a new (to me at least) condom fact
You know how there's perfect use and typical use rates? And the typical use sounds scary b/c, well, most people are typical. I mean, how do I know that I'm using them perfectly? Doesn't that mean lab conditions?
What I didn't know and just found out is that "typical" includes not using condoms. The failure rate includes failure to actually use the method. In fact, that's apparently the most common type of "failure."
I'm so whipping out that factoid the next time there's some dumbass "condoms don't really work" post.
Oh, and of course I'll provide a source.

Re: a new (to me at least) condom fact
I think I knew this, and I think I'm OK with this.
Because, if your stated BC method is one that requires you to use it "in the heat of the moment" there are going to be times when people say eff-it... and then they get pregnant.
I know more than one baby that was made that way.
...I'm OK with it because this wouldn't be an issue with BC methods that don't have a requirement that they be utilized right then, KWIM?
I am the 99%.
I'm ok with it to a degree, for the reasons you mentioned. I just wish that "perfect" use was better defined.
As someone who is currently relying on condoms, I was slightly terrified about that 18% typical use. This puts my mind at ease quite a bit.
And that's why I'm here to say thank you. We're not really "eff it" people (current sig inhabitant notwithstanding, or rather, now that we know how little "eff it" is required and how much work it entails, we have more motivation) so this makes me much happier with condoms.
