@ hospital bag for baby

I feel dumb asking this since this is our third girl but our girls have all gone to NICU. It is looking like I may make it full term or near full term where baby girl will come home with us. Besides a car seat, what do I need to bring to the hospital for her? Just a change of clothes?

Re: @ hospital bag for baby

  • We brought going home clothes and a receiving blanket. That was pretty much it, save for the car seat and the car seat cover (one of those shower cap style ones).

  • Forget the long list of random shiit you'll find online. Socks, underwear, pj's, change of clothes (but really, you could just wear what you wore in) and toiletries (toothpaste, toothbrush, makeup if you care), phone and charger, bottle of water if you have it. My first pregnancy, I had a whole bunch of stuff packed that I didn't touch. This time, was a very early surprise, so I just threw those few things in a backpack, while in labor, and that was it.

  • How far away are you from the hospital? If you are close all you will really need is a going home outfit for her, a blanket, and a carseat. It might also be a good idea to bring an empty bag for anything like formula or diapers you are given.

My hospital is at least an hour away and with both boys I had to stop on the way home to pick up pain meds. I needed a stocked diaper bag since I had to do a feeding and changing on the way home.

  • For baby I brought a a nice swaddle blanket and a crocheted hat I made for pictures, and a going home outfit.  The only other kid thing I got was a little present to give my older kid (from baby).

  • Thanks everyone. As for distance from hospital, we are 15 minutes down the highway.
  • For the baby, a change of clothes and a light blanket.
A big old middle finger to you, stupid Nest.
  • If you plan to use a pacifier, you'll want to bring the brand you like.

  • I'm bringing a couple of those gown sleepers and a coming home outfit (well 2 b/c I don't know if it's a boy or girl).  That's it.  But, I'm having a c/s and will be there awhile.  If it was a vaginal delivery, I probably would just bring a coming home outfit.

  • I would bring a nail file too, the nurses won't do it for you ime.

  • I brought a boppy pillow, which was helpful.

Make sure you have a newborn-sized outfit, or else you'll be the dumb parents trying to get their 7 pound baby in a 3-month outfit.  Not that I know anyone that did that.  I also don't know anyone who listened to everyone when they said not to buy newborn clothes because they are always to small, whose MIL then had to go out and buy pajamas that fit the baby.

I second the extra bag.  We went home with lots of diapers, pacifiers, and formula, and the extra bag I had came in handy.

  • We also brought an extra bag for hospital swag.  You know, diapers, formula, pacifiers, free nose cleaners - all the good stuff!  We may or may not have swiped so much free stuff from the hospital that we couldn't fit it in the suitcase.  :)

I DIDN'T GET ANY HOSPITAL SWAG!! I got like five diapers, a travel sized pack of wipes, a pacifier, and a cheapie thermometer.

I didn't buy newborn clothes either and had to buy a pack of jammies and some onesies but knowing my luck, if I had bought newborn clothes, he would have been some big beast of a baby. lol

  • Elastic-bottomed gowns, a blanket, gentle unscented wipes (for that first meconium poop. Our hospital didn't have wipes, but we needed the little sample pack I brought), going home outfit, a small toy (for pictures. I still have the little stuffed kitty that was in my hospital bassinet).

Thanks, Pesca. I have to admit I am more nervous thinking about actually bringing a baby home when I get discharged vs. thinking about another NICU stay.

My 1st was 8#4oz, and never wore NB size (and we didn't have any).  According to measurements, my 2nd was supposed to be a similar size.  Imagine my surprise when all 6#11oz of her is swimming in the one 0-3mos outfit I brought.  Luckily, all of our visitors brought clothing presents- sized NB, so we were good. My mom also went out and stocked up on NB sized clothing before I was discharged.  The little peanut wore NB for 3 months.

I can understand that. We were just talking about that the other night, what it will be like if we have another. You mean I have to clean meconium?! ;)

  • I used this list: (sorry not clicky)

     http://www.newparent.com/pregnancy/what-to-pack-for-the-hospital/

and it was pretty helpful. One thing it has they the others didn't is a large envelope for all the paperwork, of which you'll get a ton.
