Do people at your gym do this?

Yesterday in bodypump I was doing my thing when I noticed that the girl next to me had taken her shirt off and was in only a sports bra.  It was quite distracting due to her overly large, fake chest.

Is it normal to workout sans shirt at your gym?  It was the first time I've ever seen anyone do it at any of the gyms I've been a member of.

Re: Do people at your gym do this?

  • I've never noticed any girls wearing only a sports bra.  There's a woman that I know who runs outdoors with just a sports bra sometimes in the summer, and when ever I see her running at the gym she's always wearing a tank.

  • I've never seen anyone at my gym do it, but then again, almost everyone there is like 65 and older when I'm there, so I don't think I would want to see that!

I've seen girls run outside and run races with only a sports bra, and *most* of them had the body to pull it off.  I get extremely hot, so it would be a benefit at times to take my shirt off, but I'm not comfortable enough showing my stomach like that for me to do it.

Why was it distracting to you?  Just curious.

  • yes, the jump rope workout girl does so in just a sports bra. I've seen a few others do it too.  But it's not in an overly "look at my boobs" kind of way, they're just regular sports bras, not a "sexy" sports bra.

It doesn't make me uncomfortable to see them, just jealous because the girls that do it have awesome bodies (and no fake boobs, or at least that I can tell)

  • I've never seen it at my gym, but I go to a community fitness center where the largest workout populations are seniors & high school kids. Smile. I do see women in sports bras outside running in summer, but I guess that's rather different.

  • When I run on our treadmill at home I almost always take my shirt of because the room gets so hot! I'd love to do it at the gym too, but no one should suffer the punishment of seeing me like that.  I think if you have a decent body and your chest doesn't bounce around too much, you can do it.

It was distracting b/c your tatas were freaking enormous

  • I only saw it a few times...and didn't go unnoticed. It was quite entertaining to watch the men stare when I woman was just in a sports bra from my perch on the treadmill.

In high school and college I would run outside in a sports bra all the time. I had the body for it back then though and it was very comfortable.

Oops, just saw that in your original post!  D'oh!

  • I use to do it all the time at my gym, especially in classes because the rooms would get hot and especially in bodypump and boxing b/c I had having stuff on my arms.  Back then my workout gear did not really include wicking tanks, just regular t-shirts so obviously I would be uncomfortable.  I didn't feel out of place because other women did it too at times.  It's much less common on the gym floor.

  • No, but I go to the YMCA which is very "family friendly" and the rules clearly state that shirts must be worn when working out.

LOL, well, mine are definitely not enormous, that's for sure!

  • I don't see this at my current gym.  When I was in grad school and worked out at the university gym there were always girls in their sports bras and teeny tiny shorts during meat market hours (4-7 PM).  They weren't sweaty at all, LOL.

  • I see it a lot and I have done it myself, fake tata's and all.  It is pretty common where I teach and workout and is NBD in my opinion.  If you can pull it off, why not?
  • I used to in college, during this class I took that was instructed by a maniac - it was the best class I have ever taken and still, 15 years later, nothing comes close to the intensity level. I would get so hot and back then wicking stuff wasn't as prevalent and I was poor anyway and would be wearing a cotton fraternity keg party shirt.

I was a tiny little 100 pound thing with D cup boobs (real) so I suppose it could have been a bit distracting, but it wasn't my fault I had big boobs. I don't think that chest size should matter, as long as they are strapped down.

ETA: This was not a college gym.

  • I see people doing this on the street in the summertime here because it is so hot, but I don't recall seeing it at my gym. I also belong to a gym that has mostly older people (50+).
  • It happens a lot in group fitness at my gym, but not on the gym floor.

It doesn't bother me, I just wish I looked good enough to do it myself (though I wouldn't).

  • I've never seen it at the gyms I go to but I did see the shortest pair of shorts ever the other day.  They were just barely bigger than a pair of panties and her butt cheeks actually showed while she was running.  She had a thick, muscular body and not a super skinny body but could have used an extra few inches on them either way!

  • I wouldn't say it bothered me, b/c do what you want with yourself, it makes no difference to me, it was just surprising b/c you never see it here.

and we were in warm up, so, uh, yeah

  • Yep, there's a woman who runs on the TM in just a sports bra on the regular. She's got the body for it though. I always do a double-take and then get jealous and refuse to look at her for the rest of the time. She's the only one I ever see do that though.
  • Not at my gym-gym, but sometimes at the yoga studio I go to.  They are usually extremely well able to pull it off.  And it is warm/hot yoga.  There are some dudes who go shirtless too.
  • At my new gym I don't see it a lot, but at my old gym I used to.  And my response was mostly this:

    imagekat.in.the.hat:

It doesn't make me uncomfortable to see them, just jealous because the girls that do it have awesome bodies (and no fake boobs, or at least that I can tell)

  • Not at my gym, but most of the people there are older.  At my old gym, where looking pretty was more important than working out, women did this all the time.

I will run in a sports bra outside when it's suuuper hot.

  • Of the nearly 20 instructors I teach with I think there are only 2 that wear actual shirts and they are dudes, lol.
  • Not at the gym, but outside for sure.  And not now, but 3 kids ago, sure...along w/ my tight little shorts that I can't fit both legs into at the same time now :)

And I vividly remember captain's practices for high school soccer in the summertime before school started when the entire team would jog by the football practices in our sports bras and we thought we were so cool!

  • I used to do it all the time, when my work out clothes consisted of mainly cotton t shirts.  Now I have tank tops so don't.  I did and still do have the body to pull it off but don't like people staring at me.  I occassionally still run outside in the summer with only a sports bra when it's really hot.  Again, I don't like the attention.
  • My boot camp instructor will sometimes wear just a sports bra and yoga-style pants.  But she's very fit, small-chested, and it looks fine.  I wouldn't like to see an overweight or overly-endowed person do this.

  • I very rarely workout in a shirt.   I think most people here know that, lol.,

But I also very rarely workout in a gym (and when I do, I am in the pool).  However, I do take my shirt off when I do spin class because that little studio room gets HOT. I think its uncomfortable to sweat in a shirt.

I am going to try a yoga class at my gym and if the room gets hot, I will take off my shirt. I dunno, that is how I am comfortable so that is what I do.

However, I barely have boobs so I dont know if I am much of a distraction.  Although my nipples sometimes get hard?

  • There is a girl that used to attend one of my group fitness classes that did this but then suddenly started to leave her shirt on, I have to wonder if someone said something to her because I dont ever see anyone sans shirt at the gyms I go to and i circle between 4 different ones.

  • I work out at a community rec center.  Shirts are required.

However, I run outside and CrossFit in just a sports bra.  My boobs are super sad after nursing two kids though. . . so I don't think it's distracting.
