Since it's slow- House renovation

So, we moved out on Sunday and they have been working this week. Not a lot done yet, but it's so exciting to see the old crap out.

I went by today and took some pics. My before pics are on my camera, but here is what it looked like today

Here is our bedroom. In here we are doing new flooring, bedding, ceiling fan without light, recessed lighting and sconces. We are also replacing those french doors that led to the bathoom and took up too much space and replacing it with the door below.

image

The bathroom as a whole. We are getting closets rebuilt (the left is clothes and the right is for laundry. We are organizing them in a way to make them more useable even though we don't have more room. Also the ones on the left had two doors with a wall in between which we ripped out and are putting 3 sliding doors in so we can access more.

image

We are getting new everything here (toilet, cabinets, sink stuff) but keeping the light and the mirror but those are getting raised. We had the shortest freaking cabinets in the world before.

 image

Our shower. We are adding a wall of tile to partially close it off and also making a bench and shelves for bathroom junk

image

And here is the shower tile we are using. We are doing a hopscotch pattern with 4 different sizes. I want to marry this tile. I love it deeply. It is cleft, so it has a texture to it which I also love

image

And finally, here is the reason I am so glad to not be in our house. This is our living/dining area leading toward the kitchen. Totally unlivable!

image

I would be happy to share pics of our fixtures too, but I am not sure if anyone is bored enough for or interested enough in that.

Re: Since it's slow- House renovation

  • oh and we don't have our final exact colors but we are doing mustard for the walls and chocolate brown as accents (closet doors, cabinets, etc) in both rooms

And no more chair rail and wainscoting in the bathroom.

  • This is so exciting! Makes me want a place of my own so bad.

Am I remembering right that this is an older house?

  • Fun!  I love that door that you are putting in.

I have so many things I want to do to our house.  But, money and laziness, too much of one, not enough of the other.

  • It was built in 1920 okla. They added that bathroom and a den in 1998 though so it was originally just a 2/1
  • I'd love to see the fixtures you've picked out.  I'd really like to do some reno in our house too.  Just not sure where we'd start.

This is my favorite type of house. The historic homes are creeping up in price here, though. I could buy a new construction (granted, nothing upgraded or fancy) 3/2 in the 'burbs for cheaper than I could get a 2/1 older home in a few areas of the city.

  • So exciting! My house was built in 1929. Love old houses. Can't wait to see the finished pix
  • Why are you replacing the flooring in the bedroom and what with?

Our reno starts this weekend too.  Nothing big -- just FINALLY starting on finishing the basement family room space.  We both have tomorrow off so we can move everything out of the way.  I also need to select what washing machine to buy before they put up the handrail for the stairs since it'll be easier to put in while that's all open.

Getting started was hard. We would look at things, get overwhelmed with options and not know what to pick out first.

We ended up starting with the sink

This is our sink, but in black

    Here is our faucet

It's from Cifial and has no pretty name

    image

The terlet, from Toto (not the bidet). Also in black

    image

This is our handheld shower nozzle and controls for the shower from Kohler Simplicity. We also have the matching hotel towel rack, toilet paper rolls, etc

    image

And this is our rainforest shower head from Hansgrohe, only ours will be wall mount with an arm and not from the ceiling

Why are you replacing the flooring in the bedroom and what with?

You cannot tell but that is actually subflooring and it is so terribly terribly uneven. We are having to float it out majorly. We are replacing it with porcelain tile (it will be the same tile across both rooms. And then we will do an area rug in the bedroom.

It is similar to this, but I don't think this is exactly it

    image

  • I was thinking the other day I just need to start making a list of what I'd like to see done and then keeping notes when I find stuff we like.

I love the idea of the black terlet and that shower looks uh-mazing.

Dammit...now I want to start ripping stuff up.

    image
  • Do it garlictits. I will say I wanted to give all of this up just a month ago. It just seemed like too many things hinged on too many other things and I could not make a decision. If you see stuff you like, even if it just inspires you, save it. Do a pinterest or something.
  • On the topic of house renovations, anyone know how to change out 3 ceramic tiles smack dab in the middle of the backsplash behind our stove without ripping the entire thing out?

  • I have no idea. Our handyman replaced a few and needed some kind of saw thing to make a clean cut to keep it from cracking surrounding ones.

That's what I'm afraid of and the reason they're still there 2 years later.

  • WOWZA! Looks really awesome already! I love the molding in the bedroom. Very nice. Its always amazing to me to see how spacious homes can be in other cities. My best friend lived in Houston for a couple of years and she always told me how much more space you get for your money there. Looks like it's going to be beautiful!

Thanks! And it's funny because by Houston standards our house is tiny. The burbs give you three times the space for the money. But I wouldnt trade it.
  • Awesome! I love your fixtures! I want to redo our master bath so badly but that's more like a 2020 project. We also have to do the upstairs in our house, but again, that's a long way off - probably 8-10 years down the road. Is your place still 2 bdrms or did you add on?

  • I think it's officially 2 November. We enclosed our den (it had no door and a pass through from our kitchen. But I has no closet and an exterior door to our patio. But it can work as a guest room which it couldn't before. In a few years we are considering popping up a second floor kid suite with two br, a jack and Jill bath and a play area. But that's far off.

Why would you bother doing that when you'll be living here by then?

Mr winged has looked at his retirement options and we are on a 6 year from now plan. So this would be 2-3 years before that.
  • I love the shower tile.
    We, we like to party.
  • It all looks great!  Is the arm for the rainforest shower head adjustable at all?  The adjustability on our was limited and it took some getting used to.
  • It has some movement which is why we went with the wall mount versus ceiling mount. It also is air injected for better pressure. But I know it will take some getting used to   Although our current shower head sucks.
  • Wow Winger.  You guys are going balls to the wall.  Exciting!  Love your fixtures and tile.  Nice choices.

Im pretty sure you can rent a tile saw.

  • Garlic, you could just rent a multi tool, cut the grout line and chisel it out. It wouldn't be too hard as long as you took your time. Winger, I can't wait to see it done.

  • Thanks everyone. I'm so excited too!
  • Ah fun!! I love your stuff! We are all caught up in this stuff too. I've really enjoyed the whole process, lots of fun stuff out there to choose from.

So when do they expect it all to be done?

Six year plan? Oof. Sorry, man.

    ETA: stuff stuff stuff. stuffstuffstuffstuffstuff.
