Re: What's YOUR Occupation?
I'll start.
Currently I am working PT as an Admin. Once we PCS I'll be a FT SAHM. Counting down the days....!
I changed my name
Everything. I work for a small private doctors office and do everything from office manager, billing/coding, medical assistant to personal assistant. I love the doctor I work for. His wife is also a physician and has an office next door.
I wanted to go to med school, but I can't commit the time it takes. I've changed that path to getting a BSN and eventually becoming an ARNP. I've also toyed with the idea of joining the AF after getting my BSN. We shall see what happens.
I quit my contracting job a few months ago to finish my MBA. I am taking my classes online so I can SAH with my 18 month old daughter. Prior to this I was ADAF for 9 years and a contractor for 2.
Computer Engineer. I WAH, mostly because when I'm in the office, most of my work is phone/computer based, and when I'm not in the office, one airport is pretty much just as good as another. I worked in the office for this company prior to marrying DH and moving around to multiple states with him. Now my responsibilities involve technical training and overseeing several projects that are ongoing for my company.
One of our spare rooms is set up as a home office. I travel somewhere around 1/4 ish of my time (the last couple years have been slow... in busy years it can top 1/3 or more). DH has become used to excusing my absences from unit activities as "her work has her in xyz place this week... sorry she can't make it." For some reason, many of them seem to happen when I'm out of town.
At least it means I earn airmiles...
Whoo-hoo! I'm not the only engineer on here.
(although, I only have a lowly BS, not a Master's)
Have you been able to transfer your job when you have moved around? It seems to be pretty difficult to do this as an engineer... And places seem reluctant to hire military spouses for engineering positions because of the ramp up time and instability of locale for us. At least, that has been my experience.
I have 2 Bachelors, 1 in Criminal Justice and another in Sociology. I'm a licensed Peace Office in my home state. I've worked in various aspects of Law Enforcement (from registering Predatory Offenders to analyzing crime patterns and everything in between).
Currently, I work in a Jail. Not ideal whatsoever.
We just got married less than a year ago, so I've never moved with my job in the military.
I am staying at my current place until I get a
new position, which I honestly think will be awhile. I kind of figured
it'd be more challenging for me to find something though, so I'm just
trying to stay patient.
SAHM.
Before that I was an office manager in an accounting firm.
ETA: B.A. in Antiquities, minors in Native American Studies, Anthro and Religious Studies.
My DH's civie job is as a sheriff deputy and works in a jail and wants desperately to get out of there. I do not envy you your current work environment.
As long as I can remember, I thought I would never (cue Justin Bieber's Never Say Never lol) work in a Jail or Prison. But here I am since patrol position are few and far between and no department wants someone that will have to move every few years. Part of me wishes I wasn't so responsible so I could quit but I just don't have the balls right now.
It is so ridiculously political in the jails; K would've loved to be in more of a patrol position as well but apparently they like him right where he is. :::sigh::: We would also just love for him to be in a M-F 8-5 kind of job instead of this rotating schedule/shift. Jobs are scarce though for someone who doesn't have a college degree and isn't interested in doing helicopter repair (really basic description of his MOS with ARNG).
Oh, sadness.
I was hoping to hear an awesome success story.
I tried looking for another position after our first PCS. No one would touch me. I had a couple great phone interviews with centralized HR for a company, and would be told that my resume was being forwarded to the hiring manager, and I would never hear anything more. Followups would be met with a basic "it was sent on, but the hiring manager must have preferred another candidate". My guess - the local hiring manager saw the address on base, and tossed my resume.
Because, let's face it, as an engineer, I'm not making the company money for at least a year or so after I start. There's so much to learn with each position - learning that company's protocols, projects, etc. I can't blame a hiring manager for not wanting to deal with me.
I do still hold out hope I can find a different position that has less travel. Right now, we're thinking of TTC, but I'm still not sure how we would make caring for a baby work if I'm on the road for work, and DH has something going on for work. (or, heck, they end up sending him to Korea for a year like they're talking about now) Sadly, it looks like I may end up giving up engineering if we have kids.
I do have the added limitation of not being able to work on base (I'm a foreign national, which would make it a pain for them to get me the clearance I'd need to do work in my field), so many of the contracting companies and such aren't really an option for me. They might be willing to be a bit more flexible with a military spouse than a conventional company.
I'm a high school English teacher, and am currently working on a Master's in English Literature that will enable me to teach at the community college level. I love secondary education and don't see myself leaving voluntarily anytime soon, but the reality is that I need to make myself as marketable as possible for our next PCS.

Good luck with all your stuff and TTC and everything. I know we'll run into a lot of the same challenges.
I have the problem that I cannot seem to pass my FE Exam. I have taken it several times, and most engineering firms won't touch me without it. I really love transportation and want to do it for a long time, so I may try to find work with a transit place just so I can get in the state and retest.
DH told me that we'll probably be in New Jersey for awhile since they're always short handed in his career field, so I'm hoping I have that to offer a company, and right now I'm applying with an address in Cheyenne, so hopefully that throws some people off too. *Crosses fingers*
psssst... Even with a degree it's hard.
Rotating shifts sucks. At my last job the shifts (1st, 2nd 3rd) rotated yearly (seniority got first pick), with 4 days on 3 days off. Here you are on your shift until someone leaves/there is an opening.
I'm an unemployed pharmacist. I left my job a couple weeks ago because we're going to PCS before I'd be back from maternity leave. I was really sad because I doubt I will ever find a job as ideal as this one. It was a fairly new grocery store, we had 4-5 pharmacists working everyday (as opposed to 1-2 in most pharmacies), and we were on an every 6th weekend rotation (typically every other or every third).
We're moving to a town of 20,000, so I'm not sure what kind of job I'll be able to find there. I plan to take at least 6 months off to get settled and get licensed in our new state. Maybe I'll get lucky and they'll have an opening at the base pharmacy. I was previously AD. While I hated my job with a passion, I would go back as a civilian in a heartbeat.
The Dogs and Us
I have my BA in psychology and currently work as an ABA therapist, working with children with autism spectrum disorders. It's ok for now, but I'd like to go on and get my MSW and do school social work, maybe..we'll see. I'll at least be with this job until we PCS next summer.
