Which would you choose?

I won an award at work and I get to either choose a cash prize or a trip to one of 4 locations for 7 days (to a set limit). The disadvantage of the cash prize is that I would lose close to 50% in tax (by time I pay to Oz and US govt), but I could do with it what I want. I think London is to far (24 one way fly and layover time) and the US is to, but if they let me tag on leave I can visit family. So which would you choose flying from Oz?

Oh, and if we pay the difference DH might be able to come.

Re: Which would you choose?

  • Is KL Kuala Lumpur?  I don't think there is much to do there unless you visit other places in Malaysia/SE Asia.  If so, it would be my last option...haha.
  • Totally depends how much the cash prize is. If it's enough to finance a trip you'd rather take than any of those options (after taxes are taken out) then I'd pick that. If it's a sum that would just end up being put in the bank or spent on something not very exciting, I'd go to either Tokyo or NY if you can spend time with family.

Yeah that was my concern, but it's close and cheap once your there, I think I could get DHs ticket and a nice hotel in for the limit they've allowed (and maybe have a GTG with a certain nestie..).

Emily the cash would only be enough to take a local short break, and they wouldn't throw in the time off of 7 days like they are for the other options (so really its worth more than the cash).

It's nice to have this sort of "problem" thoughStick out tongue

Oh, Oh! Is that me? Seven days is a lot for KL if you want to see things, but the 5 star hotels here are the cheapest price wise I've seen them anywhere. Also, the food is cheap and abundant. You could always do two or three days in KL and then take an Air Asia flight to one of the islands on the east coast or Borneo for not a lot of money. It's the beginning of the season for the east coast right now so we were able to score a pretty good deal up on Parhentian Island-airfare, airport transfer, ferry, two nights in the preferred resort on the island with breakfast included for $140 USD a person.

Big Smile I would have a certain number of days commitment in KL, but I've always want to go to Borneo....

  • Jetstar flies nonstop to Tokyo, so your H could get a cheaper flight.  Have you been to Japan yet?  You could easily spend a week in Tokyo and surrounding areas.

But, I also like SE Asia (KL plus an air asia flight elsewhere).  When would you be going?

  • So they didn't give me the extra leave, so the NY was too far for 7 days (esp. when I travel 200+ days a year already!). Then we went with Tokyo but now DH can't get time off (he has 20 weeks long service but someone got injured at work and its school holiday time). So I'm going to take the cash and put it in our travel account. Our next big trip is Southern and Eastern Africa 2013 so every little bit helps! Thanks for your advice ladies.
