What's in a name? Opinions needed.

Hi Ladies. I'm a lurker here. But, DH and I have a Family Matter that we would like some feedback on.

DD is due in one week. We are going round and round with a name. We aren't the types to have several options and then choose one once she is born. We want the name fully picked out ahead of time.

Her initials will be KIB. Middle name is Irene after my grandma. Last name doesn't matter for privacy reasons, but it is two syllables.

At first we decided on Kate. Just Kate. Not after anyone in particular. We like it because it is a strong name and also sounds good for a girl and for an older woman. While we were discussing it as an option in the car, DS, who is 20 months, overheard us, and repeated it, which was exceptionally cute to hear him say. So, we thought Kate Irene.

Now, the option has come up to do Katelyn Irene. Still, giving us the option to shorten to Kate, but providing a more formal alternative if she ever wants it.

I won't say who, but one of us wants Kate Irene and the other wants Katelyn Irene. So, what do you Nesties think? TIA!

P.S. Katherine is out as I have a cousin named that.

Re: What's in a name? Opinions needed.

  • I don't like the Single Syllable First Name Single Syllable Middle Name Two Syllable Last name pattern.

I prefer the Two Syllable First Name option.

  • Kate Irene doens't roll off the tongue well to me. I need full names that I can holler at them when they've done wrong.

  • I like them both, but Katelyn Irene is my favorite.

  • I like Katelyn better. It rolls off the tongue more.

  • I don't like one syllable first names and TBH Kate Irene doesn't flow well

    I vote for Katelyn Irene.

  • Katelyn definitely. Call her Kate, but she will always have the option of having a more formal name.

  • If you name her Katelyn, you can always call her Kate.

  • I think you're over thinking this.  Either way you plan on calling her kate, so it won't really matter what's on the birth certificate.

If you call her Kate her whole life she's likely never going to use a "formal" alternative, if she want's to go formal she'd do "Ms Lastname".

Why not just name her what you want to call her?

  • I like Katelyn better but I have an aversion to single syllable first names. I have a single syllable first name and I wish my mom would have given me the longer, formal version.
  • Katelyn Irene flows better.  Plus she won't be teased about her hick parents not giving her a real first name.

  • They're both lovely names, but I prefer Katelyn Irene. With a two-syllable last name, it just flows better. You can still call her Kate, but she will have the option of using the longer, 'formal' version of her name if she wants.
  • Katelyn Irene sounds nicer.

  • Eh, I've never been a fan of using a nickname as a formal first name. I like Katelyn Irene better. More options for your DD down the road. Good luck!
  • I like Katelyn Irene better.

Why do you have to rule out Katherine though?   That'd actually be my favorite.   Does your cousin have the same last name?   Do you call her Kate?   If you call her Katherine, and you're going to call your DD Kate, it's not really a problem.

Just my thoughts, but I do like Katelyn better here.

  • honestly-i dont like either.

  • My DS's name is Jacob, but most people call him Jake and I intended to call him Jake when I named him.  I named him Jacob so he would have a formal/professional sounding legal name if he so chooses to use it that way someday.

So, name her Katelyn and call her Kate.

  • I like Kate. I think Katelyn is overdone. There are about 3453049806983405 different spellings for Katelyn, so that will always be an issue. I think it is pretty trendy.

  • I don't like Katelyn, I just have never really liked that name.

I love Kate but Katherine is my favorite. I don't think it matters at all that it is your cousin's name.

  • I like Katelyn better, but I'm not at all a fan of the spelling.

  • "Katelyn Irene Whatsizname, you get in here right this minute!"

     or

"Kate Irene Whatsizname, you get in here right this minute!"

    I like option 1

  • My parents named me Rebecca but called me Becky my entire life (they still do as does all of my family and most of my friends).  I've personally really liked having the option of using Rebecca for work/formal occasions and using Becky informally and with family.  My vote would be to give her a longer formal name (either Katherine or Katelyn) to leave the option open for her in the future.  Also, for what it's worth, I like Rebecca better with my married name...which obviously there was no way of predicting at birth :)
  • Thanks everybody. We appreciate the feedback.
  • I know you said it's out, but I would vote for Katherine. Katelyn is NMS and Kate Irene doesn't flow well.
  • My mother always used to say when naming children or dogs, scream the names you are considering really loud three times to see what sounds best. Since you will be hollering it all the time anyway :-)

I vote Katelyn.  But I have always been partial to that name Smile

  • I don't personally like it when people give kids nicknames as a given name.  I know two people who have done this and I just think is very odd.  I makes me think the parents don't know the origin of the nickname or something.

Katelyn is NMS personally but I love Kate - that said, I think the more formal option is better.   You'll probably call her Kate anyway as the other posters have suggested. I like Irene as a middle name very much.

I am so happy my mom was vetoed on her original name choice for me which was Abby.  Not Abigail, Abby which is cute and all but it's a nickname.

  • I'm a fan of naming kids names that you can tailor to fit their personality. For example, Samantha can be either a girly name, or a tomboy name. Just like Katelyn.

I think Katelyn Irene sounds more elegant. Also, decide if you like the nickname Katie, because I think that if you name her Kate, it will end up as Katie. Kaitlyn is also a cool spelling, as well as Katelin.

Just my two cents. :) Good luck, and congrats!!!

  • I vote for Katelyn.
  • I like Kate, but agree that it doesn't roll off the tongue easily, but does that really matter? I cannot count the times on both hands that I have ever had my first and middle name said at the same time.

I dislike Katelyn, sorry. IMO, there is nothing "formal" about it and it sounds very babyish, like she wouldn't grow up with it well at all.

Are there other alternatives for Kate besides Katherine? Kathleen? Katia? Katarina?

FWIW, I think Kate is a fine standalone name.

  • I don't like nicknames as legal names. I have relatives named just Tami and Tim. It's weird.

One of my coworker's name was legally Cindy and she disliked it enough to have it changed to Cynthia.
