is a crazy person.  I will reign in my expectations a bit.  But either way, I still vote for Lucas.  Or Desmond.

I keep feeling like this conversation is about my brother. It's all trippy, like "How did you know I call him Jay?"

    Clearly, everything is about me.

  • I like both names a lot. We rarely call Miles by his first name alone. We call him 'M. Tate' or 'Mr. Tate' (Tate is his middle name). He refers to himself as 'My Tate'. Even my 2 1/2 y o niece calls him Mr. Tate.

At this point, I'm just happy that he hasn't shouted "Lucas isn't a name! It's short for Lucastopher!!!"

I don't know.  I think some names look better on a resume and gives the kid a better option for professional settings.  Like, Christie is a cute name for a kid, but I'd rather my adult child have the option to use Christine.

This is pretty much our line of thinking.  Andrew is more professional than Andy, but I find it very weird when people call him Andrew now.  Plus, my H wanted him to have the option of Andrew, Andy, or Drew when he gets older.  My husband is not a fan of his own name.  It sounds like a girls name, is spelled like a made up name, and has no other option for nickname.  He's bitter.

I like Lucas and Jacob.  However, now that Mashed mentioned it, all I can think of is Lucaplacia.
