Obama signs Executive Order allowing for control over all US resources
Re: Obama signs Executive Order allowing for control over all US resources
the fact that it was passed on a friday alone says something... that's for sure.
it can also suggest a larger war is coming... if you are one to think that way (many are)...
the govn't can use this (without a formal declaration of war) and control ALL means of life... private purchases, food, rationing, etc... That doesn't bother you? No matter what side you are on- that should concern you when govn't can just take it all over... and decide who gets what.
interesting also, in that this is a document specifically designed to give the president this power... which is a war time type document.... so- what does he have in mind?
it's not something totally new in history- but brings about a basic suspension of the constitution.... which alone is "interesting"... When used in the past - in the case of Lincoln and Wilson - it was only when they died that the constitution was reinstated.
things are accelorating with Iran/Israel- so you have to wonder what Obama is expecting this need for...
A president can go to war without this - obviously - so this is a "bonus" power for the office of the president.
disclaimer: I haven't read it yet, so I'm basing this opinion solely based on what Goldie has posted..
But I can see where if Bush had done this, people would have flipped the eff out.
That document just glazed my eyes over, but I think she may be referring to Section VIII General Provisions. It appears that that list is not refering to National Defense or considerations during war time.
I'll wait to make a judgment call overall but if this is an overreach by Obama, no surprises there.
Exactly.
Makes me think he expects another terrorist attack on US soil.
Ok, I would be quite concerned as an American, wether you love Obama or not. Thats a pretty hefty Executive Order - and I highly doubt that if it had been Bush or Reagan people would be so blase about it.
It doesn't, soontobe. Somebody has their tinfoil hat on a little too tightly today.
The President, before Friday, already HAD all of the powers listed in this EO by virtue of the Constitution, the Defense Production Act (passed after WWII), 3 USC 301, and by virtue of the fact that the President is the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces.
What this Executive Order does is spread that authority around. We should LIKE Obama for this. He's taking a massive amount of power given to one person (the President) and distributing it amongst a larger group of people - much harder for that power to be abused now.

I'm guessing you're not a student of history. Remember anything about WWII? Little think called rationing and food tickets? Really hard to get a lot of the basics... including rubber tires? Not new. He's spreading out the power among agency heads - power sharing IS new.
I agree. Having the ability to distribute means of life is actually a GOOD thing. It can prevent rioting, hoarding, do the most good for the most number of people.
And things are NOT accelerating between Israel and Iran. Iran is in an election cycle. They say a lot of shiit. Not really a huge deal.

Lincoln suspended habeas corpus, not the entire constitution. And it ended after Lincoln died because the Habeas Corpus suspension Act specifically said it applied as long as the civil war was ongoing.
Not that I think it was a great idea, but it wasn't as dramatic as you're making it sound.

or another Hurricane? Isn't this what the Emergency Planning people have been asking for since Katrina?
My inital thought went to Emergency Planning for natural disasters, as well. Doesn't anyone remember the FEMA debacle? We were attacked on our own shores...by mother nature....
