Re: does your SO show up to your races? (clicky poll)

  • It definitely depends on the race. ?The only one I've ever told him I needed him for was my marathon. ?Other than that, if he can come, great, if not, it's not a big deal.
  • It depends on the event.  He's been to 1-10K, 2 marathons and 1 half marathon.

  • It depends. Some of the time he is running them too, so he's there of course.

He came to my last 10K, but that is b/c my friend bagged and it was an hour away and he knew I was being an Eeyore about it. He's been to 2 of my half marathons, the third was 2 hours away and I ran with a friend last minute, and we were staying with her parents so he didn't come to that one.

I like when he comes, but I don't expect it. I won't throw a hissy if he doesn't.

  • I'm a Special Snowflake because DH and I run all our races together. We've only been running for about 18 mos., but did 12 races last year and one so far this year - we usually plan them together.  He got hurt and couldn't do the November and December races, but he came with me.  I can't imagine him not coming and vice versa, but this may change with time and frequency.
  • Depends on his work/school/volunteer schedule.  If he's available, he will come.

Of course, now that he's running more races, he's there because he's running too!

  • From Nov-April my H works almost all weekends so he never makes it to my local small races.  In the spring, summer, and fall though he generally comes to all of them.
  • I've only done one race, but DH was home with the kids. I have a bunch of races on the calendar in the upcoming months, & I think he'll be able to make it to one. Races are typically early in the morning & logistically challenging. I don't want to be worried about him trying to entertain the kids or me feeling pressure to be somewhere at a certain time.
  • I voted he never comes, but he actually did come once (good thing, too, because my bike had problems and he's a handy guy).  And we have a local race that goes right by our door, so he and the kids stand on the curb and cheer, so I guess that kinda sorta counts.
  • Where is the NO option? I voted special snowflake.

DH came to my first 3 or 4 5ks, he's been to one half & one 10k. He hasn't been to a race in almost a year.. I race with my running group, or a friend, or my Mom & I get a hotel and make a weekend of it..so I don't mind that he's not there. His idea of a good time isn't standing around and waiting for me to cross the finish line, I don't blame him. Running isn't his thing, it's mine.   He is supportive in that he "lets" me race anytime I want to. I'm racing 4 wknds in a row & he didn't bat an eye when I told him.

  • DH comes to all of my races. Normally I choose my bigger races as out of town events, so it's like a mini vacation for us (hotel/stay with friends, good food, etc). Plus he's the bestest running widower ever.

  • We do a lot of races together.  But if one of us isn't racing we try to watch each other depending on where/when it is.

He missed a few 5ks I did in Jersey when he was living in NYC, and I didn't make it to a few halfs he's done.

We've been trying to do this more lately, so it's fun for him also.?

  • The other factor that I forgot to mention was that aside from my long runs, he is out in the neighborhood/at the gym with me for every.single.training.workout. So it's like, he's invested all this time and patience watching me on the dreadmill/loop the track 400000 times, he may as well witness the end result too Big Smile

  • He works most weekends, and during the fall he's hunting every weekend he isn't at work.

But if he's not doing one of those two things, then he's there with the kids.

    image
  • unless he's running too he doesn't come. I don't really care.  I kind of like being on my own on race day.  then there's no one setting the schedule except me.

  • As of now he's missed 2 out of the 16 I've done, but both were for work-related reasons. I don't force him to come to any, he wants to be there if he can to support me. He volunteered for my biggest race that I did back in October as well and loves to help out. I think I'd be kinda upset if he missed the big ones that I'm actually training for, though. But we've planned the schedule around it so he can be there.

  • God love my DH, but I honestly prefer him not to come sometimes.  If it's a larger race, he hates large crowds, and whenever he does come to one, it seems like it rains every.single.time and he just ends up being a grump.  So, most times it's best not to have him there b/c he's a downer!

Now he has come to a couple ones where my dad came as well, and these were good b/c then at least he had someone to talk to and share in the misery of the rain ;)

  • 1.  We both run the race

    2. I run, he stays home w/ the kids.

    or

    3. I run, he brings the kids and everyone cheers me on.

I like #3 the best but if the weather isn't great or the race interferes w/ meals or nap times, he stays home.

I'm at the point where I could forbid my dad to come to any of my races. The two he's been at have been crummy weather, and he's been the one with the prissy schedule/cranky attitude and I've had sucky performances with him nearby.

  • I love your siggy pic! Such cuteness!

My DH has made it to all my marathons, but skips the smaller races. We have 2 5k's we run together every year, and this Spring we are running a half together (well, sort of together. I plan to smoke him, haha)

  • Mine has come to every half or full I have done (except for one, he was traveling), he comes to most other races too, even though I tell him he does not need to for the smaller ones.

We call him my Sherpa, he carries a bag of stuff I may need and takes my extra layers.  Every race is an adventure for him to see how many times he can see me on the course (even for NWM in San Francisco, he did it via public transportation, I was amazed at his success).  He always drops me off, so I don't have to deal with parking or arriving early and standing in the cold.

However, he is never at the finish line.  He does not like the crowd or dealing with parking, so he waits for me in the car near by and picks me up when I'm ready.

  • usually, he comes.  i'm okay with it if he can't come, so long as there is someone else there that i know.  more than anything, i worry about safety issues...like if something were to happen and i was injured, i would want a familiar face available.

    2012 Races:

Those were only because they were out of town and came along for the ride.

Like one of your options said, it's just how we roll.

DH does this too, except he's always at the finish line and doesn't hop around on the course. He positions himself in the best place when I'm in the corral so he can cheer me on to the finish line.

  • When I race DH and I typically race together.  However, he does lots of races that I don?t attend.  We calculated that he raced about every other weekend last year.  I will watch the larger races if I am not racing with him, but the smaller ones I sleep through.  We have only raced together twice in the four years we have been together and those were huge races where DH was stuck in a back corral with me.

  • So far every race I have done and the races I have planned, he has done or is doing right along with me! So I guess the answer is yes, but not in the capacity meant by the question...

  • It really depends. Running races he likes to watch because there are a lot more people. I can't imagine him sitting for 3-4 hours to see me swim.
I swim because I'm too damned sexy for a sport that requires real clothing.
