NO Saints fans...Payton suspended

Sean Payton suspended for entire 2012-13 season. Without pay.

Ouch.

Re: NO Saints fans...Payton suspended

  • So did Payton know about it and just did nothing?  That's pretty ick.

I love Drew Brees still though.  I hope he's able to have a good season regardless of this, but I'm not optimistic.

  • Well, crap.  This is what I feared might happen.  Next year is going to suck.
  • I like Sean Payton so I'm sad for him about this.

From what I've been reading it's unclear how involved he was, but I'm gathering the idea is that it was his team, if he didn't know then he should have known.

That's kind of what I'm picking up from the articles.

I guess my problem with this is that I'm reading that Williams did this with several other teams before he went to the Saints.  Are they going to investigate, suspend and fine those programs/people too?  Or is it okay b/c it was less recent?  It's a pretty harsh punishment for Payton.  I also read that the money was mostly provided by the players and administered by Williams.  I don't know - it's a f*cked up situation.

That's what I've gathered also...he definitely should have known.

He knew and did nothing, which is the same thing as consenting to it.

I have no doubt that the bounty situation is not unique to the Saints.  However, they were caught and have been made an example.  So suck it up, accept punishment, and hope they can recover in 2013-14.

Exactly. It seems as though various defensive players around the league have fully admitted this is pretty much par for the course. But Roger Goodell loves nothing more than a good fine/suspension, so the Saints get to be the guinea pigs on this one.

(I know they were launching an investigation into the Redskins a little while ago during Gregg Williams' years there, but I haven't heard anything more about it. I'm guessing coming down this hard on the Saints was enough to scratch that itch for awhile.)

  • Damn.  League came down on them like a hammer for this.
Can't find me on the nest anymore.

    Find me here instead!
  • Not only did he knew, they claimed the coach didn't know and that it was just the players.  Yeah, right.  I'm glad they came down on them for it because the whole idea is just sickening trying to hurt people.

I'm pretty sure that Payton admitted to the NFL investigators that he knew about it, so he knew and didn't do anything.

Not sure if they'll do anything about his older teams because at this point, a lot of the players or other personnel are no longer involved in the teams.

I feel bad for the Rams - they're out a defensive coordinator at this late date.

  • Is there an appeals process? I wonder if Goodell intentionally came down hard on the Saints to send a message to the league, and then plans to reduce on appeal like he did with Rothlisburger in 2010.
