Obama oil release from reserves

Political move by Obama?

Real help for high gas pricess?

My guess - this is pure politics due to his low poll ratings on gas prices. It will only be a temporary downward  blip, does not solve the problem, puts our national security at risk (think Israel attacking Iran) and will cost big $$ to replace the oil for future reserve needs).   Sounds desperate to me.

Re: Obama oil release from reserves

  • you make no sense.

if he doesn't release from the reserves he's a jerk for keeping prices high but if he does release from the reserves, he's a jerk for causing the next world war.

I agree it's completely political, it's pretty apparent that if gas prices didn't impact economic recovery (and the election), Obama would be content with high prices (Secretary Chu's slip-ups in his testimony). The administration is all about green and alternative energy. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it - we need to be heading there - but it won't happen overnight and you can't force it by hoping energy prices spike people into it. These things are disruptive innovations, but not yet at the point where demand has spurred the investment and innovation necessary to make them affordable (or desirable). That can't be forced.

That said, as far as the Oil releases, Bush did the same thing when prices spiked. They did come down for a while. Of course it's only temporary - it adds to supply, but it doesn't help with demand or speculation - the speculation part is partly based on Iran (and they have better quality Oil for gassoline than other middle-eastern countries to begin with). I really think Obama fears the backlash from the pipeline nonsense in combination with gasoline prices more than just gasoline prices.

I don't really see how this puts our national security at risk - what do you mean - that we would have lower reserves during an attack? Obviously this move has nothing to do with an actual attack. I don't like Obama's energy policy at all, but as long as we're going to crucify him for it - there are really only two things he can do - release reserves and allow the permits for more drilling (on public land). I realize production has gone up - but not from anything he has done, it's decreased on federal property and increased on private - he doesn't have much to do with that. Political or not, it was a smart leadership decision. He can't just do nothing.

I'm shocked at your guess, just SHOCKED.

    Yes

It's taken him this long to come up with a "solution" since blaimg Dubya is no longer an option.

  • How about to prove a point.... he has no control over the price of gas. Gas will still be $3.69/ga next Tuesday.
  • Wait, how does releasing gas reserves put our national security at risk by starting a war?
  • This is what I don't get - Americans pay less for gas (petrol/fuel) than most other Western nations. You have a bunch of people who don't want big govervenment involved, who want free trade and who rah rah capitalisim, yet you want to keep oil for Americans. Which means big government gets involved as the op states, that your restricting free trade and your not selling to the highest bidder as per capitilism. I would LOVE the arab nations to stop supplying oil to the US and see how that goes....oh, but that's right it only works one way...

Lucky.  It's nearly a dollar more here.  Plus, it's intimately tied to our electricity costs, so I can expect that bill to be going up, too.  Still, I don't blame Obama.  Nor do I want keystone pipeline.
