    same.

  • I hadn't heard of him before. I shared the link and plan to tell people about him, etc.

I can't imagine living life like those children.

Anyway, feel free to FB me if you have questions or want contacts or whatever. :)

  • I've heard of Invisible Children but thank you for posting this video. As Tx said, I shared it and will continue to do so! So moving. I am still watching it and in tears.

  • Someone on my fb just posted this and I had to unsubscribe from their feed before I went apeshiit. He is married to a cousin of mine, they have two children. It is just really, really sad to hear this kind of attitude.

This whole KONY talk is getting ridiculous. You really think donating your money to another agent of war is going to solve problems? All you know is a name, and a name solves nothing. Individuals are powerful, but not as powerful as masses. You have to let cultures grow up themselves, with their own self enlightenment and evolution. I sometimes just wish Americans would mind their own business.

?...There?s also something inherently misleading, naive, maybe even dangerous, about the idea of rescuing children or saving of Africa. [?] It hints uncomfortably of the White Man?s Burden. Worse, sometimes it does more than hint. The savior attitude is pervasive in advocacy, and it inevitably shapes programming. Usually misconceived programming.? -- Chris Blattman

Not to mention, idiot, that THEY CAN'T GROW UP THEMSELVES.

They're kidnapped out of their homes as children and programmed to kill others, or to be used as sex slaves.

I'm really angry right now. I can't even form another coherent sentence about it.

How can someone at least know what's happening, and not care?

This is the problem I ran into. I tried to respond 2x and he had a whole bunch of BS to spout off and I was like ok *** you drop it then, for the fam sake.

I just don't understand. He's so condescending. He's all "Anarchy, Right now" too so we get into it on the reg.

This was the last response after I said I didn't want to engage further.

Go look up the financials of each 501(c)(3) in question.. it's public data, and if you want to point fingers, it's the non-profits that are trying to "help" that are disappointing. I didn't believe in IC BEFORE all this hype back when my bu...ddy Alex was showing me their videos 5 years ago. I pick and choose carefully the soil I put my seed, and while it is sad to see children exploited, there are bigger problems we have to deal with and more fertile crops in which we can invest our time and money. Our hearts are the same, Kristen, just not our logic and actions.

    Latest:

Here's exactly what I think is ridiculous.. not the cause, not the children, not even foreign vs domestic issues. The problem is capitalism and the use of viral components like Facebook, videos, and other media to draw attention to someone ...who is a low level criminal. The solution is not massive video of Facebook hype. The problem is getting teary eyed, buying a bracelet and paying the wages of an organization that talks about doing more than they actually do. Invisible Children is making a NAME known to the world. A name that should not have been known, a name that should've ended in the silent of the night by a single assassin that will not create a war, or hype around a cause. We are doing more harm than good by policing and using Facebook to stir emotions.   There is NO reasoning with him, I posted info, tried to discuss, etc and it wasn't doing anything but making me more upset. He is condescending about every public issue anyone supports, is all anarchy and Americans are stupid and yada yada. His motherfuucking name was already known by all of these children who have been terrified, murdered, tortured, forced to do unspeakable things. He's suggesting that giving it publicity is giving him credibility, WTMF? Umm no. You are a moron. I want to delete him but every time I do I get 40 messages from family members about how rude I AM and then a friend request from him. So, I've just hid him so that I don't have to see his idiocy.

I have so many things I want to say about this, but not enough time to do it in. I think that what they (Invisible Children) are trying to do is great, but there is something that I am not fully jiving with concerning this video, like something big is missing. Perhaps you all could enlighten me a little.

And yes, I watched the whole video.

The first article, I'm not a fan of. It makes a lot of assumptions about the whole thing.

I'm currently reading the Crisis Group report from the second article right now.

But, what isn't jiving with you?

Quite honestly? His rhetoric bugs me. Maybe because this is targeted to teenagers who will take this at face value, I really need to look at it closer, but he offers no solutions except for "spread the word" which is all well and good, but then what? It is too simple. However, if his only goal was to get this guys name out, it's worked. I woke up this morning not knowing "Joseph Kony" now I do.

  • From the first article:

"Incredibly, there is no mention in the film or the campaign that northern Ugandans are currently enjoying the longest period of peace since the conflict began in 1986. Virtually every single northern Ugandan I spoke to during my own field research believes that there is peace in the region. While sporadic violence continues, particularly as a result of bitter land disputes, there have been no LRA attacks in years. "

Warrants have been issued by the ICC. He's moved onto other areas. I don't specifically remember if the video answered it but a basic google search will tell you that he is no longer believed to be in Uganda (I believe this was discussed in the video) so yeah, makes sense that there haven't been attacks. However, this still happened. He still needs to be found and brought to justice.

  • Maybe it makes me ignorant but I just don't understand the harm in getting the word out there. People seem upset that it this particular video is too "simple". They are bringing awareness to something, how is that bad?

Brandie, I highly, highly encourage reading Samantha Powers's book A Problem From Hell: America and the Age of Genocide. Also Romeo Dallaire's book Shake Hands with the Devil, though it's a pretty tough read.

President Clinton did nothing in Rwanda. 800,000 people were murdered in 100 days, most with machetes, and we had the power to stop it and did nothing. Why? Because the AP wire wasn't humming with stories, and when it did, they were buried on page 28 of the New York Times. President Clinton knew. He and Secretary General Ghali were getting wires from General Dallaire every single day about what was going on. But Boutros Boutros Ghali wasn't getting member countries demanding action, and Clinton wasn't getting publicly shamed for doing nothing. Clinton was the most political president ever. If it had the tiniest bit of public support, he would have done something. Simply spreading the word can be HUGE in terms of getting awareness which translates to governmental intervention. Government is how we achieve things like this, and letting them know we know and care is how things get done.

I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.

You always say things perfectly. That last sentence is what this movement of spreading the word and getting his "face" and the issue out there comes down to, I think. If more people know, more people will demand the issue be dealt with swiftly.

Making noise and getting his name out there is basically all the movement is about.  Nowhere in the video does he encourage or ask anyone to hop on a plane to Uganda and wield a gun as they try to hunt the guy down.  He says repeatedly how government won't do anything until many citizens complain about it.  One politician said in the video that if a politician's office takes 25 calls about the same topic, it is brought to their attention and addressed.  So if this movement causes hundreds of people to call then even more attention will be paid by government.  So I don't think the video really needs to state anything else or accomplish anything else since clearly word is getting around very quickly.

  • Thanks for the book recs, Stan. I will have to take a look at them.

I do want to say that I don't think raising awareness is bad. And the video does a good job of doing just that. Nor do I think that getting our politicans involved is a bad thing either. If lives are saved, it is never a bad thing.

I just felt that the video was odd, and I am just trying to wrap my head around why I feel that way. Perhaps, really, it's because I know absolutely nothing about what is actually going on and I never trust the first thing I hear, not anymore anyway. I am not even sure about the response blogs that I've posted. However, I do want to know more and all I can do is research for myself.
