A shameful AW (especially for Ojo)

So I feed my dogs Pedigree.  And I honestly never thought anything of it until reading your comments about how bad it is.  But I clearly never admitted it before.  So I did some research and am pretty ashamed of it, and have realized it's definitely also adding to the ridiculous stench that my dogs produce.

But today I went and bought Blue Buffalo for the first time, and my dogs are weaning their way off Pedigree.  I feel like my dogs are basically eating better than me now, but I know it's worth it.  Holy hell though good dog food isn't cheap.

Re: A shameful AW (especially for Ojo)

  • Taste of the wild is cheaper. You would think the company pays me the way I whore_around their food!

  • Haha, man where was your whoring before today?  I guess I also could have asked for opinions before buying it too.  I have a friend who really likes Taste of the Wild too, and that was the first I had heard of it.

  • I order on PetcareRX.com 40ish for a 30 pound bag and free shipping. Grain free BB for a 28 lbs was like 48 dollars our petsmart. Tried blue buffalo wilderness for one bag and my dogs didn't like the life source bits.

  • You can also buy Taste of the Wild at Tractor Supply (if you have one, of course).

My dog refused to eat the small super nutrition or super vitamin (??) pebbles that were in Blue Buffalo. So, we tried Taste of the Wild and she loved it.

We switched to a different one but I don't have the package because we have it in a container. I'll have to update at some point with the name (we are buying more soon).

I hope your dogs enjoy their new food!

  • Yep. But it's more expensive at the tractor supply co. Ours is 45 for a 30 pound bag. Sometimes I get coupons off so it's around 37 for a bag. Always free shipping on orders of 35 or more! I do get the canned food there because I don't want to order 24 cans since I only do it for their birthday/gotcha day/Xmas/iloveyouverymuchday..

How do you get free shipping?  I ordered from PetcareRx for the first time yesterday, and the site would only give me free shipping on $49 or more.

  • Premium dog food is expensive for sure but soooo worth it! Good for you for making the switch. I guarantee you will notice a difference in their energy, coats, poop (smell and consistency), and overall health. Our dog had quite a bit of gas on Blue Buffalo because it's so high in protein, but he does wonderfully on Natural Balance's L.I.D line. Taste of the Wild is also a great option.

  • I decided that when Riley finishes the rest of his food, we'll switch him over to Blue Buffalo. I've only read and hear a lot of good things about it! Although I'm not sure whether to get Wilderness or Life Protection, suggestions anyone? I am pet stupid and don't really know what is cheap or expensive when it comes to dog food.... Riley is on Eukanuba right now and I've been finding out the stuff in the ingredients and found out he's not getting the best. I feel like a bad mom but the store we got him from recommended that.

Another good one I've been hearing about is Nutro Ultra? Apparently they have it at the commissary for cheaper too and it's a nice cheaper version of Blue. Let me know how the dogs like Blue! Also, we should do a playdate!

  • that's wonderful!  the payoff for their overall health will be huge!  my dogs eat blue buffalo too.
  • Pet Supplies Plus off Indian River might carry ToTW too if you want to try to find it local.

  • Since we're talking about it, someone tell me about Diamond.  The person we got our dobie mix from was feeding her that so we switched since real meat was the first ingreedient and it's still pretty inexpensive.  No one talks about it so I'm wondering if it's not so great.  I'm going out to buy dog food today so if I should switch I'll prob buy a small bag of Diamond plus something else.  We shop at Tractor Supply if that helps.

Yep, we feed Sasha (our 5 month old puppy - long-haired dachshund/terrier mutt) Nutro Ultra for Puppies.  I'm curious about what others think of that brand - reading the ingredients, it all sounds good!  And my dog has great energy, healthy coat, regular BMs, but obviously I want to do what is best for her in the long run so I still have a healthy and happy dog at 15 years old ideally!

I do know it has grains in it, so if the dogs have problem with grains I can see why it's best to do Blue.  What's the advantages of it other than that?

Yeah, on dog food.  It also told me that coupons aren't allowed on dog food orders. Either I'm doing something wrong, or I have the worst timing ever and decided to order when they changed their policies.

  • I don't have a dog but I feed my kitten science diet. It's also kinda pricey but she loves it and is really healthy. I've heard good things about the brand in general
  • My dog(dachshund) was on pedigree for a long time, I kept wanting to switch her but couldn't decide what to switch her too and she seemed fine on pedigree. I finally decided to make the switch and went with Wellness, I don't think I've really noticed a difference(it's been over a year) but I know it's better for her so I'm happy with my decision. I also get a coupon from their website that gives me $3 off, but before I switched her I was going back and forth between Wellness and BB, but BB doesn't give coupons.

There's a dog food analysis website that I use to check out dog food, they post it over on the pets board.

Zims, I'd rethink Science Diet.  I've heard they use a lot of "animal by-product" and they've had a history of recalls.  You want the ingredients to specifically say what kind of meat is being used - "by-product" is usually scraps and not heavily regulated, so it could have rat meat, rancid meat, even dog meat (though I'd like to believe that's a myth).

  • OP, that's great!  The cost balances out because they eat less and in the long run they'll have fewer problems.

I'd steer clear of Diamond (they have frequent recalls) and Nutro. Both have lots of fillers.  To the one who was asking about Wilderness vs Life Protection or whatever it was, I choose Wilderness. I had to board all of my dogs unexpectedly a couple years ago and Ziwi Peak isn't sold in many stores, so we went with Wilderness since I found it locally. Bandit didn't do well with the potatoes (itchy paws), but Wilson did great on it.

And a huge ditto to the poster who said to rethink Science Diet.

Oh ew! I don't wanna feed my kitten those! Thanks for the heads up plus she's pretty low on her dry food. May be time to change!

  • I think we are going to have to re-evaluate the doxie duos food here again soon. Simon does fantastic on the BB Basic, minus itchy paws( however a lot of that for him is grass too), but Darcy gets SO gassy. So gassy. I'm thinking we might transition to Wellness for a while and see how that goes.

  • Good thing I'm going dog food shopping today.  Do you think a 15 pound bag of the old food will be enough to mix when changing 3 dogs over?  I'm assuming FIL will want to switch his dog to better food as well.

Okay, I always heard to transition over a week or longer. Each of your dogs eats roughly 2 cups so that is one-ish pound a day per dog. 15 pounds divided by three is 5 days. I'd do it only if I added pumpkin to their meals. When I got my pound pup, I switches him cold turkey from whatever crap from the shelter to blue buffalo because that's what I was feeding at the time. He had terrible diarrhea from the shelter and kennel cough. About tree days in his poo was golden.

Hmm maybe I'll just do cold turkey and crate them at night til their poo gets normal again.  All three get diarrhea if you look at them wrong...talk about weak stomachs.

The good news is their tummies might get better after a while on better food! If you don't already, you might want to consider keeping plain yogurt (for probiotics) and plain canned pumpkin (regulates consistency of poo) on hand. I freeze it in ice cube trays, but you could just plop a tablespoon into their bowl.

The regular Nutro brands did look like they had a lot of fillers (half potato or rice isn't what I want to feed my dog - I don't eat much grains myself as I don't believe they have much nutritional value!).  However, their Ultra brand seemed a lot better - it's main ingredient is chicken, and has a very readable list of ingredients.

Oooooh that sounds good!  My dog loves eating ice cubes, so how much better would it be for her to eat yogurt and pumpkin ice cubes?  I could mix in some homemade organic chicken broth and freeze it into her Kong and she'd go NUTS!

My mom had to feed her Australian Shepherd yogurt once for tummy issues but I hadn't even put two and two together.  Thanks for the tip.
