I need to ask a Mormon a (dumb) question

My H and I went to Auburn University's gymnastics meet last night, which happened to be against BYU, and I thought of a really stupid question.

How does Mormonism reconcile their feelings about modesty with things like gymnastics, and swimming/diving, where girls are wearing leotard and Speedos? Does the sanctioned uniform for the sport trump the modesty standard in that case?

Re: I need to ask a Mormon a (dumb) question

  • Not a mormon, but I know a LOT of them and have seldom encountered mormons who are the long prairie dress variety.  In other words, my experience is that the rank and file aren't so prohibitively modest that standard athletic clothing is an issue.

  • Not a Mormon, but I've had long conversations with a classmate about it.  Well, mostly we were at a bar, and she talked while other people peppered her with questions.  I just drank :)

Anyway, according to her, the modesty basically just means covering up your magic jammies.  So, she wouldn't wear a low cut top, but she would wear sleeveless.  She said that the exceptions for wearing the jammies were the 4 S's.  Sex, sleep, swimming, sports IIRC.  So, a bathing suit would be fine as would a leotard.

I'll agree with this assessment, but I don't know if that's what would have been happening here. BYU has a fairly strict dress code (doesn't anyone remember the girl with the whorish skirt from a few weeks ago?), so I'm not sure how they reconcile leotards and short skirts with that dress code...

I thought about that article the other night watching BYU Men's basketball play in March Madness. They repeatedly showed the BYU cheerleaders in their very short skirts.
  • Hmmm, based on googling, they justify violating the dress code for safety and competitiveness.  I can see how you can't safely tumble in a prairie skirt.  And if you're in a knee length skirt at a cheerleading competition, you probably won't win.

That's exactly why I was asking.  I was telling my husband about the letter and the 'whorish' skirt, and wondering how BYU's dress code/modesty standard reconciled itself with the gymnasts.

Because for any guys that go the a BYU gym meet, they're going to see a whole lot of thigh - so how does that become ok?  Or do the gymnasts come home to letters?

  • It's a hot-button google issue.  Just google byu dress code cheerleaders, and you'll see lots of opinion letters, many of them hosted on byu's site.

One of them mentioned how the mormon prophet goes to the football games, watching from his luxury suite, not at all bothered by the girls on the field Smile

One guy who auditioned for sytycd got counseling for his choice of audition outfit when he came back home, but apparently it's ok if you're part of a school team.

  • I was raised Mormon, but haven't practiced since I was 25.  I was taught that it's OK to be 'immodest' during sporting events, if it's the typical uniform for the activity, and then change quickly afterwards.

So yes, sanctioned uniforms for sports would trump the modesty standard.
