Any Catholics here not support Santorum?
Re: Any Catholics here not support Santorum?
Yes.
One day when it's not almost quittin time and if you don't mind, can we have an ask a Buddhist thread? I don't know a lot about Buddisim, but what I do know I find interesting.
(If anyone out there is Hindu, I'd dearly love an ask a Hindu thread too)
Don't forget:
7. The Gayz
8. Single parents
That's what I figured. And I can't help but come to the same conclusion that only a right wing extremist (in simple terms) would hate Obama so much that they'd prefer a Santorum to lead this country. Can you expand on that a little? What are Rick's lesser evils to Obama's bigger ones?
Does he? I haven't found diffinitive proof of that. About 6 years ago he said that he believes it should be used infrequently, like the Pope says. Or something.
40/112
I think 'ol Rick believes that 1st Runner Up to the R nom gets to be Pope for a month.
Someone misread their Missal...

On Friday Piers Morgan sat down with GOP candidate Rick Santorum and his family for an in-depth interview in South Carolina. Santorum expressed his view on family, marriage and his hard line take on issues such as the death penalty. "When there is certainty, that's the case that capital punishment can be used," Santorum said. "If there is not certainty, under the law, it shouldn't be used."
So, it seems "limited" means when there's not certainty, not as in for few crimes.
Ha! Sure, that would be fun. IIRC, groovingirl's DH is Buddhist as well, although fro a different branch, so maybe she could chime in too. We are friends with a family of Hindus and I've studied their religion a bit, too, so might be able to cover some of the basics of that.
Catholic here. I would rather vote for a toad than Santorum.
An actual toad.
ETA- I'm also a liberal who usually votes Dem.
That would be my MIL. She is a Mass every Sunday (no matter where on earth she is) and trips to church mid week for confession or activities. Her life is the Church. Yet she also sports a "Catholic and Democrat" bumper sticker. Always has. Santorum makes her curse - which is a feat!
I am a runner, knitter, scientist, DE-IVF veteran, and stage III colon cancer survivor.
He doesn't align with Catholics there, either (note that I didn't say Catholic ideology).
It's kind of funny to see this post today, because I was watching Santorum on tv yesterday and thinking 'I wonder what kind of name Santorum is, because he just doesn't seem Catholic. I wonder if he was a late convert or something?'
I don't think Santorum is getting much support from Catholics at all. He seems more like a Baptist, with the home schooling and all that! I know plenty of devout Catholics who send their kids to Catholic school; none who home school or share his conservative views on contraception.
Is he Opus Dei?
His family is Italian. I read an article somewhere about his not-so-distant family still living in Italy. Maybe they "Americanized" their last name when they immigrated... I always imagine it's Latin for something hilarious.
Should I even bother D? You have already decided that I am a right wing extremist based on the mere fact that I would prefer to vote for someone who doesn't have a record of trampling on the Constitution to one who looks like he already does (and I didn't even say I actually would do it..I may choose not to vote or vote third party). Forget about all the other things I may have said on this board...just that fact alone makes me a right wing extremist. Well, okay.
And another quote I found:
?I felt very troubled about cases where someone may have been convicted wrongly. DNA evidence definitely should be used when possible. I agree with the pope that in the civilized world ... the application of the death penalty should be limited. I would definitely agree with that. I would certainly suggest there probably should be some further limits on what we use it for.?
Yes you should bother. Please proceed with the examples because I'm genuinely curious.
Once you mentioned the not so distant family still living in Italy, I remembered watching a piece about his family - they were/are actually fervent communists. Santorum spoke of us democracy loving grandfather fleeing the Fascists, but he was fleeing the Fascists because he was a Communist . Actually, I think he ended up moving back if I'm not mistaken.

Yep, that's almost exactly the article I'm remembering. Maybe I heard it on NPR? Thanks for the link!
Why do you say Santorum does not have a history of trampling on the Constitution? Almost everything he says is a violation of someone's freedom. So can you be more specific on how he does not have a history of trampling rights? Is Obama's "history" of this (in your opinion) more than the birth control stuff?
I like how you phrased it, Heather. That's how I should've.
Wrt what Santorum "says": it is what he says/said vs what he does/did...two very different things to me plus what he says can be up to interpretation. Even right in this post someone accused him of being pro death penalty to the point against Catholic teaching. A quote was found and interpreted the way that would fit that POV. Then I find another quote which is clearly inline with Catholic teaching.
This happened in another anti-Santorum thread I ventured into where we were discussing his history funding birth control/accusations that he would make birth control illegal. I'm not saying everything he says is puppies and rainbows nor that I agree with him, but I do think that there are folks out there looking to make what he says even worse than what was meant, etc. But again regardless, words, not actions.
Wrt to Obama, towards the beginning of his presidency he refused to respond to questions from the press after signing .........an act in favor of freedom of the press. Then we have his signing the recent HR bill regarding allowing the arrest of protesters who don't even know that the area they are in is against the law...even the ACLU is concerned with this and is watching to see what happens with it. Then we have the birth control, sterilization, abortifacient mandate for religious organizations. Most recently we have the Executive Order mentioned in Druid's thread...an article taken from Huffington Post of all places. All actions, not just words. These may not all equate to trampling on the Constitution, but they certainly don't make me comfortable (and that's putting it lightly) with his form of leadership.
In the end, the bottom line is I do not want him in office for a second term when he doesn't have to be concerned with getting elected again. I will take all things into consideration when figuring out what to do about that when I have all the information (including who the Rep nominee is). If Santorum is the nominee, I don't think Obama will lose, so there's that too. Like I said, I would like to see Romney as the nom because I think he has the best shot.
