"The War on Women Begins With Girls"

http://ideas.time.com/2012/03/19/why-fathers-must-speak-out-against-sexis/

I thought this was a nice read given some of the current politics. I especially loved the answer to "Your daughter is so pretty." My mom loves to talk about how cute and pretty my daughter is and I'm trying to get her to use more empowering descriptions too.

Re: "The War on Women Begins With Girls"

  • Actually, I'd suggest the War on Women begins with BOYS.

Because we've already been DOING this with little girls for decades. Clearly it's not working.  Why?

Because men still control the majority of the political spectrum.

If we spent half as much effort teaching our sons to treat women with dignity and respect, as people with a brain, as their equals in intellect and ability, and I think we'd see a lot more progress.

holyshityes.  As scared as all this crap makes me for my daughter, it scares me for my son as well. I want him to grow knowing that women are just a smart and capable as men and that are people deserving of the same rights and dignity.

  • Aw, shucks, guys. Embarrassed

This is something I've thought long and hard about for a while, even before I was pregnant with B (though he certainly drove it home for me).  I could write pages on it.

It just makes me glad I have a son to teach.  And that I have a great H who can model the behavior as well.  Smile
