Women should 'Watch an abortion being performed' prior to having one

Arizona Lawmaker: Women Should ?Watch An Abortion Being Performed? Prior To Having It

By Igor Volsky on Mar 21, 2012 at 8:30 am

The Arizona legislature is considering at least two separate bills that would significantly limit women?s access to abortion by banning the procedure after 20 weeks of gestation and strip funding to Planned Parenthood. But those restrictions don?t go far enough for conservative lawmaker Rep. Terri Proud (R) who told a constituent in an email that women should be required to ?watch an abortion being performed? prior to having it:

?Personally I?d like to make a law that mandates a woman watch an abortion being performed prior to having a ?surgical procedure?. If it?s not a life it shouldn?t matter, if it doesn?t harm a woman then she shouldn?t care, and don?t we want more transparency and education in the medical profession anyway? We demand it everywhere else.

Until the dead child can tell me that she/he does not feel any pain ? I have no intentions of clearing the conscience of the living ? I will be voting YES.?

Proud made headlines earlier this year when she sponsored a bill requiring the Bible to be taughtas an elective in high school, but not the Quran. ?The Quran hasn?t influenced Western culture the way the Bible has,? she said, noting students already learn about some ancient religions, including Greek and Roman gods, in their coursework. ?We?ve put so much fear around any discussion of the Bible that I think it?s really causing our kids to miss out.? The measure passed the House and is now in the Senate.

Proud is now co-sponsoring a measure that would allow employers to opt ou of covering birth control in their health insurance plans.

  • Watching an appendectomy is going to squick me for the same reasons. Hell, I birthed a baby and had no desire to watch any part of it.

Sofuckingstupid.  No more open heart surgery til you've sat through 10 hours of watching someone else's.

  • Bull.  Do we force gall bladder patients to watch a cholecystectomy beforehand?  Expectant mothers watching a c-section?  Middle-aged men watching vasectomies?  No?  Then shut the hell up.
    Go babies Caden!
  • If it's not a baby it shouldn't matter??

Dude, I don't want to watch mundane dentistry. Does this mean I shouldn't be permitted to get my teeth fixed?

  • From her Facebook page:  I always try to answer every email that I receive - friendly or hostile. I don?t apologize for emails I state are my personal opinion. I may not be cut out to be a politician, but I am cut out to be a Representative and it's sad that the left like to play ?I gotcha? games through emails while sitting in my office. Some legislators don?t even respond to emails for fear it?s just another ?gotcha? moment ? thank a Democrat for that.

Love the gotcha games people play with her own words!  Remember - thank a Democrat for that.

  • Yes lady, it does matter. Some of us get squicked out from paper cuts.
  • FFS, this is getting more ridiculous by the day. By.the.day.

There are a million reasons this is appalling, not the least of which is how do they get around, oh, I don't know, HIPAA requirements? I mean, the patient that is having the abortion performed on her has no say? Or is it expected to be a "Pay It Forward" type of deal where legislators say,  "Okay, you can have your abortion...except you have to let the lady sitting in the waiting room watch your procedure so she can have hers. And then we'll make the next patient in the waiting room watch hers...and then..."

    WTeverlivingF?

  • Can all these people just go somewhere already? Ugh. GO AWAY.

  • Excuse me, question for Ms. Proud. Ma'am, quick question for you. Did they require you to watch someone else's lobotomy before they performed yours?
  • HORRIFYING. Ugh.

"Are you suuuuure you want to do this, you poor, hormone-addled woman?"

  • I want to know why men don't have to do this?  Oh yeah, they had no role in the woman getting pregnant.  it was her own damn fault for being so slutty.  I hate life right now.
  • I think actually watching an abortion would be less icky that the knee surgeries I've seen on TV.

And seriously, who's starting a protest. Something tells me I'll be marching in Topeka before the summer is through. Sigh.

  • Well, sh!t.

I guaran-damn-tee if a man got to watch a vasectomy first, he wouldn't have one.  Hellooooo, alarmingly increased birth rates!  Those little sperm are pre-babies, yo!

  • I'd also be interested to know how watching an abortion being performed is going to magically undo all the reasons the woman doesn't want the baby in the first place.

Will it make her boyfriend less of a douchebag? Or perhaps watching the video makes the last two years of college just fly by. Maybe it will increase her income? Or maybe watching videos is some kind of medical miracle that cures in utero defects? Does it make rape less rapey? Suddenly change your perfect father into an upstanding member of society? Or does it turn you into a woman who suddenly does want kids?

    Just wondering outloud here.

  • OK, I DO watch medical procedures before I undergo them and I think everyone should have that OPTION. But to require it is ridiculous. WTH is wrong with people?
  • "Until the dead child can tell me that she/he does not feel any pain ? I have no intentions of clearing the conscience of the living ? I will be voting YES"

    Stupidest. statement. EVAH.

Let's make a deal Representative Proud, ok?  When the "dead child" tells you that he/she feels pain, then we'll gladly outlaw abortion, ok?

You may have to report back to us from the afterlife or limbo though.  When we get your message, we'll act on that right away!

You know, I've been thinking about this a lot since this whole "war on women" started ramping up.  Women don't get knocked up in a vacuum.  Where is the conversations on responsible partners?  On absent fathers?  Where's the proposed legislation on sterilizing dead-beat dads, or legally requiring men who want a vasectomy to have a 3 day waiting period?  (Not saying any of that is a good idea, but ykwim).  Anyone who denies that there is a blatant attack on women being able to make their own personal choices in regards to their reproductive health going on in politics lately is insane.

  • WTF? Is he unaware that birth is far messier than a D&E anyway? And do we need to watch every medical procedure before having them performed from now on because I'll gladly avoid any and all medical care then....

  • I've watched birth, and I've watched a c/section.  They were both messy and kind of scary.  I've also watched a full hip replacement which, to my weird self, was awesome.

Compared to all that, watching an abortion would be completely boring.  It would be like watching a tooth cleaning, kind of sucky and gross, but not that big a deal.  Really, watching an abortion would be more likely to convince people it's no big deal, especially compared to giving birth.

  • I can't even watch someone put a needle in my arm when I'm donating blood.  Does this mean I should stop donating blood until I watch someone go through the whole process?

Yeah, well I think law makers should have to walk around with an extra 40 pounds strapped to their front and an electrode attached to their sciatic nerve, set their alarm clocks for 3 hours intervals and night, rub their nipples with sand paper every 4 hours for 3 weeks, have someone drain 3/4ths of the money in their savings account, and have someone kick them di-rectly in the ballzak (followed by a stitch or two to the taint) before they write abortion legislation.

I was required to watch a video of an epidural before I was allowed to receive one.

  • I love that Arizona has turned into the fundamentalist crazy state of the union.  As a voting resident- I have no idea how all these off their rocker people continue to hold office.

I promise Arizona is not all this bat sh!t crazy!

  • I know, let's also start requiring couples going through IVF watch porn first, because you know, they need to see how babies are really made.  Confused

  • So maybe politicians should have to watch soldier dying grisly deaths before agreeing to senseless wars?

Should they also have to live without health care and pensions if they vote against them?   This opens up a lot of possibilities....

Those who want to abolish the minimum wage--let them try to live on it.

that is my issue with this too!  Let's make this and watching a vaginal birth part of sex ed for boys while we're at it.  Oh but we can't b/c we can only talk about abstinence in so many states these days.  Yah, that makes complete sense now. Tongue Tied
