Adventures in the weight room

I used to be fairly regular on this board but I fell off the H&F wagon due to a job change. BF and I are now getting back into working out.

Last night we went to his gym (which is a national chain) to work out. I used to LOVE to lift so last night I wandered over to the free weights. When we were in the car on the way home, BF told me that he almost stopped doing cardio to come over to the free weight section to talk with some of the guys who were lifting near me because they were making fun of me. He was a little upset about it. I honestly didn't even notice because I was concentrating on my form. I said while I appreciated his "protection", I didn't need it because A) I really don't care and B) I have just as much of a right to be lifting as the guys do.

It got me thinking if this happens to other women on this board. So, anyone ever notice this? If so, what do you do? Ignore it or say something?

  • I've never seen that happen. I would probably have a few words to someone who was doing that. Seriously? They can gofuck themselves.

  • I've never noticed that either, but I tend to do my strength training in my gym's stretching/mat area and not in the free weights area. I am usually too absorbed in what I am doing to notice anyone else.

  • No one has ever made fun of me at the gym (that I know of) and I have never seen anyone else get made fun of either.  Good for you for not worrying about it!   Women use free weights all the time, they aren't just for the boys!!

I honestly didn't even notice because when I work out, I work out. I don't pay attention to other people. The funny thing is, this gym's whole motto is that "we don't judge" and "everyone belongs here". LOL

  • Making fun of you for what?  Just being in the free weight room?  If that's the case then F them.  Next time make fun of those meatheads and their (presumably) terrible form!

  • I've never seen this happen either.  I would just ignore it.  My guess is that they were probably intimidated by a woman being on their "turf" so to speak.  My guess is that they probably don't see women in that area very often.  In my gym its not the case as there are several women body builders that are in that area and make what the men are lifting look like childs play.

  • I've never seen it happen either.  I agree, F them.

No they were definitely making fun. I haven't been lifting in months so I was lifting light weights.
