NPCER - FB can't really be this creepy, right?

Hanging out on FB this morning, and I noticed a post from person X in my feed. The problem? I'm not friends with person X; I've only REQUESTED person X.

Does that mean that all of those people who've requested me but who I've just left hanging out in my waiting friends list can see what I'm posting? I left them there because I didn't want to friend them, but I didn't want to decline because then they'll just request again. If this is how things are working now, I need to go empty that out like ASAP.

Re: NPCER - FB can't really be this creepy, right?

  • I have no idea.  But I'd check your security settings.

It may be that they have certain things set to "friends of friends".  So if you have a mutual friend, you would be able to see posts/photos/etc. that they have set to that setting.

  • Thanks, curly.

My settings are on lock-down, so I know it's not me. I just looked at HER post, and it says it's set to public. But it's not like you get to see ALL public posts on FB; you just see the posts of people you're friends with, right?

So am I just getting to see this because I've requested her (so FB thinks I "know" her), AND because she set the post to public?

I've never seen anything from her before...

Possibly?  At least, that's the explanation that makes the most sense.

I never keep anyone waiting in the "request" status... but I'm paranoid like that.

  • Are you sure she didn't accept the request?

I had this happen before, I would get a large majority of her updates even though she never accepted the friend request. I eventually deleated the request so that I would stop getting some of her updates ( well that and my cousin broke up with her crazy ___).

I'm guessing the updates that I did get were friend of a friend ( we had a mutual friend in common) or public. I only saw one or two status updates.

  • It's been the new default on FB.  When you request someone (or if they request you, it works the same), you automatically subscribe to their feed.  That means all someone has to do is request you in order to see your feed.  Also if you have timeline you need to remove the subscribe button from the top--this is another way people can have your feed without you knowing.

And what really sucks is that it's almost impossible to find the location where you can change the setting.  I accidentally stumbled across it when attempting to really lock everything down.  It was a link on another privacy setting pop up window.  I was able to remove the subscribing altogether once I googled to figure out how to find the setting.

It's actually made me consider moving away from FB.

  • I have noticed that oddity in the past (I see requested friend's updates on my wall) but I am not sure if that is still the case with the latest updated FB.

If person X (the one you requested) has her posts set to public - then you'll be able to see all that she set to that setting. Also, your settings will "stick" so you don't have to go in and specify "pubic" each time. She could just have everything to public.

FB is weird now to in that a friend can just "like" a pic and that pic will show up on your feed. You gotta watch what you "like" and comment on nowadays...

Yes, you are now subscribed to her feed. However, it's not as scary as this poster is making it out to be. Anyone (that you haven't blocked) can subscribe to your feed at any time, but they can only see what you let them see. If you have everything set to friends only then they will not see anything even though they subscribe to you. What you are seeing is the stuff that this person has set to public or friends of friends.

Can you tell me what to Google/how to find this?  I am ultra paranoid about students being able to stumble on my FB and I want to make sure I am ultra locked down at all times.

I am so not happy with FB lately.

    This.

Also, to check, if you go to your page there is a link under the "settings" icon (the little gear) that reads "View As".  If you go there, you can view your profile as "the public" or any of the friends in your list.

The only thing you see on my page are some likes and a video of my dog swimming.

    Thanks, guys.

Just went and double checked all my settings (yet again), and yep, still on lockdown. My "public" profile view shows the two pictures at the top of my timeline, and that I subscribe to two people (quasi-celebrities).

Facebook isn't all that scary once you learn how to manage your settings; it's the constant updates where those settings sometimes change on you that bothers me.

LOL.  Did not mean to make it scary.  That particular FB privacy setting is highly annoying to me, both because it's a default for less privacy and difficult to find at first.
