  I have do's and don'ts.  Personal preference only and some may like these, but as for me:

  Do: very slightly boot cut jeans.  Make sure they sit on your natural waist - not below and make sure they kiss the tops of your shoes with just a little bit of slack.  I think the fit is more important than the actual brand, but I love Rock & Republic on men (very nice to the buttocks area) and Levi's actually have some nice new styles.

  Don't: "dad jeans".

  Do: long sleeved button downs - again: fit is key.  Make sure the shoulders fit and always keep it tucked in.  I don't particularly like plaid, but that's just me.  Solids are always nice and classic as are gingham or checks.

  Don't: What I refer to as "Homer Simpson shirts".  Short sleeved button downs are so sloppy no matter who is wearing them.  Matt Groening put him in that outfit for a reason!

  Do: understated shoes.  No laces.  Just need one black and one brown pair.  Make sure you have a leather belt in each color too.  I'd shy away from boots unless they're of the cowboy variety.

  I used to love to shop at Nordstrom Rack for my XH.  Designer jeans are half the price than at the regular Nordstrom.  Not sure if you have one near, but it's worth looking into.

  Good advice all around. I'd throw in about the jeans to just be careful you don't get them too HIGH, either. High waisted jeans = no no no. Darker washes are better, and please stay away from the ripped up, uber whiskered, etc., varieties.

  In re: the shirts, ditto on the fit (depending on your build, you might need a slim fit - I know my ex did, and he was athletic), but I'm not a huge fan of tucked in shirts (unless it's with a suit, or dress pants). I'm 31, though, so maybe it's an age thing.

   American Eagle has very good jeans IMO. The cut is great, the price is right (under $50) and they are good quality. 

  Greed, american eagle makes great jeans. I've had pairs that, if I hadn't porked up, would still be in great shape...I just can't wear them now

  I'd go Nordstrom and work with a personal shopper. You can give them a budget. Also they can alter things for you as needed. And the shoppers are free. 

   This! The shopper is the best idea so far. She/he will be able to see you and put you in a few nice things. You can find budget/discount items in the same style after you have a few good pieces and an idea of what looks best on you.

  My H did this years ago and said it was the best thing he ever did. I absolutely love the way he dresses now and he got all his great ideas from the Nordstrom shopper.
