Do any of you people do Lent?
I think I'm giving up beer this year, in solidarity with both Jesus and my Baby Mama Ojo.
ETA: and my H. I always forget that he's not just partying it up on his vacation.
I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.
Re: Do any of you people do Lent?
Shopping?
A couple years ago I gave up lethargy. I made myself do something active for at least an hour every day. It was pretty good.
You know, I went to Catholic school and never even gave anything up for Lent! lol. I may or may not this year.... I was trying to think of what I'd give up and in order to make it good, I think it'd have to be chocolate or sweets or something... but I really don't know if I can do it;)
Oh WAIT I love the idea of giving up Shopping! When is Lent? Lol. Does it start this Wednesday until Easter? Or something? I planned on giving up shopping for all of March anyway I have shopped WAY too much lately.
I'm going to give up pop and alcohol. I usually just drink wine in the winter (especailly if I'm alone since it doesn't seem as bad), but I know if I just say I'm giving up wine I'll start drinking more beer and vodka. I'm selfishly hoping that giving up both will also act as a kick start to losing weight.
I also think I'm going to try to go to church every Sunday during Lent. I've been meaning to find one to go to here and this is a good reason to start.
Stan I also thought about making myself do something active every day since I've been a ridiculous lazyass for the past couple months. Again, it will help with the losing weight thing too.
I've never been a fan of lethargy even thought I'm a culprit. Maybe I should try this.
I always toss around the idea of alcohol, but I've actually "added' stuff the last few years--Stations of the Cross, rosaries, etc. Not sure what I'll do this year.
No.
But funny story, on of the girls I went to HS with once gave up Brad Pit for Lent. I'm serious. She used to talk about him all the time and so she gave him up. It was a nice break for us!
I fast completely on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, and meatless Fridays, although I confess to forgetting it's Friday and remembering halfway through a Costco hot dog...
Haha, I've done that before!
My mom is annoyed with me because as a part of our saving-money-on-the-trip-to-see-my-H-graduate plan, we agreed to split a $5 footlong from Subway on the drive up on Wednesday. I broke the news to her today that it's gonna have to be a veggie footlong, due to it being Ash Wednesday.
I do meatless Fridays, although it's harder now because my H isn't Catholic, and therefore demands meat for dinner even if I can't have it. I think I'm giving up fried food this year. I considered alcohol, but that's setting myself up for failure.
The first year I converted, I gave up sex. Luckily for me, the three times that I failed all happened to be Sundays, which are "free" days during Lent. So technically, I succeeded. This was before I was married, I still don't know how I convinced my boyfriend then to participate in that with me...
My husband is not Anglican, but if he does not like what I prepare, he fixes his own.
Is there a purpose to giving things up for Lent? Is it kind of like making New Year's resolutions?
For the record I never heard of Lent until high school so it's not that I'm hostile towards the idea, just unfamiliar with the whole thing.
For me, it is absolutely the holiest time of the year, far more so than Christmas, because it is about sacrifice, and service (I swear I'm not trying to make this military related). The Bible says Christ fasted for 40 days and was tempted by Satan in the desert. And then he gave his life on the cross, and whether people believe he was the literal son of God or not, which I do, the fact that he thought he was sacrificing himself on the cross for the sins of humanity would be enough for me to greatly admire him if I did not. Lent is my time to honor that sacrifice from someone who was also just a man.
This
I too will fast completely on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, and meatless Fridays, last year K even went along with it. We'll see if he does it again this year. Stan, I already told you, but I'm giving up swearing. Anyone who knows me, knows this is a big one. I plan on making a "swear jar" so when I do have a slip, I have to put money(or an IOU) in there. I'll probably donate the money or do something with it when Lent is over.
I've never participated in Lent; guess I always thought of it as a Catholic thing. Is my ignorance showing?
I do like your summary though, Stan.
Not sure that there is anything more that I can give up since I've already had to give up so much for these past 8 mos.
The abstinence is Catholic-specific, though the Lenten season is Christian-wide. I'm considering giving up Taco Bell. H asked me how often I really eat it, because isn't it supposed to be something hard to do. His mouth fell open when I told him about once a week....
Awesome; so I'm not too far off my mark. I know that non-Catholics sometimes choose to participate in the abstinence part of Lent (funny to use that word and not have it necessarily refer to sex). I grew up Methodist so it just never really registered with me to do without. I do choose Easter as my most revered "holiday" - it is definitely a day worth remembering.
I actually didn't know that anyone other than Catholic and Greek Orthodox observed it.
Last year our priest told us to try to "improve" something (like the anti-lethargy) rather than give something up.
I think I'm going to try to do both, I've been really lagging this year, hardly ever going to church, etc. I blamed it on being with someone who wasn't enthusiastic about religion, but he's been gone 3 months and I still haven't been going, so it's totally my fault.
So I think I'm giving up fried food and I'm going to commit to going to church weekly.
Wow, Stan. I spent 4+ years studying religion and never heard anyone fully explain the Lenten season so understandably! Thank you!
I've decided I'm giving up soda and sweets, to hopefully jump start my goal of a healthier me; but I will also be adding in a few meditive routines that I've been slacking on: probably prayer journaling and morning adorations. I also like the idea of commiting to attending church; it is about time the hubs and I got back looking for a community of faith to worship with.
I am already seriously thinking about giving up meat in my diet completely, so giving it up for God doesn't seem "holy".
I could do coffee... but... I don't want to.
Facebook? I might die.
TV? I don't mind doing that. But I really love the Voice this season.
Maybe I will just give up procrastinating. It would be healthy for everyone around me. LOL.
Sugar, wheat, and anything sweet. That's right. I'm following a diet of only, fruits, veggies, lean meats, lots of water, cran-water and flax seeds.
Those Girl Scout Cookies in my pantry tempt me every time I open the door. But, I've already lost 3lbs in 2 days so those babies aren't touching my fingertips.
I am still trying to decide what to give up for Lent. DH is Eastern Orthodox, so it's full-on no meat, no dairy, no beer, wine only on weekends. We had the traditional Meatfare Sunday steaks for dinner last night, since today starts the meat fast.
I am leaning towards soda because I drink a lot of soda. But, I gave up coffee last year, so that seems kind of like a cop-out. I also am leaning towards giving up alcohol. Obviously, I'm having a hard time deciding.
Yeah this would not fly in our house. I don't eat much meat but on the weeks I cook mostly veggie by Friday E is begging for a burger or something with some meat in it.
I've done it. And I was an avid carnivore back then.
