Is today religion day?

  • I find all of that :waves hand in ML's general direction: more irritating than I should.

  • Someone on page three claims she gets slammed for being a Christian on the daily. I quit. I dunno, I can understand that the original complaint is kind of a shitty thing to say, but I wonder if these people really get what it feels like to constantly have to hide your beliefs or risk torpedoing your career.

I also wonder how people even know she's Christian. Is it the same person over and over or are strangers coming up to her?

  • You forced me into a roadtrip again. I read it. I was all mildly amused, annoyed and a little wanting to post something all at once. So I decided to just close it before I got myself in trouble. Plus I'm a Seinfeldian Jew at best and I don't need any molotov cocktails thrown through my window if I come down on the wrong side of nestie religious debate.

  • Can someone post a link or the title? I can't think of a single time I've felt persecuted for my Christianity. I sometimes feel the interwebz look down on it but meh, who cares?

That's His#1 I think.  Ridiculous in every way.

Comment for religion day:  my therapist thinks it's important for me to have some spiritual outlet.  She wants me to explore my spirituality I guess?  She said even if it's yoga, that would be better than my current "something but not THAT" state.  I don't know what to do.  My area is not exactly a hotbed of religious diversity.

  • Fallin, here's a link.

I found this one to be more irritating.  It's just a bit over the top, which we know LHC is NEVER prone to.

  • I feel like Lucy can get very defensive about her Catholicism. Floyd seems less so, kind of more relaxed about it, but Lucy is always ready to fight to the death.
  • I love the Christian / catholic martyrdom going on there.  Christians are bashed more than any other religious group? Please.  Do they have any idea the issues minority religious groups face daily?  Christianity may be the focus here because it's the majority position and what most people here have exposure / familiarity to.

I also love how someone suggested nobody picks on atheists.  I'm pretty sure I know several closeted atheists because they know it would create a giant rift in their family/social circles/career.

  • Thanks. Essbe if you're interested in readings, I'd love to make suggestions.

I always marvel how much it irks the living shiit out of people when you say you believe in nothing vs just picking a known "normal" religion and being done with it.

Atheism isn't that shunned here, that I know of- I'm pretty sure it's worse to be Muslim or Jewish but I've been on business trips where if I'd said I don't believe in god at all, I'd have to seriously watch my back.

  • Are they taking about the nest or irl? I admit I think it's more acceptable to be atheist than Christian or Catholic on the boards but again, who cares? That doesn't affect your life.

Oklahoma is most definitely different. Here atheism is pretty much the worst thing you could ever possiby identify with.

Also, bonus birth control discussions in the follow up links. Can someone ?for real) explain to me how the catholic church demands you not take any steps to prevent conception, yet endorses NFP. That's preventing pregnancy and having sex for pleasure only. It's just not using a chemical method to do so.

I think they mean IRL. I disagree with your position on this as well though. I think you're sensitive to any anti-religious sentiment (which does exist from some, but I don't think the majority). I think at the end of the day most people are anti-hatred and bigotry and unfortunately some of the hate groups align themselves with religion.

  • I've created myself this little liberal bubble in Oklahoma, so I don't see much of the religious bigotry I'm sure is out there.

And the BS personhood laws are tied up in religion, as is the teaching creationism bill that died in committee last year but made it through today. HB 1551, for those keeping track.

Anyway, I feel like I'm rambling with a bunch of unconnected thoughts. One more though.

I was every bit as turned off by the athiest group's float in the Halloween parade last year as I would have been a church's that was yelling, "you're all going to hell" or something. They were being very provocative and even somewhat offensive.

ETA: I forgot to add that the atheist float was yelling things like, "We get to sleep in tomorrow, do you?" (it was a Sat night) "There is no God" stuff like that.

  • and I assure you the Catholic church does not think being gay is a sin.

I'd better steer clear of Oklahoma then because I'm not going to lie about believing in nothing. I wonder who had Oklahoma when I worked in tanning. Somehow I missed that whole state and I had to go pretty much everywhere.

Maybe you're only supposed to have sex with NFP when you *think* you're going to conceive. Then people can get off (haha!) on the technicality just being stupid. "OH, only during ovulation! D'oh! We'll try to remember that part!!"

  • WhateverSB. you have choices. Do you want to be Baptist or Carholic?

And there you have where I wanted to chime in.

Well, they're against condoms too. And promote sex for pleasure as a necessary for a happy marriage. And I read somewhere recently where someone in the Church admitted that the Pill is not an abortificant. So all I've got is that they don't like effective birth control.

But most Catholics use it anyway, so whatever.

And yeah, according to national polls anyway, atheist is the worst thing you can be and most people think it means you have no morality. Still I doubt I'll ever face workplace discrimination because there is no way I would ever let an employer or coworker find out. None.

Iirc, His (who generally seems nice fwiw) thinks that not wearing her cross necklace = discrimination. I don't think she should have to hide it, but I don't think it really rises to the level of persecution.

    Yeeeeaaah.

Knowing what I know about the history of the Catholic church, I have a hard time with them being any kind of moral compass whatsoever.

Eh, I think everyone is sensitive when they feel it's directed at them. I could say the same thing about atheists. Generally., I find it unproductive to assume any group is reflective of their worst members.

What do you do for a living?? Everyone knows what I don't believe in because it's on the back of my car in the form of a Darwin fish. And another one that says Gefilte in the middle because I thought it was cute.

Is it weird that I'm bothered about being hated because I'm a Jew yet I'm kind of amused it's so awful to be athiest and I don't give a shiit who knows that I am?

I'm so complex. And of course it's all about me.

  • I walked out of a Catholic mass once when the priest's homily was about teh evil gays.  AND at Catholic youth group I personally heard a priest talk about why the church is so anti-gay. And that's when I decided it wasn't for me anymore.

Floyd is full of shiit with her paraplegic man argument.

Wait. Do most people think a belief in evolution precludes a belief in God, or vice versa? If I believed in bumper stickers and cared about that issue, I'd have a Darwin fish next to a Jesus fish. I believe in clean bumpers more.

I agree with all of this. I just don't think this board is overwhelmingly anti-religious. We just have a few vocal non-religious people.

  • I'm way too lazy to read any of those threads, so feel free to continue sharing the highlights and such.  Enable my laziness.

It's such a shame that Christians are so persecuted.  That's why we'll never have a Christian president.

The head priest of the catholic youth group I was in for 2 years wouldn't let me go on their retreat with all my friends because I was a Jew and there had been no precedent set before. He had the chance to convert me and he blew it. I was really good at the Our Father too.

  • Ha TSD. I was only in the group to begin with because the.cute boys from the all boys school were in it. We did allow non-Catholics, my friend Jackie was Christian Scientist .
