Migraines

Some back story I have had migraines for over ten years. I think I had my first one around the age of 6 or 7 with about 5 a week if I was super lucky maybe 1-3. I have had MRI's and blood tests. All came back negative for anything. The doctors sent me to New Orleans childrens hospital and did everything over again still nothing. They eventually said it was probably stress. I have had times where I didn't have one for months and then wham they were back for awhile. I started having them more often after my brother passed away so I was put on anti anxiety meds and Topamax which helped for about four month that was in April of last year and then I had one every.single.day. I stopped taking all of the meds and after a few weeks the migraines stopped. In October while my brother and his family lived here I started getting 1-2 a week I thought it was stress until after they left. After they left the migraines only got worse I'm talking one a day. I usually can work through them but I couldn't these were severe. Mid January they abruptly stopped. My doctor said that I do not need another MRI because the previous ones were negative. The last one of my head was in 2004. Yesterday I started losing sight in my right eye and having sharp pain my left temple. I normally wouldn't worry as I am used to it in my left eye right before a migraine but after I took my meds it kept getting worse my head kept hurting worse and worse, my whole body hurt, fever, shaking, and upset stomach. I took some excedrin didn't phase it. Finally when P got home he gave me something that knocked me out. I woke up two hours later I still felt some pain but not half as bad. Over about an hour the pain came back more and more P gave me more meds and put me to bed. When I woke up this morning I had some pain along with lightheadedness and dizziness. Should I go to the ER or wait until my doctors appointment next Friday?

Re: Migraines

  • I didn't realize this got so long. Sorry. I probably messed up on spelling. I think I will go to the ER tonight after P gets home. I am also thinking about seeing a different doctor. Has anyone been through this? I am a little scared that something major is wrong. Any advice would help
  • I used to have 4-5 migraines a month.  Some put me in bed for a full day.  Some were very slight but I would litterally be looking through a tunnel of rainbows.  Doc have put me on so many drugs but they only masked them.  Never made them go away.  I started seeing a chiropractor last July.  I saw him once a week for 5 months and now I see him every other week.  I have had 4 migraines total since July.

I totally recomend you try that.  It has been a complete life saver for me.

  • I agree with the Chiropractor suggestion. They are miracle workers, I tell you.

As for going to the ER. That is totally up to you. You know your history, and you know that this migraine is different. Go with your gut. If you think that it will make you feel better sooner, go.

  • I've had horrible migraines since college.  They are usually always either stress related or from lack of caffeine.  Sometimes they are so bad I can't do anything but sleep.

Excedrin tension headache has always helped the most when it comes to meds for me.  But like TX I started going to a chiropractor about a year ago and the headaches stopped.  My neck and back were a complete mess, and I instantly started feeling relief.

If you still are having those symptoms I would call your doctor and explain them all.  I don't know that I would go to the ER, but I'm also not a doctor.

  • I was going to one after my accident in September. I went for about a month everyday because they said it would take a while for it to help but I hurt so bad after I left his office everyday that I cried everytime I moved. I stopped going after he left for a vacation and his temp made it worse then when I started going. I wouldn't be against going again. Really at this point I would do anything to help this pain
  • Ditto the chiro. I get muscle tension headaches/migraines and he adjusts my neck and it has helped SO much.

If it gets to the point you can't see, go to the ER. And ditto Brandi, you know your symtpoms better than us.

I usually hurt afterwards too. Not to the point that I cry but it's like using a muscle that was neglected before.  Make sure to ice the area(I ice my neck) and take some motrin or ibuprofen.

Find a different chiro.  You may be sore the first few times, but it shouldn't be painful.  That accident and that chiro combined may be what set off these migraines.  Ask around and find a good one who specializes in migraines.

  • My doctor told me to drink anything I like with caffine in it. I have completely stopped drinking soda because of all the sugar. I used to drink anywhere from 1-5 day. Worst idea I ever had because they did help a lot. I drink coffee every morning and sometimes at night. I drink tea all day. I need more caffine but I don't know how to get it without drinking alot of soda or coffee. After I stopped the soda a few months ago all the sugar makes my stomach hurt and honestly I would rather my stomach hurt then feel like my head is being smashed and about to explode

Ditto.  When I first started going I had to ice my back and neck after.  You are moving your spine and nerves in a way that they haven't been moved in a long time, and as with anything that hasn't been used in a while you're going to be sore after.  The horrible pain could have been a combination of the accident too, but if you were crying in pain I would find a different chiro.

Exedrine Migraine has caffine in it.  Out of all the Rx I've tried, that is the only med that gives me any relief when I do get a migraine.

    Wait, wait, wait.

He told you to drink MORE caffeine? I understand headaches when you quit cold turkey but you should not need to over compensate with more caffeine. They only recommend 200-300 mg a day(2 - 4 cups of coffee). If anything, if you're drinking all tea and coffee, I'd bet money you're dehydrated as all get out and your body wants water.

Excedrin Tension also has caffeine.  Have you tried any excedrin products?  I personally have only tried the tension because the commercial for it exactly described my headaches (up the back of my neck and head), and it works great so I never switched.

For additional caffeine you can try drinking tea, either hot or cold.  Obviously you would need unsweetened iced tea if you don't want a lot of sugar.  I like keeping the Starbucks double shot espresso cans around too, but those aren't cheap.

  • Are you seeing a neurologist and did they prescribe an abortive drug for your migraines?  I used to take Maxalt-mlt but I can't breastfeed while taking it so I'm now on Imitrex and Topomax.  I would put a call in to your dr and see if they recommend anything while you're waiting for your next appt.  I'm photosensitive with my migraines so going to the ER would be torture.

Your doctor. Google. The base clinic. Be aware that chiro will be an out of pocket expense though.

Why don't you know a single person? What about P's friend that was going to live with you? You really should get out and meet some people.

  • dnbeach - we're headache twins. lol. Those are what I get, they're awful. Luckily, my chiro is awesome and a few mins from work so if I get one, I call and he can generally squeeze me in fairly soon. Plus, he's a looker, so that helps. ;)

  • Put down the tea and drink some water.  Since you have a headache, I would recomend not drinking water with ice in it.  Just room temp or slightly cool.  Like BLT said, you are more than likely dehydrated which will make your migraines worse.

  • I may be dehydrated. I am drinking more water then I used to and trying to drink more. I am very thirsty lately. I usually take the excedrin migraine if my Esgic and Phenergan (which usually it does) doesn't work or if it is just a mild one and it does help. However last night it didn't phase it one single bit. I wish I knew why nothing was helping last night

If you're thirsty, chances are you're dehydrated. You should drink it before you get thirsty. I have a giant cup from subway with a straw that I fill with ice in the morning, I make sure I drink it by lunch and then refill it. Try to set some goals like that.

  • That is a good idea for setting a goal for drinking more water. I am going to do that I have that big subway cup with the straw that I usually keep tea in but can easily be changed for water. As for the more caffine thing I just don't see why he wants be to drink more. I usually have two cups of coffee and 4-6 8oz. glasses of tea a day. Now I am squeezing in 2-4 bottles of water. I tried the coffee shots and monters I get jittery and look like a tweaker lol so those are out

Haha, not something I wish anyone had to share though.

However, I would totally go to my chiro alllll the time if I went to your place.  Mine in WA was an older guy, but his hands were like the size of my head which was a chiro-turn on.  I had to stop going when it was getting so expensive, but it definitely helped.  I wish Tri-Care would cover a chiro, but hopefully I can start teaching soon and get additional insurance that will cover it.

You need to replace most of those glasses of tea with water.  That could be a huge issue.  People who drink large amounts of tea and coffee have enormous risks of kidney stones.  I drink 2 cups of coffee every morning.  I have reduced every thing else I drink except water to only meal times.  If you aren't eating lunch or dinner, don't drink anything but water. Doing that has greatly increases my water intake.  I also have a goal to drink at least 3 nalgene bottles of water every day.  Sometimes, I add a slice or two of lemon or orange to it to add some flavor.

  • Having a chiropractic adjustment every day for a month straight is an awful idea.  The adjustment only begins in the office.  Your body needs a couple days (minimum) to react to the adjustment.  They're not just moving bones.  Those bones are surrounded by muscle and ligament that need time to move too.  I would steer clear of any chiropractor who wants to see you more than twice a week in the beginning.

There are different methods of chiropractic care and individual chiropractors vary based on what college they went to.  I personally prefer a Gonstead method since that is what is familiar to me.  My sister prefers a doctor who incorporates more massage and less actual joint movement.  I tried three chiropractors here before I found one I liked, then actually started seeing a new one who incorporates acupuncture.  I highly recommend acupuncture.

Do you exercise?  Our bodies function better when we pump oxygen through them and the best way to do that is to get your heart rate up.
