What word do you use to describe your bag?

Do you think the word "pocketbook" is antiquated?

Do you ever use the word "pocketbook" ?

Thank you.

Re: Please come in and tell me what you think.

  • I use the word pocketbook, but only to describe some of my smaller bags (but not the clutches). Usually I just say "purse".

This reminds me I need to buy another one (or two) because my current one is in complete disrepair and the other one no longer suits my needs.

  • I say purse.

Pocketbook is antiquated. You can tell your H that he is WRONG.

  • Purse. Or bag if it is a freakishly large purse. My grammy calls them pocketbooks, so there's that.
  • I say pocketbook. No one understands. You get me Muddled.

ETA: Oohh this is a DH debate??

  • Pocketbook = Grandma

    Purse = Everyone else

    Handbag = Dept. store employee

  • I hear "pocketbook" ALL the time here in VA, though bag and purse are also common. I call it a purse since I'm from the midwest.

  • Lurker here.. but I had to comment.

My FI calls it a pocketbook and I call it a purse.

And he calls his wallet a billfold Tongue Tied

  • Purse = the thing that holds my wallet or pocketbook

Wallet = holds my money etc.

For some reason "pocketbook" always meant an address book or Rolodex organizer or something. Sadly, I have only heard it used by my grandmother's friends.

I say wallet, but I am guessing that wallet = male & pocketbook = female.

    Mmm interesting.

  • I say purse to describe my bag.

I dont really know anyone who uses "pocketbook"  that word in my mind means wallet.

If you knew better, you'd do better.
  • I will start using the term pocketbook in hopes it catches on again.

  • i say bag most of the time, but use pocketbook too.

I never use purse...THAT word seems old to me

  • I say purse for my small-ish clutch and bag for the behemoth I carry around when I run errands or go to dinner with the kid.

  • Growing up I used pocketbook, or where I come from it's a "pockabook". Now I usually say bag or purse, although purse has an old ladyish ring to me for some reason too.

  • I've never used "pocketbook" in my life.  It's always "purse".  I will use "handbag" if I'm shopping though.

    So, basically, what Fuss said.

    This is my siggy.
  • LOL. Steve&Heather and Doglove are H's new favorite Nesties. Although, PPD may pull ahead if she revives the use of "pocketbook".

DH never uses any word but pocketbook to describe any bag that I may sling over my shoulder that is not a backpack. I tease him relentlessly for it because it is a word that I have never heard anyone outside of my grandmother's generation use. Last night, he ran in sooooo excited because he found the word used in a book. TWICE!!! OMG! This led to him requesting a poll to prove that I was crazy and that pocketbook is commonly used in the 2010's.

eta- Mags is on his good side too.

Ha. Not while I'm around. I do believe my grandmother had a big thing of Jean Nate powder though. I used to play with it when I was little.

If I recall, based on great aunt's wisdom, a handbag has a strap and a pocketbook does not? I could be wrong.  Do I have that backwards?

If there isn't any strap at all, isn't it a clutch?

  • I use either purse or "that thing with all my crap in it".

My grandma said pocketbook...along with icebox (refrigerator), and davenport (couch/sofa).

    Oh, FFS.
