DC Girls: Restaurants on the Mall?

Can anyone familiar with the DC area recommend any restaurants on the mall, preferably close to the cherry blossoms?

I am literally flying in to DC for the day on Wednesday for a half an hour meeting in Arlington.  The meeting will be over by noon (the building looks like it's behind Arlington Nat'l Cemetery, close to a metro), and we don't have to leave downtown DC until 5.  I'll be with my department head, and we want to see the cherry blossoms, but that also means lunch is on the university.

Any suggestions?  I'm not looking to break the bank, but we can also go classier than a chain restaurant.

Re: DC Girls: Restaurants on the Mall?

  • I don't know of any restaurants around the mall where you could sit and see the cherry blossoms while eating, but I'm no D.C. expert.  However, having just been to D.C., I'd recommend going to Jaleo near the Crystal City metro stop (NOM NOM NOM) and then taking the metro to just hang out and people-watch at the mall afterwards.  That was one of the best meals of my life, no doubt.

Or I'd go to Poste, which is about a 15 minute walk north of the mall, and do the same thing.

I'm not sure that it has a view of the mall, but the cafe at the American Indian museum is supposed to be pretty good if you're committed to eating right in that area.

  • There really are not many restaurants near the cherry blossoms or on the mall. I would visit the cherry blossoms and then hop on the Smithsonian metro and head towards Gallery Place/Chinatown. There are a lot of great restaurants in that area like Jaleo, Zaytinya, Poste, Rosa Mexicano, Graffiato.

The foggy bottom neighborhood has a few places that might work.

FYI, the Jaleo in the Chinatown area is closed for renovations, which is why we went to Crystal City.  Graffiato was delicious, and they have a $20 fixed price lunch menu downstairs, I believe.

  • unfortunately there is nothing on the mall.  there is a good italian spot in the basement of the national art gallery but no windows.

metro center stop on blue/orange line:

j&g steakhouse (a little pricey but a great lunch) close-ish to the mall.

    cafe du parc

    rosslyn on blue/orange line:

china garden in rosslyn (mins from the metro) has great dim sum

    farragut west on blue/orange:

founding farmers at 19th and Penn (near the mall) for a great lunch and awesome cocktails.

have fun!  hopefully you get great weather.

  • Agree that there aren't really restaurants on the mall. If you don't mind a quick cab rode the places mentioned at Gallery Place/Penn Quarter are good. I like Rasika for lunch if you do Indian. It's a fancy place but cheaper for lunch. I always eat there when I have jury duty!

Enjoy the chery blossoms. I took a long bike ride down there yesterday morning before the crowds. They are really spectacular right now and hopefully will hang on for a few more days.

  • mx, I have a bone to pick with Estadio. We had been walking FOREVER in the heat on Thursday, and we tried to eat lunch there but they were closed. I was PISSED. I was hot, tired, sore, and hungry. The website said nothing about being closed! /hijack

  • Oh no! That sucks.  Honestly I think their service is pretty snotty, so maybe you were lucky. I will put up with it for the good food, but I can't stand their hostesses.

  • It's been a while and I'm having trouble picturing exactly where it is, but isn't the Charlie Palmer place on the mall?  I went there once and the views were beautiful, but it was at night and not Cherry Blossom season, so I don't know if this is the best recommendation.  The food was not memorable, but it was restaurant week, so I have no idea what it would be like at another time.  It still wouldn't be my first choice for a good lunch while in DC, but if views are more important than food, it could be a good bet.

Charlie Palmer is awesome, but it's by Union Station I think.

Can't find me on the nest anymore.

    Find me here instead!
  • make sure you divert up from the basin a bit and check out the FDR memorial.  it may just be my favorite in dc- i love it.  since it is off the mall, i feel like a lot of people don't go, but it is well worth it.

  • These are all awesome, thanks! I was thinking by the cherry blossoms just to keep it simple, but since we've got 5 hours to kill, if there's nothing right by the blossoms, it's obviously not a big deal.

I'm thinking we'll do the meeting, go somewhere for lunch, and then go kill time walking along the mall to see the blossoms.  I've never seen the cherry blossoms before, so I'm excited.  This is only my 2nd time going to DC - the first being for 3 whole hours at night in December.

Honestly, I still can't believe I'm doing this trip.  It's cracking me up.

Good to know! I was wondering why you went to Crystal City.
